@D0ZZR _ I say, as long as buttons that are critical to movement, (besides initiating sprint) emulate keyboard inputs, i.e. wasd and space bar, they shouldn't interfere with the mouse... oh, and keep left and right triggers bound to right and left mouse buttons. The rest of the buttons, like start and select, face buttons and d-pad can be kept on controller inputs for convenience sake. That should prevent the weird mouse stuttering apex has when using mouse and controller at the same time I like to make my control schemes similar to halo 5's hell jumper though if that give's you an idea to how I set things up.

When people say I shouldn’t be able to use gyro because it puts them at a disadvantage when they use duals sticks, I tell them they shouldn’t be able to use dual sticks because it puts me at a disadvantage when I use my single stick N64 controller. Progress is going to happen, and people will adapt just like they did when dual stick took over single stick aiming. People though dual stick was horrible because it was new, the infamous review of Alien Resurrection from 2000 by Steven Garrett is a perfect example of how this thought process will not age well.

god that's exactly how I describe it. On a mouse you're moving on the X & Y location axis for movement. On a controller you're using the Z & X rotational axis for movement. Tho the footage in the video seems to be using a different method, more like a pivot from the body than pivoting from the wrists. I'd argue the latter is better, but both options should exist and it largely comes down to preference at that point anyway. edit: should've watched the whole video he does both arm/wrist methods

I've never used gyro, in fact I've been a KB/mouse player all my life. HOWEVER. I used something similar to gyro in VR. There are VR mods for GTA V and RDR2 now in which you perform all your actions with a joystick / keyboard, but aim with your head. Yes, sounds weird, but it actually works. With a little bit of practice I was able to achieve precision closer to my mouse aiming. I assume gyro has a similar feel to it. Anyway, can't wait for Steam Deck where gyro + trackpad is going to be the main means of playing shooters. It's a game changer, guys

Now, I am and have been a PC gamer for as long as I can remember, so I lack the practice with sticks to make a proper comparison, but I think the fact that I can aim properly with it at all where I can't aim when aim assist is helping me should speak volumes about how much better it is.

This channel convinced me to try gyro control seriously. It's been months or an year probably, and I got a chance to squeeze out about 30 hours of actual playtime to try it on a couple of games I really wanted to play which I couldn't because I couldn't use a mouse for gaming any more. After spending about that much of hours to try to find my sensitivity and all the setups done, sadly I want to say I am not so sure about this. Surely it was interesting, but whenever I actually need the precise and fast aim I expected gyro to be capable of, it still felt like a shackle that I felt using sticks before. In one game I tried flick stick, and the other game I kept the default mapping then made R2 soft pull as a hold-to-enable gyro switch so I can also use right stick along with it to look around. While aiming felt limited, it also took too much effort to just find a way to squeeze a gyro toggle into a mapping, and to make it well configured to get used to it well. I still couldn't find and set a good way after all that time, and people in general never want to spend any time configuring controls for a game, so it's going to be a huge hurdle for a gamer to try out. The only good thing I got out of this was getting introduced to DS4Windows' feature that converts gyro into an analog x-axis for steering. That one worked wonder, and gives you even more precision than a single axis of a stick can because it converts both axes of gyro output into one axis. But that's not the common case where it can help you aim like you would with a mouse. And it still has its issues which you gotta fix it by yourself and submit the code to the developers or just give up and take as it is, as no one uses it. Their development priority for this feature has no reason to be any high. And either cases where gyro was great or not... my arms still got pain. Controllers are too heavy to hold in the air for an hour or longer. I wanted to get precise aiming and less arm pain with gyro control, but I couldn't get either. I am glad I got to try this method, but I wish it was actually helpful to me.
@tekgeekster
@tekgeekster Год назад
it's neat that you tried it though. You don't have to hold your arms up for it to work btw. You can have the controller kinda resting on your lap, or floating between your thighs. You could also try binding the right joystick to mouse and increasing the sensitivity with that. Been playing that way lately and it allows me the flexibility of speed in combination with the gyros precision.

