Hafting a new 100 year old axe

I had this axe as a paperweight on my desk for years. Recently I decided to put a handle on it. It didn't go real smooth but it turned out good. I'm sorry about the sound quality at about 8 minutes, I think the cold made my cheap camera malfunction. It only lasts a couple minutes.

Hey Mindokwin- i added a piece to my handle by dove tailing it to the back of the handle with wood glue clamp it let it set overnight,shape it with a wood rasp to fit.then install axe head and wedge.it works everytime.the dove type tail on the sdded piece keeps it from ever giving.lasts as long as the handle does.takes a little time but well worth it at the end.no way it can give or come loose either.i use hickory for the add on-same as the handle.good luck nice video..

I REALLY enjoyed your video. How exciting to find a 100 year old NOS axe! Your articulation, demeanor and lack of background music made this a home run!

my axe also ended up fitting like that too, there was a gap in the front (slimmer part) of the eye, but it was on there super tight. it didnt seem to be a problem
@Mindokwin
@Mindokwin 9 лет назад
+The Collector It probably won't be a problem. I think these older axes had more variation in the eye size.

Mindokwin yeah being hand/semi-hand made it makes sense.

That is the most beautiful head I’ve seen. Maine eyes were very long and awkward. I have a handful of Maine axes like Emerson & stevens and they tend to have that gap in the back. I have also used wedging to fill that gap. Glue helps those stay in place
@Mindokwin
@Mindokwin 2 года назад
I don't see too many Maine axes here. I really like the diamond shaped eye in older Maine double bit axes.
@ryanb1314
@ryanb1314 Год назад
@@Mindokwin I have acquired 2 daimond eye Maine double bits both made by Emerson & Stevens which is who made that particular Witherell you have here as well. The date under poll and P under bit was E&S identifiers also like you mentioned John Witherell stopped producing in the late 20s but that axe is marked in the 50s E&S forged for a few different companies in their later years.
@Mindokwin
@Mindokwin Год назад
@@ryanb1314 I believe the Witherell was a separate company at first then was acquired by E&S at a later date. I was not sure when that occurred or if my axe is before or after. Thanks for the info, it is my nicest axe. Nice pickup on the diamond eye axes.

I actually obtained a really old double bit Witherell from a friend, restored it, made a handle for it, and I am hoping to give it back to him as a gift.

Say Heah, I sort of made an unusual axe, I had a thin 5" Iltis Oxhead hanged on a 19" White Hickory Handle, I had it made short for easier transpot, Some call it a House Axe, Miner's used short heft also. my Iltis head is similar in weight to yours and having a very thin face some told me I would of been better off putting a longer handle on it since it is a felling axe head. But I still put on a shorter handle on it. What I'm finding out is with its shear weight it plows through wood easy and makes short wood out of processing alot of firewood down to kindling just by Axe Tapping it. I'm not that good as you, so I had mine made and Maurice from Canada made it for me and did a great job, Thanx for sharing your axe, job well done, Thanx. ,, ,, ,,

+paulie 4x That sounds like a handy size axe there Paulie. Thanks for watching and the compliment. Cheers!
@paulie4x1
@paulie4x1 8 лет назад
Especially when everybody laughed at me, telling me I made a mistake and that it's too thin to split with. But seriously the weight just blip, blap, blam through wood making short work processing firewood down to kondling, I Axe Tap with it and I had a leather harness made to carry it, It goes over my shoulder and I don't even know it's there, Yeah, it's a good one. ,, ,, ,,

Nice Job👍. Amazing old piece of history. Looks like a great cutting Axe. Crazy that label was in as good of shape after 100 years! Does the Head have a Makers Stamp?
@Mindokwin
@Mindokwin 4 года назад
Yes it does. It is stamped Witherell in an arc pattern. Also I found an original paper label that was never put on an axe on Ebay. The seller had a lot of labels from the old Emerson & Stevens factory in Oakland Maine. So I have that with the axe but not glued on it.

@@Mindokwin Yeah...I live down here in the states. I bought it 7-8 years ago from Australia for $70 delivered! It has the original Spotted Gum handle and 90% of the green paint still intact. I've never seen another in that condition...and I'd bet it would easily sell for $500 in today's crazy axe market. Thanks for featuring your axe in a video...I love seeing how they look in OG condition. If you care to see mine I can send you some pics...though I understand not wanting to have your email public.

@@Master...deBater Thanks for the offer, I've seen a few over the years so I'd rather not reveal my email here. I think there were a few imported back in the 1980s but they were small heads. You are right about the crazy market, I bought a Wetterlings Bushman when I heard Wetterlings were going out of business for $129. now they go for hundreds just a few years later.

I was wondering what sort of oil to use to drive the wedge (or adhesives or steel crosswedges that came with the wedge kit or whatever,) and I remembered that linseed oil polymerizes as it dries, thus eventually forming an adhesive bond with the wedge. That's also why it's used as a base for oil paints. Good to know my instinct was on the right track. I'm about done shaping a haft for a 3-pounder and just looking for tips to do it right.

I gorilla glue gaps on my stuff, solid as a rock, nicely done sir.
@Mindokwin
@Mindokwin 9 лет назад
Rich Holland I prefer not to use glue on axe heads. It makes it harder to remove the handle if I have to rehaft it. Thanks for watching.
@scottjampa6374
@scottjampa6374 7 лет назад
Mindokwin Yeah the more I learn, it seems like a bad idea to use glues, at least to future proof- no point in ruining a good ax head just to get it working today. I have no idea how old the one I'm working on is, but they don't make them like that in China. I do like my Fiskars 7550 hatchet though. :b

A late reply , yes ... I would be reluctant to remove the original label , but if the label is unreadable and detracts from the beauty of the axe , I reckon it has to go . That axe head is quite a find and congrats . As far as gaps - If they aren't too pronounced , a mixture of sawdust and epoxy or my home made hide glue works pretty good . Thanks for your video Mindokwin and all the best from New Mexico -> Lefty Cat
@Mindokwin
@Mindokwin 6 лет назад
It was a difficult decision since I normally like to keep things original and historical. Luckily I found an unused original Witherell axe label on Ebay so I bought it to go with the axe.
@QuantumPyrite_88.9
@QuantumPyrite_88.9 6 лет назад
It is amazing you found a label on Ebay , which is a site I need to look at more often . Have been sharpening an old Plumb carpenters hatchet which I prefer over any other hatchet . Have had it for over 40 years and it bites just as well if not better than a Granfors . Do you ever use a carpenters hatchet ? ATB .
@Mindokwin
@Mindokwin 6 лет назад
A guy had several labels he got from an axe factory in Oakland Maine and had them in his collection for years. I do use a carpenters hatchet and also a broad hatchet. I probably use a broad hatchet more often in building because it is easier to flatten a pole. The hardened hammer end of a carpenters hatchet is handy though when using nails and chopping. I probably have about 30 or more hatchets.
