In this video, I take you on a walking tour of Gyumri, the second-largest city in Armenia and a cultural and historical treasure. I start from Saya Nova Street, named after the famous Armenian poet and musician, and walk along the beautiful buildings and monuments that showcase the city’s rich architectural heritage. I then reach Independence Square, the main square of Gyumri, where you can see the impressive City Hall, the Cathedral of the Holy Mother of God, and the statue of Vardan Mamikonyan, a national hero who fought against the Persians in the 5th century. From there, I continue to Garegin Nzhdeh Street, which honors another Armenian hero who fought for the independence of Armenia in the 20th century. I pass by some of the most important cultural institutions of Gyumri, such as the Dramatic Theatre, the Museum of National Architecture and Urban Life, and the House-Museum of Avetik Isahakyan, a prominent Armenian writer. I also show you some of the local shops and cafes where you can enjoy the authentic flavors and hospitality of Gyumri. Finally, I arrive at Charles Aznavour Square, dedicated to the legendary Armenian-French singer and songwriter. This square is near to the Iron Fountain, a remarkable sculpture that survived the devastating earthquake that hit Gyumri in 1988. The Iron Fountain used to be the centerpiece of the Polytechnic University of Gyumri campus that surrounded it and, when the 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit, everything in the area was destroyed except for the fountain. The fountain stands as a symbol of resilience and hope for the people of Gyumri, who have been rebuilding their city ever since.
