My latest build takes you up onto Hadrian's Wall itself. Housesteads Fort is one of the Wall forts, and one of the most famous Roman forts in the world. Its dramatic setting at the top of a long ridge makes it an imposing sight, even today. I wanted to re-create what it would have looked like in the 3rd Century, based on archaeology done in 1898, the 1930s, and the 1970s-80s.
A Roman fort wasn't just a fort. It was the nucleus of a living landscape. And it's been a lot of fun putting this fort & its landscape back together. I hope you enjoy!
Please visit my "Housesteads Roman Fort" reconstruction home page, hosted by Steam, at: steamcommunity..... If you have the game Medieval Engineers ($20 on Steam), you can download my fort for free and explore it all yourself!
Thanks to Keen Software House for making this fab software, and to Steam for hosting the game & forums.

This is brilliant, I was part of the team of archaeologists who revealed the barrack block at the top of the site back in the 1970’s ... now I live within 4 miles of the wall line. Housesteads today is a wonderfully wild and open site, this film is a revelation as it shows how tight and claustrophobic the streets and allyways were, and the incredible scale of the fort in the landscape. One small point though, the weather is not continually awful up here, it tends to be drier and sunnier and calmer than many commentators think and to be posted (especially officers) to the wall line was a plum job ... there was plenty of action north and south of the wall with more opportunities to gain ‘gloritas’ than almost any other part of the empire. It’s a wonderful part of the world to live now as it must have been back then unless you were an enslaved brigante tribesman working a short brutal life in one of the lead mines in the moorland areas to the south or part of the native population on both sides of the wall continually harassed by roman troops. Hadrians wall was a formidable military barrier back than, today it’s a calm, peaceful and enervating place to visit.

Not 'enervating', but inspiring . . .

This is very clever. I've just been there today and this just helped me get a feel for how this could have looked back then. Amazing. If only I could time travel.

+Robert Lawson Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. This was a lot of fun to build, and I'm always hoping that it will be useful as well as fun. Amen re the time travel. After 200 years of studying Hadrian's Wall there's still soooo much we'll probably never know.

+gamingarchaeo Thanks much! I'm such a fan of the software; I really hope it keeps growing. Any new feature it adds will only add to the immersion. And ooh, I need to carve out a little time and watch your Banner Saga playthroughs, I've heard about that game. Welcome to the land of RU-vid!

Oh is Romans were very clever people well the Saxons were living in poverty. If you was a commander of a thought, do you live the life of luxury? Carpenters, blacksmiths, allsorts of people the commander would’ve probably had his own or definitely had his own cooks fine wines and very good food. Interesting computer images thank you

Excellent effort... The comment by Ruth Goh about the camera jerking too much, I think this is your attempt to show someone walking along, with the slight height adjustment for steps taken... probably... I have visited Housesteads/Vercovicium/Borcovicus many times, and I think you have done a great job of showing the SLOPE of the lower part of the fort. The top part of the fort ( near the Wall ) is fairly flat. Any chance of doing a similar for Chesters fort and the Bridge over the North Tyne please ?

Dwain Hicks Thanks much. I’ve always wanted to go back to this and rebuild it again using updated parts like the lower rooflines to give even a better sense of scale. Was really fun “walking” through its streets.

Been there, done that. Took the kids to Housesteads. Got a photo somewhere of me standing on the wall in full cabbage kit. I was in the RAuxAF on route to Otterburn Training/exercise area. I was driving the truck, so we stopped for a photo opportunity. It just seemed right to pay homage. Everyone thought I was crazy. Which of course I am.

Brilliant! Yeah the trek from the carpark to the fort itself made me think of the souls who had to lug building materials up to it. The views though, nothing quite like it anywhere else on the Wall. I'm dying to get back, been way too long.

This roman army center should be ANIMATED by British soldiers being instructed in the roman compared to modern technics of war and defense, by college and university pupils & teachers learning & teaching latin and classical culture, by artists able to recite the Eneide in latin with a "sons et lumière" performance illustrating the episodes recited, by banquets with artists reciting the poems of Horace... I am certain the Prince of Wales would encourage such a cultural enterprise

First class reconstruction. Did you ever visit the place or did you work from blueprints and maps. I ask because I've spent my whole long life within easy distance of the wall. I was born near Wallsend. Where can I get a copy of your video and access to the original.

Hey, thank you much. I have managed to visit it twice. Been far too long now and I can't wait to get back over to Wall Country again. The rest of the work is from archaeological reports, site plans, and talking with experts, etc. This was built in the game "Medieval Engineers." Unfortunately it's old enough now that it won't load anymore in the new versions of the game. What I really want to do is recreate Housesteads and Vindolanda together; I'm just trying to find someone in the game who can build the landscape to the right specs.

It's got similarities. But it's getting more and more realistic every week, and leaving some of its old blockiness behind. I really would like to recreate this whole fort now, with all the new tools the game has. Hopefully I'll get the time to do it.
