Gyroplane/gyrocopter landing technique & errors 

I nearly came a cropper when the runway in use was changed by my instructor who was in another aircraft, owing to wind direction change during a 'touch and go' session not long after I had gone solo. The new runway was 28 and, as it was late afternoon, the setting sun was low over the end of the runway. As a result, I could not judge my height well and not having flared, my nosewheel hit the runway first with some rudder on. The aircraft swerved violently to the left and began to rollover to the right. Fortunately, I had made this mistake this training and knew, by the instructor's swift intervention then, to apply power and opposite bank. I recovered the aircraft (just!) and came to a stop safely. I was so shocked, that I backtracked along the runway to taxi back to the hangar forgetting to put the stick forward and would probably have chopped the empenage tail off had my instructor not spotted it and called 'Stick forward' over the radio. I think that the importance of protecting the nosewheel during landing cannot be overstressed and should be included in 'common landing errors'. A few aeromodellers, waiting beside the runway for the airfield to close operations, had a 'ringside seat' as my aircraft careered towards them at speed and under full power !! I went back to apologise afterwords and received lots of advice on technique [amongst other things :-) ]. You never stop learning.
