HA-HA-HA Handwheel Fun On The Singer 500 Series Part 1

The Singer 500 Series, the fantastic Rocketeers. We are going to take the handwheel apart on Singer 500 J and see what we find.
The parts will be cleaned, washed and dried before oiling and testing.
CLEANING: First oil, oil and more oil. If oil cannot clean the 'gunk' then an as many applications of degreaser as required.
WASHING: Wash the degreaser away with dishwashing liquid and water. Then a clean water rinse.
THIS IS IMPORTANT!!! After washing the parts and rinsing them; immediately blow dry them with a hair dryer. FLASH RUST IS FAST! Flash rust can render a machine inoperable!
OILING: The last step is a proper oiling and lubrication.

All of Jebb Adams Channel machines are electrically powered. Singer Models 400/500 have an electric motor to drive the Horizontal Arm Shaft.

I have many of these machines and when I acquire a new one with a stuck handwheel I soak with oil first then I use a rubber mallet and gently tap it till it gets loose. I protect the machine with a cloth first. Works everytime.

Funny you should mention that! I will be doing another hand wheel video for the 500/400 models. I should sew; but I don’t; yet. It is on a list, let me see if I can find that list! You don’t want to see me sew! Thanks for being here craftlady!

The handwheel on my Singer 500A will not separate when trying to separate it to wind a bobbin. Any ideas how to separate the two halves? This is a first for me, as I’ve been using this machine for over 50 years!

Greetings Dan Sheffield! So the question is how to take the handwheel off is that the goal Dan? Or do you only want to wind the bobbin? The handwheel has a gold colored inner wheel and a cream color outer wheel on the machine. To wind the bobbin: Hold the gold inner wheel while turning the outer wheel towards yourself. That should disengage the needle bar from the horizontal arm shaft so that only the bobbin winder spins while the needle bar rests. That's that! To remove the handwheel: On the outer wheel there is a small screw on the wheel face. Remove the screw. Now hold the gold inner wheel with your hand, with your other hand turn the outer cream wheel towards you. You will turn it for what seems a long time but do not stop it will come off. That's that! While holding the gold wheel, the outer wheel will turn and turn and turn, but won't disengage the needle bar. It looks like my father in law got creative making a new screw for the fly wheel at some point, so I don't know if that's what's doing it....

Never seen a 500 J? was that machine made in Japan?

Hey Mrssea Sea! All the "J" machines were built in St. John's, Quebec, south of Montreal. All the "K" machines that were shipped from Scotland to Canada had the motors, wiring & cabinets installed in St.John's, Quebec also; before delivery in Canada and The States.
