Agreed. It feels like she's the type that overthink things a lot, like not playing a popular game among her peers because she thinks she's too late to ride the trend.
Maybe she could collab with Calli during one of Call's English tutorial streams. Form a small study group with some of the other JP members who are also trying to learn. That could help bolster her confidence.
It's admittedly a bit concerning she would feel this way after her interview with Ironmouse, which went pretty damn smoothly for an ESL. She must've really taken the minimal flaws to heart. At the same time, it makes me think she's currently doing her best to practice the language offstream until she feels comfortable enough with her English to do it onstream again.
I think certain role in that plays the fact that now there's a EN branch of Hololive. And some ID members are proficient in english too. All those factors could be making her feel like she isn't good enough especialy if you remember how "back in her days" she has had best english among all Hololive members.
yesterday haahama meeted kaela in rust stream (i was watching the pov of kaela) but hear haachama speacking to kaela in a high level of english i was impressed of her i hope she have confident in herself because is one of that have high skill in english being jp
Yea she is a lot better than she lets herself believe. You can tell she doesnt have a lot of confidence so she needs trust herself more cause her understanding of english seems to be really good
@@rapianyo spelling and grammar was the bane of my existence when writing essays. Lots of run on sentences. Spelling isn’t terrible when using Microsoft word because of autocorrect, but it it didn’t catch all of the spelling mistakes if it was a lab report with lots of weird chemical names.
I cant critisise Haachama for not wanting to do an english stream. Its hard for me to get the motivation to study 日本語. But Haachama, if you don't use it you'll lose it!
Leaning a new language is actually really weird. We learn language just out of necessity, then all in a sudden I gotta read a book to learn a new one?? Yeah not happening. I know some Japanese due to anime but there is simply no social pressure to make me learn kanji, so I won't. Haachama had that necessary pressure when she was in Australia, but I guess most Japanese just aren't that interested in English culture.
Yeah, I totally get where she's coming from. The reason I study the languages I'm studying for my major so hard is because I need to be as exact as I possibly can for the sake of the people I will be speaking to, but until I am fluent I am very hesitant to actually use it outside of an academic setting.
I totally get that, but in the same vein you may possibly miss out on one of the greatest resources to become more fluent. Which is to speak to natives and if you make a mistake it's fine they can correct you. There's always two parts to fluency which are reading/writing and speaking. Ignoring one half of it may hamper your overall experience.
@@imLumineux Yeah, my professor makes me do it, which is good because it forces me out of my comfort zone. I'll need to do it anyway once I'm in the field, so I've been forcing myself to get used to it and setting up regular meetings with them to work on it.
"her english is the best among all jp" That doesn't really mean much in a group where no one can speak the language. She can't even hold a basic conversation in English.
@@aloech.4573 Not exactly true, given how some of the girls know some English and use it frequently. Gen 6 especially, mainly Lui and Chloe, are very proficient in English. Hell, they are still learning English to try to speak to their overseas fans more often.
Haachama saying "... something is not right with me" is like Marine say "I'm lewd" or Korone saying " I'm adorably cute _and_ scary" or Subaru saying " Quack! " ... We already know these things and it's part of the reason we like them.
It's weird to me that she feels that way since I started watching Hololive a few years ago because of Haato's English Minecraft streams and she wasn't scared about it back then. But I guess nowadays she is surround by Hololive members who can speak fluent English.
you hit it right on the head. Haachama has time and time again confessed to sometimes outright hating English entirely because of how little she knows compared to so many other talents. She's no longer THE EN-speaker of Hololive. She tried coming up with her own "Haachama English" where she tricked herself into believing grammar wasn't important and that trash English was her own quirky twist on the language... that fell flat really quick
The bad thing about this, is that languages take practice to get good. Having more conversations in the language you want to get better at is the the best way to learn.
@@aloech.4573 of course, the information and the knowledge about how to speak a new language just magically pops into your brain, how do you suppose millions of people learn languages then?
@@aloech.4573 so the solution is to do nothing and then have an epiphany and miraculously be fluent overnight? It is true that practice doesn't always yield results, some people are simply incapable of things (and that's fine), BUT you are never going to achieve results by not trying and it is going to just get worse the longer you go without especially for things like languages where you can easily forget things after not using it for months at a time.
what she needs to do is watch lots of English shows and speak with english speakers her english is good enough to understand english shows, so shell absorb lots of phrases and sentences
I know this feeling, it took a long time for me to get confidence to write for other people in english, I'm still learning so I was afraid of writing something wrong, but I got a bit more motivated when I saw people from other countries learning and trying to speak my native language
I think her issue is that she tries hard to mimic american accent and it can be hard to sound natural unless she speaks it often. I kinda wished she wasnt pressured to speak english with the accent and just drop it entirely.
Haachama no need to worry. Ppl can understand Pekora-english. Stream in english once a while is good for obersea Haaton and for her english. Look at Shuba. She getting really good now.
Yeah her english has definitely slipped sadly, one of those things you really gotta work at keeping. I hope she gets the confidence and motivation to get back into it.
I still remember when I got into Hololive, something like 4 and a half years ago, and Akai Haato was the best English speaker they had. Weird now to hear her say that she thinks she's one of the worst.