I always really liked your Halo video on why gyro isn't a gimmick so this was a pleasant surprise to stumble on. I was wondering if you've considered making more videos on gyro aim to help get the word out. If you do I'd like to see more gameplay examples of games using gyro such as 3rd person shooters and just different kind of games. Like stealth games, Metal Gear Solid 5 was a popular one when Valve released their controller. You were able to keep the button prompts and analog stick movement which is simply amazing for a stealth game cause analog movement helps a ton over a keyboard. You were able to keep precise movement and have mouse aim so you got the best of both input types. Recently I played Tomb Raider 2013 on steam with gyro and it worked amazingly with the button layout and amazing aim. The only downside was the fact the mouse input changes the button prompts so it can be a tad bit confusing at first. There's also a weird issue with mouse and the right stick not liking each other when not in ADS. The solution was to map the gyro to activate when u aim, the right stick works with it when in ads too but won't work for some reason while just walking around. Not a huge problem though because you can't hipfire so having the gyro only work when aiming makes sense. Anyways just more showcases of what gyro can do in different kinds of games from normal fps (maybe even arena shooters like Quake or modern Doom because they need precise aim) and comparisons to 3rd person shooters or stealth games such as Tomb Raider and MGS5. I know I suggested a fair bit but 1 final suggestion is if you do a video about gyro aim on 1 specific game, I reccomened doing a handcam and showing how it looks on different sensitivities. 1 for low, 1 for medium, and 1 for high. It's just to show how much movement is needed and the difference. Some games are better with low sensitivity while others are far better with medium to even high and I never see anyone show the difference in movement needed. I think it'd be great to show people the amount of movement would be needed based of their settings. It will also show people that there doesn't have to be an insane amount of movement in general (if they think it's like waggle from the wii) and if they want to have to tilt the controller less, they can with medium to high sensitivity. I'm used to medium to high with gyro and I have pretty solid and stable aim. I barely have to move the controller to aim at times an. Just showing the compassion would give people a good idea of what it'd be like on a certain game Anyways good video, I'm hoping for more people to get on board with gyro.

Ask a stick player to turn around in a game like splatoon or fortnite and then have an actual fight and laugh as you run rings around them. @tekgeekster

The game sorta requires it. Not entirely, but the way the right stick lacks vertical aiming entirely when gyro is enabled kinda creates that illusion that you need a higher sensitivity to stay competitive... which you do anyway, because everyone who plays Splatoon competitively has learned the ins and outs of motion aiming and realized that a higher sensitivity is obviously faster to aim with so you shoot your targets faster than they can hopefully shoot you.

From hours upon hours from Splatoon, Gyro is something that should paid attention to and given a chance more often. Fortnite added Gyro only to switch as far as I know, though it was not pretty. Gyro is the best option when it comes to intergrading mouse and controller. Tech yesterday has been working on a controller that combines a controller and mouse. As cool as it is, it is very big and doesn’t use the standard controller layout to make room for the mouse pad. It is a cool project, though your points with gyro being inexpensive is really good cause a lot of the “pro controllers” break easy and aren’t built well. None the less, this is a interesting and entertaining watch.👍

Thank you. I'm aware that controllers tend to break easily and I spend a lot of time fixing them for people. It's frustrating. Gyro can mitigate that since you're using sticks less strenuously, but it can still be a problem. It's definitely made my controllers last longer so far. No stick drift yet. And I'm aware of tech yesterday. I like that he's doing it, but I feel he's missing the bigger picture you pointed out in that it's very unorthodox for people to use. I'm also not a fan of his complete disregard for other companies efforts of reinventing the wheel like valves steam controller, coming off a bit narcissistic.

