Former Big Island Kamaaina here. I was living in Hilo during this transition in Hawai'i's history. Had friends living in Pepeekio, Akaka Falls area and other spots along the Hamakua Coast.
I have been to all the major Hawaiian islands many times but I feel best on the Big Island…the feeling of open air is strongest there for me due to the large size of the island but with the fewest people. The Road to Hana gets all the acclaim, but my favorite drive on the islands is the round trip from Kona all along the coast to Hilo and then back through the center via Saddle Rd by Mauna Kea…and the most peaceful part of that drive is from Waipio to Hilo along Hamakua…
