Same here Cheree! I didn’t get it before now! Like you, other reviews didn’t do it for me. I am rethinking my whole opinion on this game! Love #ThinkerThemer reviews!
Awwww thank you so much Sean THIS COMMENT really made us smile!!!! I'm not sure we are always this happy and smiley but it's hard not to be when we're around board games at least. Thank you for saying this and watching as always 💕
I’m so thrilled to have found your channel! I find your enthusiasm and excitement so endearing and I think you make the most amazing couple! Congrats on your recent marriage, btw (saw that on Twitter). As a gay man I love seeing other LGBTQAI+ people represented. Also, I love this game!
Whoops! Though I think this might work for you both (maybe even more Lisa!) as it is competitive but not really and definitely not directly... ! It's a nice one for a bit of quiet time with a cuppa 😊👌 thanks for watching as always and sorry for the slow replies on Facebook... we're both still quite sick! (Filmed this before thankfully)
This one has been on the margins for me up to now... it looked utterly overwhelming and a bit too much like well decorated homework, but you’ve convinced me to take another look! Really clear review as always, thank you! 🙂
Jason I felt the same way! Looked like a complicated roll and write with a super busy sheet! I never watch any of the other reviews all the way through. But #ThinkerThemer just have a way of pulling you in and explaining! I am reconsidering as well!
Well decorated homework Thank you so much for watching as always Jason and so glad this video was able to provide some clarity on the game. Thank you for all of the support
@@ThinkerThemer On Tour, Welcome to..., and Cartographer are top 3. I love Noc Mal (aka Encore). "Roll to the top" is fantastic. So those are to 5 maybe. Play a ton of Qwixx with family.
I think you both are really, really going to like it!!! Loving the new logo... really pops as an avatar! Hope you're well nice to be watching you on stream right now 💕
I think Paladins has the same feel of getting new coloured workers and figuring out what to do with the. It’s also very much multiplayer solitaire accept when your locations get taken by an opponent. Great vid girls.
Oh yes!!! That is a really interesting comparison and even more intriguing is that I didn't like the multiplayer solitaire aspect in Paladins (Amy here!) but it doesn't bother me at all here 🙃 thank you for watching and for taking the time to comment 💕
So excited to wake up to a #ThinkerThemer video! I hope you both are feeling better! I have to be honest, I partially watched several review videos of this game in the past but moved on as it looked like an overly complicated, with busy game sheets, roll and write. I have several big roll and writes that I enjoy ( like Fleet The Dice game, Welcome To, etc..) and nothing I have watched until now drew me in! I think you both have changed my opinion on this game! A multiplayer solitaire and roll/flip and write that BOTH of you love!? Your enthusiastic description and walk through of the game really kept me intrigued. Combotastic and a handful of meeples and/or resources playing a flip and write?! Sweet! Ok, I think I am in. Thanks again for another wonderful review. You continue to do amazing videos! #joeyfam 🦘💕
We have been a bit slow on the full game reviews recently so it was nice to catch up a bit during Easter! We really enjoy filming them and it is so nice to hear when maybe we have offered a different perspective that makes it clearer why you might be interested (or not!) in a game. I'd also be really keen to understand if you have any constructive feedback on the length of different sections or ways we can improve! Thank you for watching and engaging with these videos as much as you do Darlene, we appreciate your kind words and support always
Another great review. I already had this one pre-ordered as I love Garphill Games and I live in the North East of England in Newcastle where the wall ends by the River Tyne. The place where it ends is still called Wallsend and the remains of the Roman Fort, that guarded the end of the wall, are still there.
Great video! I am super excited for this game and it's currently on its way to my house! Also, we need to make "mise en jeu" Maggie's official term for measuring theme integration.
Thanks for covering this one! Preordered the day it became available in Nov and excited that it is arriving next week. Nice to hear what you both like about it and why. I’ve watched all the videos I can find, including Tarrant’s on Meeple Univ. As you mentioned - great rules explanation. (Also, congrats on your engagement!)