Three years later and it’s still not as popular as it should be which is a shame. I recently purchased a new controller to use for PC gaming because it offered the ability to add gyro aiming to all pc games and I use it in Helldivers 2 to great effect (though Helldivers supports gyro but it’s supposed to work in games that don’t support it as well since the controller is doing the processing). Gyro is only slightly less accurate and fast as mouse aiming when you practice, it just requires new muscle memory which takes time. To me though it is well worth the investment if you can do it. As I get older I find my hand can hurt a bit after gaming on keyboard for extended periods of time (wasd movement while trying to hit alt can really wear on you after a while lol). This site reviews games on ps5 specifically on how good controller support is, but I hear games like Paladins is supported, fortnite and doom on switch support it pretty well I hear. I play on pc exclusively so support isn't an issue. As for improving it, if you have a pc, I recommend getting aim lab to train your aim with gyro. Also a simple tip, try to aim ahead of where your target will be. As for setting up sensitivity, experiment until you find what feels natural for your arms to move with, and practice with that sensitivity on all games. Measure how far your reticle goes when turning your controller 90 degrees so you know what to set for each game you play. Usually easier than setting stick sense for each game.

One good way to adapt your aim depending on your situation or even game is when you need to aim around you if an enemy is very close range make sure to keep your controller a bit further away from your crotch area to the point where your elbows are almost on your legs but not quite. Aim lab gridshot is a very good way to 'feel' better with gyro and get more comfortable with it. Also mainly helps in your speed on longer range flicks and your nerves in fast paced situations. Spidershot is probably the best way to work on your precision and is how I start my warmups. Something like spheretrack/spheretrack90 followed by reactivetrack is a great way to improve on your tracking aim for most pvp games with fast strafing; this is how my warmups end with usually. Make sure you are relaxed! This one is such a hurdle to get over, aiming with a mouse usually gets better if you slightly tense but I find that the tense level you need to play to your max ability with gyro is soo low. Of course, don't overdo it and aim slowly, just be slightly prepared (best way I could describe it). Last one may seem slightly farfetched but make sure you are comfortable with other in game mechanics; if you are struggling to remember the right keybinds or panicking due to bad decision making, then your aim will suffer. Stuff like practising movement (if the game has advanced movement mechanics like apex legends) and other mechanics so that they won't hinder your aim is highly underrated.

And honestly, flick stick might even look like an advantage over mouse control. Not something I would complain about as long as gyro aiming is available on PC too. It'll just be a matter of choice. I'm get a little controversial here, but proper gyro, like splatoon, is better than either option. Hear me out: the gyro allows for precision aiming just like the mouse, something we all know sticks can't do. But WASD movement is flawed and the mouse and keyboard just isn't comfortable for alot of people and there are different shaped options for controllers. The analog sticks might be flawed for aiming but for movement inputs in full 3d games, it's just better. Don't believe me? Play splatoon online with a mouse and keyboard. Gyro aiming and mouse aiming are sort of the same thing. So much so that people on pc usually bind the gyro to the mouse for the most accurate movement, but what you're asking sounds like the steam controller's track pad. Something I've played with extensively and feel can rival mouse aiming if you don't factor in flick stick for more traditional controllers.

Great vid. Apex is my main, and there doesn't seem to be much of a gyro community there which is a shame considering that the switch and mobile versions have it, but potentially the implementation is bad. Straight mouse input nothing fancy, no aim compensation or anything works amazingly. And the more it's implemented badly the more people seem to write it off as gimmicky. At 9:10 you comment that you had issues with mixed input using steam input in apex, "jittery and decelerates with small/slow movement". I haven't had these issues at all and I use default controller input for all inputs + mouse gyro ADS. So I would say that it is an issue that can be ironed out in your settings. I recall when I first set up my steam config for Apex I had an issue where precision movement felt... Like the pixels were 3x3mm, just awful. And the resolve was to turn ingame mouse sense to minimum and bump stem config mousegyro sense all the way up. Hope you give apex annother crack and sort it out. It's a great game.

