I'm def a lot more leftist than probably your average fan (also trans, queer, etc) but I do enjoy listening to other view points, and honestly your ability to joke about things in a respectful way is nice. Jake's hit piece was very disingenuous cuz he should know these things as a fan; 1: Ethan does have anxiety about everything (which they do joke about over the years at his expense). 2: Chat GPT is a running gag where Ethan blindly trusts the chat bot and blows off whatever his crew says. 3: They do 4 shows a week; the ongoing health schtick was a fine (if not repetitive) content that even the fans who have serious medical issues were getting in on the fun. But they like the show, get the joke, and are willing to take it in good faith. It was never malicious. Chronic illness sucks, especially if you've had it since youth. But most people with chronic illness hate someone like Jake being the self-appointed gatekeeper.

I will say that with the lack of readily available healthcare both here in the US and many other countries, people are going to feel compelled to find answers any way they can. If there’s something wrong with your body and you don’t know why, it’s terrifying. You want desperately to know what it is and how it’s going to affect you. Hence why you see so many people either self-diagnosing or coming to foregone conclusions about their health these days. Don’t get me wrong, if you’re able to see a doctor, definitely see one and get their opinion instead of relying on the internet. But it’s a symptom of the current state of our healthcare system. I’ll give an example: in the UK, it was easier to get Taylor Swift Eras Tour tickets than it was to make an appointment with an NHS dentist. Not good.

As someone who has also had a moment of health anxiety I understand the panic one gets when trying to look for answers or when the answers seem to connect to what you think you might have. Jake took it way too far and it was very uncalled for to make a video saying Ethan was doing it for attention and donos.

I legit don't get why Jake was mocking Ethan over stressing out about not knowing what was going on with his health and trying to find a diagnosis. That's what his "hit piece" felt like, he was mocking a guy going through something (either real or perceived). Especially since Jake is supposed to be all about chronic health and helping people with chronic health. Ethan may not have lupis or anything or he might, but since his mom has an auto immune thing and Ethan has Tourette's plus medical anxiety of course he's going to be stressed about the potential of having an uncurable illness. Someone who champions chronic conditions would know that anxiety and mental health encompasses the diagnosis process and what that looks like. Which is exactly what Ethan is going through.

Here's how Jake Doolittle could have made his video work. All he needed to say was that anxiety dumping and trauma dumping is wrong and that Ethan needs to keep concerns like that private because everyone has a burden of some kind that's really serious and is a constant concern, and they don't need someone else's burden to think about. Boom. No objection! And best of all, it's like a five-minute video at most. No waffling, no beating the horse by repeating yourself. Short and to the point.

I got a chronic condition (eosinophilic esophagitis, to be specific), so I can understand why Jake would be upset. Health anxiety is a very real thing. I have it, too, both before and it worsening as a direct result of learning about my illness. It is also very difficult to get to a specialist in my part of the US, so I can understand looking up symptoms (though I don't recommend it). I only got to a GI doctor (and by extension my diagnosis) because a barium swallow scan revealed my entire esophagus was severely constricted, to about half, or a little under half of the regular size. I was bumped up in my GI doc's schedule because I was seen as severe. Otherwise, it would've taken me months to see him for the first time, and it still took me months to get an endoscopy. I feel like, if Jake was actually as empathetic to others with chronic illness as he says he is, he'd understand that everyone has a different journey to diagnoses. His might've been without searching symptoms and other things, but that doesn't make it bad. It's a different journey depending on the individual's struggles and place in life. Also, I love jokes about my condition, and know others who love to joke about their own. My name on my friend's phone is "baby esophagus" because I love to laugh about the fact that my esophagus was too small for even a pediatric scope to fit during my first endoscopy. So, I find it rather confusing how the Jake could not understand that them joking isn't bad. I don't remember them joking in a way that actually seems ableist, which would've been a different thing entirely if it were true. Just a few jokes about the situation. His fans would've been in on it, understood it was a joke, and that's what a streamer/content creator does. Cater to their audience.

It amazes me that some people of the internet will present certain things at fact when it’s clearly an opinion with my basis in fact. Jake saying that the few lab results that Ethan shared meant that there was nothing wrong is absolutely ridiculous. First of all, Ethan may not be saying all of this results and secondly, if you are not a doctor that is active in that patients treatment you don’t know anything. Certain markers can mean different things based on sex, medications they are taking, symptoms among a vast range of other things that can cause certain results to mean certain things for different patients. Additionally, how do many people cope with negative emotions? Humor. When are we going to stop policing how some deal with negative emotions? Jake goes around saying he cares so much about mental health and chronic illness but how he has treated this is horrid. He is not a medical professional. What he has delt with through his own medical issues does not make him a professional in that field.
