It doesn't surpass Katchen. But it's a solid second and she's a fine pianist. Very serious musician who quite obviously loves Brahms and immerses in this sonata. I wouldn't change much. A few tempo, holds and Forte nuances.
I agree, Paul. When I listen to her recordings the physical playing disappears, leaving only the spirit of not just the music, but also that of the composer. Come to think of it, maybe these are one and the same?

She adores Brahms. She has no ego, which is as it should be with art. Compare that to a female pianist egomaniac from Georgia who misinterprets everything she plays and is immersed totally in herself. Khatia I believe she's called 😉

Interprétation de haute volée comme toujours dans Brahms avec qui Grimaud a des affinités particulières. 15:30 indépendance des mains, sonorités horowitziennes avec basses saillantes et décalées, des aigus qui claquent. La fin est une tuerie rappelant la puissance d’un Katchen 33:30 29:03 sa façon franche et impérieuse de chanter au fond du clavier! J’adore! Sa tenue... à l’image du reste, classe beauté et élégance. Cela change des nymphettes dénudées.
Tout a fait d'accord, ces nymphettes dénudées créent une distance supplémentaire pour les jeunes générations (avec entre autre parfois leurs avoues publique d amour pour des Marylin Manson, pour n'en citer qu'un). Merci à Hélène de faire partie des dernières courroies de transmission de l'héritage musicale qui est la nôtre.
This is far from Brahms at his best. At best the piece shows great potential for the composer but he is obviously struggling to find his voice. It is nothing like the confident swagger he has in later works.

Hélène Grimaud's recital 2001 at the Berlin Philharmonic is a miraculous concert. The performances of all the pieces are excellent, but I especially think that Brahms' Piano Sonata No. 3 was completely revived by this performance. Brahms' innovative composition was given a whole new life by Hélène Grimaud's beautiful, profound, exquisite and daring performance. I am happy to have heard this.

It's a sound performance, but I do not find as profound as you seem to. Over pedalled and less subtle than I would like, but I agree it is a difficult piece of early Brahms to pull off.

Extraordinaria Helene en la mejor de las sonatas de Johannes, admiro la tranquilidad con la que toca y la austeridad del gesto (hoy tan raro de encontrar en pianistas sobreactuados que hacen muecas muy raras mientras tocan). Y, en estos tiempos tan negros que corren siendo politicamente incorrecto, admiro la belleza un tanto androgina de esta mujer, con un corte de cara perfecto, unas facciones serenas y bellas que redondean la experiencia y el disfrute de esta sonata. That is how Brahms' piano works should be played! I am learning the first movement of this at the moment, and I intent to try and play it something like that in my exam.
J’ai mis du temps à apprécier, à comprendre la musique pour piano seul de Brahms, plus difficile d’accès que ces concertos pour piano, et plus difficile d’accès, selon moi, que celle de Chopin, Beethoven ou même Liszt. Pourtant, cette vidéo m’a fasciné dès le départ, et m’a donné « les clefs » vers l’univers de Brahms et de « son piano » ! Hélène Grimaud est sans contexte une grande interprète et une merveilleuse ambassadrice de ce compositeur ! Depuis, j’écoute cette sonate sans arrêt ! Merci Madame !! 😌

Biographie Enfance et formation Hélène Grimaud est née à Aix-en-Provence. Du côté maternel, elle serait, d'après ses déclarations, issue de Juifs berbères établis en Corse et, du côté paternel, serait descendante de Juifs algériens1,2. Hélène Grimaud découvre la musique et le piano à l'âge de sept ans, avec les heures d'initiation à la musique de Marie-Françoise Tarrit. At her best, Grimaud is channeling some power from above or beyond. She certainly was here. Astoumding performance, ripping the notes off the page to the emotions umderneath. This sonata has never been on my radar. What a revelation!
2021: A Recent Brahms Piano Concerto no.3 was composed from the Brahms Violin concerto but Arranged as a new Transcription now 150 + years later .. 1889-2021 posthumously. Brahms was quite a Don Juan and this Sonata was inspired by a date in the Black Forrest but became an unrequited love affair. Brahms traveled to forget this. While in Palermo Sicily, (an Italian Island) he became more prolific and composed greater works. As s child he performed and traveled w/his musician father! ...

Achei a interpretação dela pouco energetica. Prefiro a de Kissin. Essa obra é da fase inicial, quando Brahms estava ainda lidando com a heranca de Beethoven e seu contraste dinamico, mesmo com um liguajar proprio. Portanto, a pecaxtem de ser tocada com mais "violência".
Brahms piano works are sublime. Difficult but beautiful..a particular beauty that enters in our hearts and does no longer leaves. Played with immense passion.. Brahms is surely passion. Thank you.
A long time ago, Grimaud was playing this song great and recording it on a CD. I heard that too. But her performance at this concert draws universal value from Brahms' songs with her amazingly sincere attitude towards the song, great technique and poetic flair. How many times have I heard? Each time, you can enter the majestic world.
Hélène Grimaud gelingt es das herrchschende wie das emfindsame Element des Komponisten, das Männliche wie das Weibliche, in schönen musikalischen "Ein-KLANG" zu bringen. Zumindest in dieser wunderschönen Aufnahme der großen f-moll Sonate "über-spielt" sie sogar einen Julius Katchen der vergangenen 60er-Jahre.
I have to admit I really dislike Grimauds overall sound concept. Her phrasing is clunky and uninspiring most times. Her balance is also not very ingenious or intuitive. The music flows nowhere most times and meanders through pageants of prattle leaving one thinking, "how did we arrive here" at any given time. There is little sense of inevitability or emotional arrival. Rather, there seem to be hills and valleys with no verdent colors in between-just a lot of unnecessary banging. It also is very self-conscious playing which, in the end never seems to allow the listener in, emotionally. I just done get the hype over this pianist. Even her agogics in the Finale were lackluster and puny. Oh well. Glad some enjoyed this performance.