@@ThinkerThemer I knew right away that it would be a great fit for my tastes. I love a good roll/flip and write game and have several. However, many times they are lighter in theme and playtime, and this is a meatier, longer, thinky game. I love the addition of the various colored meeples as well, so that I’m not just checking off more boxes (there are enough already! ;) plus the multi-use cards are excellent as well. I’ve played three games so far and loving it! Only solo thus far, but my family is getting curious 😏
Wonderful review, I look forward to giving this one a play. I have been seeing it in my FLGSs and will look forward to giving it a play when able. I have some roll/flip and writes in the collection so will probably play it before deciding whether to add it or not. Thanks!!
Based just on how much you two are smiling in this review I definitely need to try this! It reminds me a bit of Paladins, as has been mentioned by others, which I love. I didn't like Roll through the Ages so I'm hoping this will could fill that void in my collection. It'll certainly look nice on the shelf next to Raiders of Scythia 😁
This game wasn’t on my radar at all, but now it is. So.....thanks? 😂 I’m guessing my ability to hold out on a preorder won’t last long. Seriously, thanks for the review-it looks really fun!
Thank you so much for watching and for taking the time to comment! Do you have a favourite roll and write? I (Amy) really like them but Maggie is harder to convince... but she loves this one!
@@ThinkerThemer Welcome to... is still my fave for sure. I'm looking forward to getting my hands on Fleet, Cartographers and Superskill Pinball soonish though. I'm yet to play a roll and write I've hated (though I'm sure they're out there) so they feel like a fairly safe bet for me :)
Hey there!! Believe it or not this is the only way we could reach out to you - to say a HUGE thank you for becoming a channel member. We are so grateful for your support. If you'd like to join the discord it's a great spot full of very welcoming and lovely gamers and I can help you get on there if you like. Either way just wanted to say thank you very much ❤
Glad to hear you both liked it! And I have to say that I really like Sam Phillips’ artwork too. Between this and Raiders of Scythia and Circadians, I just really enjoy his art style. I look forward to seeing what else he does with Garphill in the future. Thanks for another great review Amy and Maggie! 👏🏼
Haven't seen Hadrians's Wall on sale anywhere in my neck of the woods. But I kinda prefer my roll n write games to be light, dunno how they play if they are that heavy. But I'm willing to give a try if I can get my hands on it. Oh, I finally played Innovations with my friends. They all played it numerous times and simply tore me apart. That first game was brutal! After all that I watched your review of it, and you both never mentioned how cut throat Innovations could be! You two made it sound like such a friendly game! ;) Have a good weekend!
Maybe we can teach you Hadrian's Wall when the Singapore Australia bubble opens!!! 😅 wouldn't that be amazing. I think the game was only available direct for preorders but hopefully will become more accessible from FLGS soon. Thank you for watching as always ☺
In the Top 200 Solo video, Maggie, you mentioned setting up a game and never getting it started. That's this game for me. Has been on one table for a week, I just haven't sat down to start.
I know what you mean. It can be quite daunting with the 2 pages worth of symbols. Even when I’ve left it for a bit long and come back to it, I find I have to go back to the rulebook to double check and remember how a couple things work, but still.. overall, it’s such an incredibly satisfying gaming experience once you get going. Having those physical meeples to exchange, and spend back and forth and having increasingly longer turns feels so good. Definitely worth the initial energy investment. Hehe
I typically don't play a lot of roll/flip & write games (although I love Cartographers), but the use of components in this game is really intriguing. Thanks for the great review, I think I'll be checking this game out!
Thanks for watching and commenting as always Bill! Maggie is also not that into roll & writes but she definitely enjoys this one! It's a much quieter affair than Cartographers (we love that too though!)
Well, I passed on the preorders because I was not entirely convinced, seems like I have a new game to buy 😂You just described the experience we sometimes want for the end of a work day: a cup of tea and a nice game to relax with, pen and paper and some really cool meeples. In the end, looking forward to this one. Thanks for the video as always! ❤🌈
Yes!!! That is such a perfect description of the occasion for this game Sergio. Cuppa and quiet time. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment as always 🌈
Wasn't super excited about this game before but after watching this it looks a bit like Three Sisters which we really like. Excellent video as usual, really thorough look at the game and it's just enjoyable listening to you two talk about games.
