Unfortunately, it seems that security administration is much more about being able to deflect responsibility when a breach does occur, rather than actually trying to find the most secure solution. Open source is not used because there is no one to blame when a breach occurs, as opposed to when a "standard" security solution (e.g. Microsoft) means that one gets to blame Microsoft, who is too entrenched to be held responsible.

Of course if the conference software is open source, using open protocols, Big Brother can't prevent a participant from recording the conference, and capturing proof of what someone else said improper. Which would matter in a crooked court.

That company may have unjust power over some courts, but Google has unjust power over most people. Those people pay much more than just taxes. This case is nothing compared to that. Switching everyone to Linux won't completely remove Google's power. It would wipe out Microsoft, and that's a good start for an avalanche. I hope I live to see that.

During lock down when courts in India started to use zoom for first time there were lot of instances of photo bombing of court sessions. Also somebody even managed to broadcast p*orn, due to which zoom was banned, but was overruled by higher court.

Here's the only concern... Legacy stuff. I worked for PepsiCo from 2012 - 2016. I was an excel macro monkey. Mission critical business decisions were made using excel files with pages of macros / VBA, with some comments dating back to the 1990s. Excel files that would use VBA to connect to Microsoft SQL, Oracle, and even a few proprietary systems. I highly doubt that can open in Open Office, Google Sheets, or anything else. Also, my password had to be exactly 8 characters long, because they had unified login between all their systems, from Windows / AD, to the AS400 system I accessed via terminal software (that controlled inventory management). Anyway. I have no idea how the federal government works. But if it's anything like my experience in industry, things aren't updated until absolutely necessary. Not only is there the technical side of re factoring everything, but Princie (who never graduated high school and is 55) has ran the demand report the same way for the past 25 years. Good luck introducing a new user interface. And you can't just fire her because she's inefficient - that's age discrimination.

Open source software aren't hacked simply because they're unpopular. If Jitsi Meet suddenly gets 50% market share it will be hacked without doubt. But I also agree that government adopting Linux will save them lots of bandwidth and hardware cost, and they won't have to use Windows XP anymore💀

To be ultra clear, this is proprietary software for that reason, far easier to hack something that is public to view. It 'should' be audited by the government agencies semi-regularly as well, we just don't see it publicly for obvious reasons.

I would describe myself as a FOSS enthusiast, to the point where despite being a full-time proprietary software developer, I probably contribute more code to FOSS than to my company. But guess which one of them pays my bills and which one doesn't 🤷 Yeah as long as we're still capitalists, proprietary software is staying around. You might think it's evil, but at minimum you have to admit it's a necessary evil.

I'm all for entities using public money moving to open source so that there'd be a possibility of getting something back. However, I think it can be a bit misleading to say that this will save money. In a long run it more than likely will, but a lot of people look at short term savings (and unfortunately this is getting pushed on to municipality, state and government budgets as well the more business owners are getting voted in and involved in politics) and in short term this might consume more money because you have to train people. There will be people who will be fine, but that's far from everyone especially when a lot of people are for whatever reason allergic to changes. Start menu button looks a tiny bit different? Time to go to panic mode. Also a lot of places want and sometimes even need support path where they get support this very moment or five minutes ago which unfortunately does not exist for a lot of open source projects.

honestly, I'm not surprised. proprietary software is just proprietary in nature.

One day soon, we'll realize using closed-source software in government is unfriendly to democracy (at best). Closed software is unfit in a court of law! Why? Software is critical infrastructure. We need to re-think democracy, where it's really about participating in keeping the government functioning and acting responsibly. Contributing to existing open source software contributes to democracy, but the effect would multiply many times if governments invited participation in building future open source enterprise systems. Today, they're locked-in, badly.

regarding the governments funding proprietary software thing, i think the absolute minimum thing that should be required is that at least any time the government hires a consultancy to develop software, that software must be open sourced. there might be some exceptions needed for national security reasons, but i think it’s an overused excuse and most classified information should actually be public for the good of the people

Dude, I have a ryzen 9 5900x. Windows Defender using 9% cpu and keeping it boosted at 4.9 GHz. Pulling 50w at iddle. Disabled defender and now it's pulling 16 watt at idle. Running at 400 Hz .

Lateley i feel like most of the software its becoming spyware for the companies that made them but also place to worry that the software you use might have a some sort of vulnerability in them. 11:16 I would do that but the main problem its im not good at computers and i dont know how to use linux i know you need to use the terminal for a lot of stuff etc. And im worried about compatibility for software and games that i use.
