Hadleigh finds himself getting involved in the life of his goddaughter Joanna. She is a student at the same Oxford university that Jennifer attended. She has become caught up in a movement to allow under-graduates of both sexes to be admitted. Jennifer is very pleased to discover that Kate, her favourite old tutor is also heavily involved in the campaign.
(Plot spoilers from here)
James discovers that Kate is really only involved as part of her wider attempt to put a stop to building of a modernistic new graduate block at the university. The news gives James and Jennifer the chance to go head to head as they disagree over Kate’s involving of Joanna.
Dame Audrey, who runs the University, plans to rush through the building of the graduate block and plans to sweet-talk her biggest public benefactor into bringing forward his donation. The benefactor just happens to be Jennifer’s father Charlie!
Joanna Twigge, who plays Joanna, would become a series regular during the fourth and final season. James is caught between a real rock and a hard place, he genuinely cares for Joanna and doesn’t want her to ruin her education. It’s also an interesting episode for Jennifer. She can see what she is missing out on somewhat living in the Yorkshire countryside. Joanna walks out on university and tells James and Jennifer that she is going to stay with some friends in Notting Hill - Jennifer remarks to James that she almost wishes she was going too. The episode closes out with a lonely shot of Jennifer standing in the hallway by herself.

I think the clues are all there that she will eventually be going to visit 'friends in Notting Hill'.😉

Ten minutes in and Jennifer has her first hissy fit. I love that someone is named Lucinda Smithers. It puts me in mind of one of those horsey gels who used to show jump at Hickstead.

Jennifer could make a whole room tense, in anticipation of another outburst. A mainstay of Grandstand was activity from Hickstead. I don't think I've seen such respectable horsey activity for at least a couple of decades, though I'm sure it must still go on.

It always seemed to be on the one-eyed monster when I was kid back in the sixties and seventies. After the Horse of the Year Show at Wembley Arena, Hickstead was the place where all the big names appeared, including the legendary Harvey Smith, who once memorably flicked a v sign at the owner of Hickstead, Douglas Bunn.

@@davidfogarty2220 Indeed, yes. I once saw Harvey Smith ride when I attended Stonleigh Country Show in the mid-70s - he kept both hands firmly on the reins that time! A visiting TV repair man dropped me off there, but I had to walk around 15 miles back to our village. My dad didn't have a car at the time.

I think it's rather heading that way. The signs are all there. Maybe she'll say something like 'I'm off to stay with friends in Notting Hill' at the end of this series and then won't return to James.

Looking forward to this. Scanning down the cast list I see Rosalie Crutchley is in it. I remember she had a somewhat lean and severe looking face, with many of her roles in dramas and films reflecting this. I do hope Sutton is back to his normal unflappable self?

“Stop behaving like a spoilt brat” James at last gives Jennifer a well-overdue dressing down! Is this the beginning of the end? I would rather see her change her ways and stay, but I can’t see that happening. The final scene is very telling - the lovely Jennifer is sadly a square peg trying to fit into a round hole, and failing.

Two spoiled brats. Each wanting to make their "counterculture " voices heard! The writers do a good job of showing how their thinking is not based on rational intelligence. Instead, self-centered and emotional. It was a turbulent time when the series was made, and being "with it" --- not being "square" --- was the all rage. University, music, fashion, and the written word were vehicles that propelled the "counterculture" revolution. It all was made trendy and fashionable --- just what appeals to most women. I enjoy the series --- well written and acted! Thank you for making it available to view. :-)

In many ways, the counterculture of then is the mainstream of now, with the post-counterculture rearing it's head amongst present-day activists in our own iteration of turbulent times, all turbocharged by social media and the erosion of rational thinking in a new direction this time around. The formulation of the counterculture - going back to roughly 100 years ago - is quite a rabbit hole to explore ;-)

@@FoogouFilms It was a very good episode. It's interesting that Jennifer wants the status and trappings of wealth but postures at being anti-establishment. I guess I'll find out more about the character with further episodes. What you mentioned about the counterculture being around a century ago - would that be things such as 'critical theory'?

@@imanihekima1659 If you're thinking of the Frankfurt School, then yes. Around the 1930s. By hook or by crook, the start of the "long march through the institutions", which has now largely been completed.
