Hi beautiful People,
In this video i share with you some Dutch habits I have picked up after spending a few years in the Netherlands. I am really curious to know if these habits are typical Dutch or did I just learn them myself.

I remember the story from a Dutch lady originally from Suriname, going on holiday to Suriname, taking the buss, and getting angry at the buss stop, the buss was 5 minutes late....lol At that moment she realised she had become really really Dutch.

Hahaha. I can see myself reacting like this lady. I really can’t stand lateness and appreciate punctuality so much😆

I like learning about The Netherlands even though I live in Peru and I have no plans to go there in the nearly future, but it seems like a country where people are generally happy and I believe some of these habits would contribute to be happy even in our very diffferent culture. Speaking our minds, trying to save money, punctuality, being less stressed about being the center of atenttion otherwise you are a loser, men and women doing the same activities without gender predjuice... Some of the great Dutch habits that I appreciate.

Punctuality in the Netherlands is still not what it is in Germany. We always have the excuse "de brug stond open", at least in Holland (the west of the Netherlands). Always comes in handy, bridge or not.
@josphineogugua
@josphineogugua Год назад
I’ve heard of the German punctuality. I never knew this excuse was common..however I’ve read in a Dutch book where someone used it as a reason to be late😆

Hey Josphine, Nice to hear we could inspire you to adapt some habits 🙂 About being fashionable.. I do think this is person dependant what you will call fashionable..? Is it about wearing make-up and female sexy dresses or is it about wearing big brands? Or do you define things differently? If you listen to American expats (ask Fie..) Dutchies are usually described to dress smart (as gym and sports clothes are common in the USA) where Russian women just wear high heels daily and consider big lips and big silicone boobies the highest achievable fashion goal. (I travelled a lot to Russia for business in the past..) So maybe it is not about Dutchies being less fashionable but just having different opinions on what they consider fashionable !?

I don't know if doing things yourself is Dutch. I saw plenty of DIY shops in other European countries. Maybe it's a European habit. Because taxes are high and wages are high, it is too expensive to call a handyman for small problems.
@josphineogugua
@josphineogugua Год назад
Thank you Bas. I think you’re right. Handymen are really expensive here and also not easily available. Sometimes you need appointments and have to wait a while.

Hahaha directness. Well honestly I can be very blunt, but it always helps me getting to the point and setting my boundaries. But when I I am around people from other countries, I try to be well be more subtle. Cycling is just a good thing. Since I have a care I became very lazy.
@josphineogugua
@josphineogugua Год назад
I think I’ll adopt your strategy with directness😆. To be more subtle to people from different cultures. Cycling is indeed fun👌🏾🤗
@daviddickens197

I really don't find them to be direct at all. Maybe because I am Jamaican 🇯🇲.
@josphineogugua
@josphineogugua Год назад
I can understand this. I also didn’t find them as direct especially when the directness came from people in authority or someone older (typical Nigerian). I only found it weird when the directness was the other way round.. example from younger to older cos that’s not something I was used to.

Dutchies don't want to waste time or money. They want to be efficient. They want be independent and focus what is really important in life.

I don't know about other dutch man, but when I look at a woman I don't mind them looking good, but in the end I need to know that I can take her walking, hiking and cycling. If she looks like she couldn't or wouldn't, I don't bother.

I think being self reliant without a handyman is not typically Dutch. I have seen that all over Europe. As for the rest, yes, you are slowly being cheesified.

When the Dutch do behave, humbleness in fashion is the fashion originally. Telling lies was a big NoNo, so honesty is the cause of the directness. In the last 50 years we are drifting away from our Christian roots, so we get less direct, more into fake, bling, and fashion, and lies. Sadly :(
@josphineogugua
@josphineogugua Год назад
Thanks for sharing your opinion. For someone from a culture that isn’t as direct, I still see the Dutch as being direct. But it’s good to hear what it used to be like.
