In this video, we look at the structure of haemoglobin and its role as a respiratory pigment. We then take a closer look at oxygen dissociation curves and how they change depending on conditions such as oxygen concentration and rate of respiration.
Made for AQA AS Biology students studying Unit 2.

Rakib sdq May try and do an exam paper walkthrough for a recent one if I get chance. Sometimes with AQA it's best-guess...application questions you need to know your how science works stuff...controls/variables/reliability etc, and be able to interpret graphs. If in doubt, use key words like osmosis etc a lot! And talk about as much detail as possible with graphs!

Thanks so much for this video! I finally understand the dissociation curves. If I remembered: Left-shifted curve = haemoglobin readily Loads oxygen Right-shifted curve = haemoglobin readily Removes oxygen Would this be correct for any dissociation curve shift? I understand that oxygen is "unloaded" and not removed, it's just for remembering sake. Thanks!

When you're talking about the Bohr effect should it say it unloads more readily at lower partial pressures of oxygen rather than high i.e the muscles so you get more oxygen to respiring tissues for aerobic respiration? Just checking because I'm confused :)
@MrPollockBiology
@MrPollockBiology 9 лет назад
Nope, it unloads more readily at a higher ppO2...so it starts unloading sooner so that your respiring tissues don't run out of oxygen. Hope that helps!

Fetal haemoglobin has a higher affinity for O2 than adult haemoglobin. This enables the transfer of oxygen to the fetus during development as oxygen dissociates from haemoglobin in the mother’s blood in favor of haemoglobin in the fetus’ blood
@faysummers3913
@faysummers3913 5 лет назад
So would you say the haemoglobin has a lower affinity for oxygen when the partial pressure of CO2 is higher?

@OneShadowHeart

Great video, can you explain what would happen to the Feotal Haemoglobin. Is there an acronym or phrase you use to remember the pp in relation to affinity and loading/unloading because I find it extremely hard to remember
@MrPollockBiology
@MrPollockBiology 9 лет назад
Shift to Left = Loads readily at Low Shift to Right = Unloads readily at High Left,load,low
@ELFsuju1000

During exercise, the curve will shift to the right and the partial pressure of the tissue increased. why there is an increase in the partial pressure of oxygen in tissue ?

Thank you for the video but in summary, there is a mistake, it is loads at low partial pressure of O2 and unloads at high p.p of O2, in the summary it is the opposite