Oh thank you so much for stopping by and watching this one!! We were surprised by this one... haven't played three sisters yet but look forward to it coming in! Hope you had a great weekend ❤
@@ThinkerThemer Right on! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on Three Sisters down the road. Ended up ordering Hadrian's Wall after watching this, so hoping to try it this week. Thanks again! :)
The wall I build to keep this board game out of my collection has been smashed to pieces. With what I read about it I thought it was going to be to complex, with to much going on and it, in the end, being “just” another roll & write. Now after seeing this review I have to look for a copy, because I believe I (we) would enjoy this very much! 🌬💵... And thanks again Amy & Maggie, even my credit card starts to like you 😉. It says “Hi” and it’s looking forward to next Monday’s “Back Chat”😅... 🇳🇱Pascal🦘
Can't stop playing this game. It really isn't as complicated as it looks at first. Once you understand the way the symbols and tracks work, you're going to see an unbelievable variety of options and paths. But they all make sense, and it's more intuitive and thematic than you'd expect a pair of spreadsheets to be.
Great video! I have heard of this (I have also heard of 1000 other games) but I think I will really like this one. I love Roman military history and I have visited Hadrians wall a few times - I know the theme probably isn't that strong but cool theme anyway. I like heavier games, I like lots of decisions and I have been looking for a roll & write to wet my appetite - maybe this is the one! Placing an order now. Thank you.
So glad we could provide you with a bit more info on this one Paul...! This one is a fine example of the roll and write genre... it has that same feeling as "That's pretty clever" of wanting to start again once you're done to try something different. Happy to hear the theme appeals too and so cool that you've been there!! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment
Awwwwwww, combo envy. I remember playing a bunch of different games with friends, and I would watch them take their forever turns, and then it was on me, and I had a meh one-action/no-combo snooze of a turn. I had originally passed over this one, but now I think I might need to reconsider!
Still catching up on old videos - have played this once and want to play again. Must say it wasn’t silent - I (and others) seem to talk to ourselves with the whole “so I use this yellow to cross this off, then I get a purple which lets me do this”. Suspect it helps keep track of the thought processes! It is a great game. And NZ designed 🇳🇿
Hahaha that is so true Michele, there is always a bit of talking about the combos, especially when you're new to a game. We both do that as well. This is such a wonderful game, if we had the time it would get to the table much more frequently!!! Thanks for watching this (and allllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll of the others 😂)
We are equally happy helping you work out a game that won't work for you! Thanks for watching and commenting as always. Happy Monday morning! Hope you had a great weekend ☺
I was on the fence on this for a while, and torn between this and Three Sisters. Ultimately I went with Three Sisters based on the theme, but after watching this maybe I’ll find room/time for both!
J Michael I am with you! I backed Three Sisters due to theme as well and passed on this preorder. But now am thinking about adding this! 🤔 . #ThinkerThemer get me every time!!
We haven't played three sisters of course but the experience does feel quite different between Fleet the dice game (their other roll and write) and this one. This is a much longer experience and the combo-tastic feel is much more pronounced (turns can be really, really extended with clever ordering). Hope this helps and thanks so much for watching!
Was surprised to hear Amy enjoyed a roll and write without much interaction but after the explanation, seems like one to look into as I'm unsure if roll and writes would be my jam. Backed my first roll and write on KS recently (Three Sisters) based on your Fleet Dice review. Btw I couldn't figure out how to message you on YT regarding something so I've left a message on Facebook. Hope you don't mind.
Yes this one is quite different to Fleet. There are still combos in fleet but with this one the joy is in just how elongated you can make your turn (while Maggie waits with boredom hehehe). It is a much longer game too rather than Fleet which is much more of a filler. Thanks for watching and your support as always Jason, and for getting in touch on Facebook. Talk soon!
