Someone let me have a microphone while my brain fog was running the show. It turned out pretty alright, I guess.

Nice analysis! I think the difference with Hades 2 is that you don't need relatability as a hook/motivation, because the assumption is you're already invested in the cast of the first game. So Melinoe's motivation to rescue them and see her family and household for the first time is shared by the player because you wanna see your friends again. These days, whenever I see Thanatos art, I'm like "oh no my bf Thanatos is still trapped by Chronos!" and that's one *hell* of a motivation for me to Stop Time (that and seeing how many time puns Supergiant can come up with). Also, like, definitely part of my motivation to do the underworld route is seeing Hades again, even though he's understandably Big Sad.

i havent seen a lot of hades 2 early access, but i feel like it relies on mystery a lot more than its predecessor did, even though there was an element of that too in there. i feel like that is what has me hooked this time around, which is why i am also intrigued to see how that holds up when i have uncovered all that there is to uncover. even then though, i do miss the family vibes of the first game

@@merilahna I can see that. It didn’t draw me as much with it, but there is def this vibe of uncovering the tragedy that fell upon the house. I def perked up every time they mentioned tidbits of what happened. Also, as a side note, I do enjoy that the more somber vibe of the myths they chose to incorporate, the wild witchy ones, obv. It’s been fun chatting with arcane and such.

This is such a heartfelt video. I do have a lot of thoughts about Hades, and a lot of emotions and this video helps put those into words. I'm not crying, you're crying. Both of us ig

I think that there is something deeper to Hades 2's motivation, specifically for those of us coming into it from Hades 1. We spent however many hours falling in love with the characters in Hades 1, and in Hades 2 they are gone. But they aren't dead, they are taken. So the motivation I feel isn't to avenge them, making Chronos the end goal; my motivation is to get all my friends and family from game 1 back. This does create an interesting difference between us and Mel. While we share the same goal, our reasons differ slightly. We want to get back all those characters we love from game 1, meanwhile Mel never even got to know them. The game also gives us something that I don't know if we even realised we wanted: a chance to explore the surface world, and possibly even reach the heights of Olympus we pretended to want to visit in the first game. The one worry I have, and hope that Supergiant have an elegant solution to, is why we will keep going after we succeed. The endgame loop of Hades 1 was so perfect, I'm honestly stumped as to how they'll give us that same ludonarritive consistency in the second game. (Also, how dare you not immediately love Artemis' boons! Crits give big number, big number good, make monkey brain feel nice)

@@sebrussell XD the Artemis bit took me out. I like your note that, yes a big part of the appeal of the run comes from going to get our people back. I think that’s a much better way of expressing what I feel on those runs. Sleeping Hypnos was so devastating to me. I also really like what you said that that puts us in a different position than Mel because we’ve known the people she only knows of. It was an interesting angle to take, but it does make her feel a bit like an outsider at times. V nice point. Like you, I am thinking a lot about that re-run loop. It was so clean in Hades 1 that I really do wonder how that’ll work in this story. I’m having a hard time imagining us making friends with Chronos and doing a run for fun and bonding. I’m interested to see what they do.

Well, that's the 'problem' you run into with a lot of sequels that have mostly new characters. Which is not at all uncommon, and it's actually not a problem if the new characters are engaging, which the Hades 2 ones are. I adore most of them already. Also ngl I prefer Hypnos asleep 🤣 Mel may not have known the older characters but she certainly has her own emotional attachment to them (what she knows of them), just like Zag did to Persephone before they met. And for me, the journey to find his mother was what made me root for Zag, more than his feud with Hades. And I have no problem going on a similar journey with Mel, because I like her as a character (though I wish she was less of a good girl), and I also love the dynamics between her and Hecate, Nem, Odysseus, Eris and the rest. I feel for her in the same way that I did for Zag, over her missing family. I actually feel a little more invested in her journey than Zag's, not only because the stakes are higher but because I did know those characters. It doesn't create a disconnect between me and Mel, if anything it makes me feel like I want to do everything I can to help her meet them (except Hades, he can rot where he is lmao). I'm also curious as to how they'll keep the endgame loop going. TBH, I wasn't compelled by the one in Hades 1. As long as I had to keep going to meet and talk with Persephone on the surface I was motivated. After she 'came home', I kinda lost interest in continuing. Spending eternity working as a security consultant for your asshat dad isn't that interesting from a story standpoint. I actually wish they'd kept Persephone on the surface, that would have kept me playing 😂

i couldn't agree more with pretty much all of your points. hades is my favourite game of all time, and i can't imagine anything topping it anytime soon! i read a comment a while back that perfectly sums up why hades gameplay is so enjoyable: it's a roguelike that WANTS you to win. i love its story, it presents complex family dynamics and resolves them really well, which could've been all too easy to slip up i think. it presents hades as just shitty enough that you're motivated to stand up to him, but still feel motivated to mend the relationship with him. you know how hard that balance must've been to write? and yet it works perfectly! and this is coming from someone with a deadbeat dad who finds defeating hades over and over cathartic. i love hades 2, but it doesn't feel nearly the same. the runs are too long imo, and i'll try not to judge the story too much until it's done. the stakes are way higher though, and seeing hades chained up and cerberus suffering gives me urgency the first game didn't have. it took a while to accept that the sequel doesn't hold that same spark, and that it's okay if i don't adore it like i do the first game. it was still worth the $40 i spent on it and then some, and it's still in EA! that's more than hades costs right now! no matter what, it'll be great in its own way.

I think your final thoughts do a really good job of summing up why I felt a bit more disconnected from Hades 2 -- still a great game, but Zagreus' story does feel more immediately relatable. Loved the video :)

i think some of the excitement and hubub (as someone who immediately bought hades 2 upon release) it works a lot like last of us 2. the narrative quickly tells you that chronos "killed" the house of hades and the fire behind players is based off the connections the player base had with the first game's characters. it might not work for everyone, but it worked for me! this raging bisexual needed her fix of new hot gods to fawn over and melinoe did not disappoint (neither did nemesis/moros WOOO)