The very first stream I've ever watched in Hololive was Haato's english Minecraft stream back in 2019 and I didn't know she was a JP streamer until months later when I actually got into Hololive. I think now that she doesn't speak english as much anymore, it became a use it or lose it situation for her. 😔
Damn she just like me fr fr, I've been learning german for like 5 years but I'm shit at speaking because I never say anything unless I've run the sentence through my head to make sure there are no mistakes, when it would totally be easier and quicker to just correct myself after saying something wrong
I wonder if it's because a lot of people just think it's "cute" and "funny" when she says things incorrectly when she's seriously trying her best. Anyway the best way to learn is immersion so maybe some more collab with EN who can only speak English (so no falling back to Japanese as a crutch) will help.
I'd recommend her listening to English videos and parrot everything they say. Your brains starts learning those patterns. There will be moments while speaking when she's gonna realize "this doesn't sound right," simply because it doesn't fit with the phrases she has repeated over and over. That helped me, along with talking to people. Reading and writing (when talking to people) helps a lot, since you get to see the pattern as you read it, and it also helps you restructure the things you say as you write and think about it. In general, using the language is what helps most. Parroting phrases also helps with pronunciation.
I do understand Haachama's feelings. but i also think practising it would make her more good in english. As Korone said "have confidence". We will wait until Haachama get more comfortable with it
Practice makes perfect. Getting outside of your comfort zone can be scary sometimes, but you will usually come out on the other side stronger for it. I know Haachama will overcome this. She is (in my mind) the strongest in Hololive.
Nah... practice never makes perfect. But it does make you improve, either a bit at a time or by a large gap compared to how you first started. If Haachama wants to get better and has the passion and drive for it, she has to interact with Kiara, Ina, Calliope, IRyS and Hakos more. At least once a week off stream, sometimes on stream.
If you don't use it, you lose it. I have studied 5 years of Spanish, but I barely remember it since no one around me spoke it. I feel like I just need to study a Spanish dictionary, and I would probably be fine.
why even retain a language you don't use? I used to be pretty good at French but since there was zero reason for my knowing it, it just slipped. A shame, but I'd rather focus on other, more useful shit
I think she should do more English streams because if she doesn't use English she won't get better at it. Her last statement still holds true though lol
Language skills need practice. Its why many felt her english isnt on the same level as it was before and some are considering lui to be better right now.
We don't really expect them to speak fluent English tbh. Just being able to understand basic questions and hold a simple conversation is good enough for a jp vtuber. She also need to start taking some private tutoring for her English if she really wants to improve .
As someone who's been bashing his head into Japanese for over two decades now, I confidently say that the only way to get better is to do it. You're going to make mistakes, and that's just part and parcel of the deal. Just keep at it.
Seems like sort of a catch-22 in that she doesn't want to do English streams cause she's embarrassed at her level of English (which is more than fine imo), but doing English streams would honestly help her improve a lot.
irony is if she does not practice it, she can't get better and English streams are a great way to practice, it helps your brain think of the words faster! plus you learn some on the way.
I hope she knows we think it’s adorable when non English speakers try their hardest for us to understand, we appreciate it regardless and in her case we can already decently understand her English
EN Is my second language but I am indistinguishable from a native speaker. Haachama Is doing It way wrong. We meme on Marineglish but its unironically the correct way to learn.
Maybe she needs to get out of her comfort zone and do more collabs with EN/ID members, probably ppl like Ina, Calli, Kiara, Bae, Zeta, Iofi, Risu, Anya, Reine or Ollie who are also JP speakers
Haachama has been at it since before Haato even existed, and having a sister that also learned English and is better than her must be demoralizing. Her English has barely improved for someone that has been exposed to it for so long. I don't blame her for feeling so insecure about her English and thinking there's something wrong with her, but under the same breath, her giving up English would be disappointing after everything that has happened
Haachama, the only way to fluently speak a language... is to keep on using it. I think it'll be great if she can collab with other JP members who have a decent grasp of English... say, Lui maybe?
Yeah when she sang red heart and infinity at the 1.4m stream the pronunciation of words is... not that great, like others said you will lose it if you don't use it.
I do have to ask. As the only holo-member who studied abroad, what the hell has she been doing all the time in Australia? She should have the most experience easily.
She should still absolutely do English streams though. There's no better way to practice a language than to speak it as much as possible. I mean look at Kobo. Her English has SIGNIFICANTLY improved since she joined and it's cause she often does collabs where she speaks a lot of English.
I think the issue here is Kobo is also mainly from collabs. Kobo is SIGNIFICANTLY more extrovertive than Haachama who rarely does collabs similar to Pekora and such. Yes, talking consistently with other members in english like Calli (or even Lui tbh) would greatly speed up learning, but the reality is Haachama simply doesn't do well in those scenarios and nothing is going to change that. It was I believe last year where she collabed with a couple of the EN girls for Overcooked or something and she felt incredibly out of place.
It was cute to listen but she always seemed to have trouble with it, it's natural her english skills have deteriorated now that she doesn't have to speak it anymore.
@@aloech.4573 ah yes, let me just write down only and never speak, and when asked to speak you can't pronounce shit because your tongue is not used to a different language
@@verqu3450 they've been trolling through this entire comment section. don't waste the time on it.... not sure why they feel the need to besmirch a former hololiver's name while doing it though...
I know she was probably busy but she had her best chance at greatly speeding up and improving her English skills while she lived in Australia. Kind of a missed opportunity.