Mindy, great question on player pads! I was wondering how many it came with it and are they double sided. Do you ever laminate any roll and write sheets? I recently started going through and laminating some of mine. But I do think I enjoy writing on the paper better. I have been known to accidentally erase some of my marks on the laminated sheets😳 🤦♀️.
Great question Mindy!! It comes with a significant amount of sheets... actually most of the box is comprised of the two pads and man that little box is HEAVY because of it oh I just found the answer it is 200 of each sheet. 200 solo games or 40 5 player games. You could definitely laminate as well once you start to get low. We filmed this before we got sick and we are getting better but still in bed recovering! Thanks for checking in and for all of your support
maybe one to try before you buy! Or wait a bit longer until the BGG ratings start to roll in. Thank you for watching Victor and taking the time to comment 💕
You two make this game sound too good to pass up! But I backed Three Sisters so that I wouldn't have to buy Fleet: TDG or this one. Hmmm... I do like multiplayer solitaire combotastic games! I'll wait til someone else in my game groups buys it. Might be a few months before we meet up. Hopefully not too much longer!
I suspect you might like this one Luke!!! It is quite different to Fleet. It is much more like Ganz Schon Clever. Hope you've been keeping well! Talk soon about some kickstarters! ❤
Eek! I think it is more substantial than a usual roll and write ... lots of resources... and the box is HEAVY. But it should be hitting retail so maybe you can get it cheaper locally?
Such a glowing review really made me want to pre-order this game. Unfortunately (and fortunately) tomorrow is GameNerdz's Nerdzday sale and my wallet will need some time to rest after that haha!
Sorry for the delayed reply Sam! There are a lot of resources in the box and tons of sheets so it is super heavy even though it is a medium sized box. For us it is worth it because of how much we will play it but maybe it will be cheaper when it hits your FLGS? I'm not sure.
Trying to get more information on when and where this game can be purchased....Shem said April for retail purchase. I believe pre-orders are already being delivered. If anyone knows when it will be released in Europe please reply.
Hi David, I just contacted Garphill games to ask for you and got the following reply: Those in Europe can order from www.garphill.com - we send all European orders from Greece (within the EU). Hope this helps and thanks for watching! 🥰
I definitely think at least an hour but it also depends on the AP of other players. We played again with a friend who was really paralysed by all the choice so that game ran longer. I guess it is as long as the slowest player :) but it is so fun so what is time? 😁
Regarding recent events around Viticulture's expansion, how do you reconcile with the acts of Hadrian? An emperor, who's responsible for one of the worst genocides of Jews in history (estimated half a million dead), when he erased an entire province from maps, enslaved what he didn't put to sword and tried to extinguish Judaism altogether. I know the Hadrian's wall is one of the Monuments of history, but so is The Great Wall where emperor Qin Shi Huang used labor as a mortar when they were worked to death. You've probably played a game with Julius Caesar, another favored by history, but who had many times over more blood on his hands than Pizarro and Cortes combined (genocide of Celts, 3 million estimated dead).
Isn't that the point of the video? That one person's pain is another person's blindspot. Maggie spoke to her experience, and we will listen to others, and try to learn. We did not say or imply we were perfect but I can tell you for every game we cover there are many many more that we don't. We're trying to evolve. Did you reach out to the publisher with this feedback?
@@ThinkerThemer I didn't contact the publishers. Because of the deeds of the mentioned individuals I have little to no incentive to play themes around them, even less to own them. Though I can understand people's fascination with their lives and history built around their other heritage. Although, Pizarro and Cortes have very little thematic connections to the Viticulture games for me and are as such out of place there.
That's fair as an approach and we also avoid games that we find upsetting based on our own unique (of course biased) experiences (for example for us but maybe not others heteronormative goals etc). You're right that there are many more examples in the hobby, and we hope that the truths you're asking us to see in your comment are fully researched and when deemed necessary for inclusion in a game are included with accuracy, and full information is included either explicitly in rulebooks or implied by mechanics, so we can educate ourselves and not blindly play as characters and in situations that we don't fully understand, or worse, cause unintended hurt to our friends around the table.
