Love how you have a designated spot for each spanner not just chucked in a drawer, this way you can alway find and see what you need excellent !

Hello Destin. Years ago I had a shadow board on the wall, as my collection of spanner’s and tools grew the shadow board became too large. What you see now was my answer to condensing the amount of wall I needed. It seemed a good idea, but it took ages to make. However it does work rather well, (smug smile you can’t see). Thank you for your comment. Take Care Jim

Hello Andy Thank you for your comment. Before I started my apprenticeship I thought I could use the hacksaw, it only has a blade, a frame, and a handle, what can be difficult in that? Well as it turned out quite a lot. Don't get me wrong it is easy to cut with an hacksaw that's no problem, the difficulty arrives is when you need to cut square and accurate, cut long and straight, cut around a slight curve, cut through a thread. The hacksaw is an extremally useful tool and like most tools it takes practice and time to build the skills to use it well. Invest the time, practice using it and finding out what it can do, you wont regret it. Stay Well Andy, hope to hear from you again, Jim

Hi Jim, really good instructional video. I was introduced to the hacksaw by my dad who was a great maker of things, but it quickly became the bane of my life, the Devil's work! Just couldn't get the hang of it, and the frustration didn't help. Things have improved but I'll never love the hacksaw. When I have problems starting I reverse the blade and cut on the pull stroke, seems to help my old arthritic hands a bit. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe and keep up the good work.

Hello Pedro Thank you for your comment, I'm so glad you liked the video. The hacksaw is one of the most useful hand tools you have, but it does take practice to perfect how to use it. When I started my apprenticeship in 1971, I was one of about 30 young lads taken into the training school that year, we were split into three groups, then spent 3 months Turning, 3 months Milling and 3 months on the fitting benches. My first three months was on the fitting benches, and my first three days was spent training on the hacksaw, we cut, and cut and cut! At the time it was hard boring work but looking back on it now I see how useful it was. The old Eclipse No60B hacksaw with the straight handle you see in the video is the hacksaw I was using during my apprenticeship, it’s my first hacksaw, my Dad had bought it for me, and since then it has become an old friend that I have known longer than my wife! My next video comes out on the 24 June, it’s the first Hacksaw Techniques video, it’s called SAW STRAIGHT AND TRUE, and I hope will be of use to you. I don't normally do this, but If you would like a preview of that video, follow this link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HOHJpdSVHrQ.html If the link is not clickable, copy it then paste it into the Address bar at the top of your browser. There will be more Hacksaw Technique videos in the future. Stay well Pedro.

Years ago I just picked up a hack saw and used it to cut some metal and haven’t changed that approach. I’d tighten new blades with a pair of ceetees 😅 I didn’t know any better. I’ll be skilled from this day forward thanks to you. Thank you Jim!

Hello Jack. Thank you for your comment. How would you know there’s more to an hacksaw than meets the eye, if no one has ever told you? Part of the reason I make these videos is to help people understand their tools. I was lucky, I had a full apprenticeship in the early 1970’s. It fills my heart with contentment, when I hear people like yourself who say they have taken something away from one of my videos, thank you for taking the time to tell me. Whereabouts are you in the world Jack? Take Care Jim

Thanks for the Info on hacksaws, it was very helpful. May I ask what model motorbike is sitting on the bench in your shop?
@CYC123
@CYC123 Год назад
Hello Ron. Thank you for your comment on the hacksaw video. The bike on the workbench is a 1954 BSA B33. Its a 500cc single. I originally bought the bike from a friend who had blown the engine, the con rod had smashed through the front of the crankcase/barrel. I had a B33 engine under the workbench and using that the bike was back on the road. That was around 1970-1980, I fitted a side car chassis, a sheet of plywood, and a car seat, it was a bit of a rat bike but fun to ride. A friend, in fact the one I had bought the bike from originally wanted to have a ride on a combination, he rode it straight into a brick wall smashing the front wheel and bending the frame. With no wheels or forks the bike stayed under my work bench until 2000 when I decided it was time to get it back on the road. In 2001 after a complete rebuild of everything it was back. A bit more information than you asked for, sorry about that, I was carried away on a waft of nostalgia! Do you like the old bikes? Take Care Jim

May i know the difference between pistol grip and straight grip in handling. Is that straight good in handling. Why its there ?
@CYC123
@CYC123 2 месяца назад
Hello Isuru. Thank you for your comment. The straight grip handle is the one that looks like a wooden file handle. This type of handle was probably fitted to the original hacksaws, I know it was very popular 50 years ago when I was training. The pistol grip handle has also been used for many years now, I think its seen as more comfortable and makes the saw easier to use. Which one do you choose? I would try using both, see which one your prefer. As I did all my training on the straight grip I tend to use that most of all. I hope this helps. Take Care Jim
