Brady, I've worked in designing manufacturing products and processes. As a result of that, I have the quazi-superpower of I know how everything I see is made. It's like I imagine you feel when you look at film critically. The whole world of stuff seems, from my perspective at least, to be derivative. We have this whole thing of the art of taking the novel to a commodity (mass production). Cameras and mics were shoved through that process, as were computers, servers, everything you guys ever touch with your workflow, and I see that and think "man, the *real* creators made this possible for you, otherwise you'd be a street performer." Now, I love you guys' work, and I don't think of that very negatively like I did in one point of my life. Throughout history people have been creating things, but we are fortunate to live in a time when you guys (let's call it cultural creatives) are joining the ranks of physical creatives. Designers in product design tend usually to feel like people like me are killing their child, when from my point of view - I give it form and process. There's something equally remarkable about a beautiful handcrafted chair, and a well-manufactured chair to me (there are also hideously manufactured items just like hideous handcrafted items - neither are perfect). So, just like people take the dreams of an architect and crush it into a pile of bricks and iron that's useful to them as a builder or a home-buyer (which is admittedly sometimes horrible and sometimes amazing), so too people take you guys' work as the strong creative work that it is, and turn it into a pile of bricks for them to use for something useful to them - the sometimes not as great reaction/response videos or whatever. I'd rather we call out the bad ones and why it's bad rather than the process itself.

Took me a month and a half to listen to all the podcasts from start to finish, now I'm in agony. Need a new fix!

I just realized something, and it isn't even mentioned in this episode's section about freebooting... The only reason freebooters have millions of views on Facebook is because most people don't bother to turn off the autoplay option. Not only are pages taking other people's content and reuploading it with dumb captions that get shared by people who don't understand or care that these pages are a problem, but many of these pages are also making money off views from Facebook users who only really just scroll past the videos on their feed.

Grey, your description of an externality is absolutely wrong. an externality is the cost or benefit that affects a party who did not choose to incur that cost or benefit. The cost of dogs being put down is clearly voluntary on part of both the owners and the vets. If dog racing simply released the dogs into the wild to fend for themselves, THAT would be an externality.

"Fair use" for criticism should only allow quoting and showing individual still images of the things being criticized. If someone's entire video is a clip show of your content, and all they did was record a audio track, you should get to keep all the money. If their video had a bit more effort, the MOST they should be allowed to -stea- keep is 50%, because if your content didn't exist then they would have made 0$.