KBM>Gyro>Stick. The issue with gyro and its adoption is the implementation to software and games. Using DS4 Windows, Steam Input, ReWASD, or the game itself, all handles Gyro differently. Even 20 years of joystick software, developers can't even get it consistent from game to game, even mouse support is ass because some ported games convert joystick to mouse (Just Cause 4). Emulation of KBM to controller is the most consistent if you use 1 software on PC and Steam Input by far has the best controller to KBM emulation and Gyro support. The issue with that is games like Warzone or Valorant which don't accept Steam Input and you have to use ReWASD. The issue with ReWASD is that it doesn't have the ability to change In-Menu cursor operations like Steam Input (Detecting and setting different profiles for when the cursor shows/hide on menu). The issue with menu detection now is games like Doom 2016/Eternal uses software emulation of cursor not the windows so that Menu detection doesn't work and the games feels clunky. Sometimes your profiles doesn't transfer to games well. That leaves you with an issue of customizing the controls, some times it takes a long time and technical skills to program for a game to make it for KBM emulation. For example, Apex, you have to change 3 profiles, looting/setting menu, ingame, and viewing the map. That was hard to program if you're not coding/logic literate. Sure, if you get everything working it's satisfying but man... sometimes you're just too lazy and don't got the time to jump loop holes and learn multiple softwares. The adoption for this shit is ass, maybe give it like 10 more years and gyro would be implemented well. If you stick to KBM, your controls and sensitivity 9/10 will stay consistent across games and softwares. Sorry for the long rant lol...
@tekgeekster
@tekgeekster 2 года назад
Yeah, it definitely is that way now. That's why native implementation would make everything better, and some games on pc do that (which is magic as far as I know). And yeah it's a pain to set up, but at least figuring out gyro sensitivity is easy as long as you use degrees per second to measure it. I have mine set to 3 ) meaning if I turn my controller 360⁰, I'll be turning 1,080⁰ in game) across all my games and aiming always feels the same across the board.

I really want gyro aiming for controller like most of shooter in mobile game has gyro.

The only issue I have about this is the moving of the controller like that, I feel like when I'm playing keyboard and mouse I like having that more grounded stability, same with a controller. If there's a way to use it in tandem at like a slight level with a joystick or sc trackpad It could be very helpful overall and be extremely beneficial to all controller players. I mean if I could use the general trackpad/joystick and then the gyro for added precision A game that does it right is rogue company, where you can disable aim assist and use gyro and it has a ton of options. Either way I do appreciate seeing people try and Innovate and better gaming inputs, good video

There is. I tried explaining you can use it in tandem with joystick. There are a lot of ways to set up gyro, but I find free form movement to be very beneficial, especially in games like apex where you're actively aiming at everything. If gyro isn't for you, don't feel bad about it. You're probably already good with mouse.

Not too big on flick stick personally. I feel like I get more out of the steam controller's trackpad. It's not as fast, but I still get to aim vertically when gyro might be awkward as my only vertical aiming in some games.
@tekgeekster
@tekgeekster 3 года назад
I'm just introducing it as an option. I mentioned how normal aim paired with gyro is still faster than stick by itself before I went into flick stick, but the steam controller is still a great option! I loved mine, but it's response time was low so I swapped for a newer controller. I miss the steam controllers trackpad.

tekgeekster yeah, I totally get that. Even though flick stick is not for me, any amount of interest in non traditional controllers/controller schemes I always appreciate. I think controllers in the mainstream have stagnated and I'd love for them to progress more.

The steam controller doesn't need flick stick as the right trackpad can do the same thing with a left or right swipe but regular controllers need it cos thumbsticks can't emulate the same precision without it

once my steam controller passes away...sadly i have to leave it behind. at least the ps5 controller will be there but...losing the touchpad will suck. at least gyro is there baby

It'll take a bit to adjust to. Half of the footage in my first video was steam controller. I wish sony made back buttons for the dualsense like they did for the ps4 controller

Ive been using the dualsense nonstop for the past few months and the gyro is much better than the steam controllers. So much so that it makes me prefer the dualsense. The steam controller's touchpads will always be better than thumbsticks though
