Turkey's national jet training and light attack aircraft, Hürjet, reached transonic speed in its 79th test flight and danced in the sky at the speed of sound.
During this flight, HÜRJET rose to an altitude of 30 thousand feet, approximately 9 thousand 144 meters. The speed of the aircraft reached 0.9 mach, approximately 1102 kilometers per hour.
We evaluated the importance of Hürjet reaching transonic speed for the Tekno Defense channel.
The fact that an aircraft is flying at transonic speed means that it is flying at speeds very close to the speed of sound. Transonic speeds correspond to speeds between approximately 0.8 and 1.2 mach. In this speed range, airflows in some parts of the aircraft exceed the speed of sound, while airflows in other parts still remain at subsonic speeds. This creates various aerodynamic and structural difficulties.
When flying at transonic speeds, wave drag increases dramatically due to shock waves on the airflow. This means the plane needs to consume more fuel and its engines must produce more power.
Due to shock waves and changing airflow, forces on the aircraft's control surfaces can change. This can complicate the stability and controllability of the aircraft.
Transonic speeds create great stresses on the aircraft's structural components. This can increase material fatigue and lead to structural damage in the long term.
Developed by TAI, Hürjet demonstrated that it could face all these challenges with its successful flight at transonic speed.
