Does this machine use a central ball screw below the table? That's what it looks like at 0:50. If so, why would they use that over a rack and pinion on each side of the machine(or other, yes I know that r&p isn't the best). Could a condition exist where high tool pressure located off the central axis of the machine cause the gantry to no longer be perpendicular to the frame (or other axis)? Tool pressure located off the central axis would appear to create a long lever arm(moment) that acts on the relatively closely spaces guides on each side. I ask as in the woodworking industry this has effected similarly designed machines commonly used for nesting parts from sheet material.

The ball screw just moves the gantry back and forth, the ways of the machine keep it square and there are ways on both sides. See 1:39

Yes but most large gantry machines are dual driven on both sides for increased rigidity especially metal cutting ones. That's what John way was getting at.

Yes that's correct. How can you beat having encoders on both sides. We had one of similar design (central ball screw) in a woodworking shop and they had to indicate the damn thing every time they used it. Thanks for info about r&p, I always thought it was 'weaker' than a ball screw.

This machine most likely has a static screw and rotating ball nut system like shopsabre.
