The Hagakure is fine work, my favorite of all the samurai texts that I've read. Encompasses so many life lessons that can still be useful today.

I do the same thing. Twenty years later and I'm still taking notes. ''Throughout your life advance daily, becoming more skillful than yesterday, more skillful than today. This is never-ending.'' So many principles in this book you can choose to live by as it were. And only recently, after making RU-vid clips about it, did I feel like parts of it really became my own. Best of luck to you! Hagakure (1659-1719) - Alexander Bennett (2nd Hagakure book) clearly explains the time Tsunetomo lived in, and who he was. He wasn't grouchy or pissed off. Far from it. He saw warrior customs deteriorating and the mentality of men weaken. Much like we do. The Philosophy shared in this book is ageless and it's wisdom, universal. ''The general run of people settle for their own opinions and thus never excel. (..) We learn about the sayings and deeds of the men of old in order to entrust ourselves to their wisdom and prevent selfishness. When we throw off our own bias, follow the sayings of the ancients, and confer with other people, matters should go well and without mishap.''

I really like Musashi's Principles of Strategy. 1. Do not think dishonestly 2. The way is in the training 3. Become acquainted with every art. 4. Know the ways of all professions. 5. Distinguish between gain and loss in worldly matters. 6. Develop intuitive judgement and understanding for everything. 7. Perceive those things which cannot be seen. 8. Pay attention even to trifles. 9. Do nothing which is of no use. Take care!

@@bushidoblues9302 just find a stream dude it's for sure on the internet that's how we broke guys get to even watch samurai films when we're lucky. I'm looking for Satan's sword online (for free) but I can't find it, and no unfortunately buying it in USA then import it to my country is out of my budget. Are Amazon versions not good enough quality ? I see they sell many dvs and blue rays if you actually want t buy it.

@Ash Amazon is fine but it's just usually really expensive, or you can't find it. I use ebay alot, but I like to own it physical mainly so that I can edit it for a video.

@@bushidoblues9302 I saw some copies around 30$ or below but I don't know if that is acceptable to your budet but anyway, to me as a film buff owning DVD is not that important, if I only watch things I could own I couldn't watch any films honestly. Have you watched hirokazu Kore-eda movie "shoplifters"? it has zero to do with gangnsters but to me is a masterpiece of cinema and he is the most amazing modern Japanese film maker. Highly recommend the experience, it does what te movie "parasite" intended to do but in a more elegant nuanced way.

@Ash I just added it to my list. Sounds like something I'd like Parasite was good but I felt it was missing something and the way the story played out was odd.

Great for you Mr fun. I'm pretty sure if ghost of tsushima was around when Tsunetomo was alive he'd be a big fan of it because it's a good as game.

I feel the same way, but to each his own. Videogames are for children but they do increase attention span, so they're a double-edged sword. Playing Skyrim all day obviously is bad practice, but thirty minutes of a strategy game can be beneficial.

You have failed to recognize virtue that exists in the context of the constraints in which we take lessons and apply them. We apply such knowledge in context, which means acting with discretion, as well as not allowing ourselves to be lambasted by others like yourself for having acquired such knowledge in the first place

@@myname-mz3lo I really hope that anyone beyond the age of a young teen would try to in any way draw inspiration for behavior from the samurai histories. From what I see in the western culture in which I live there are plenty people who have a view of the samurai from movies and cartoons which glamorize and romanticize them.

@@urban_phantom7750 Not sure why your sentences sound strange, but ok. I think I understand what you wrote. I don't mean to criticize your language for the sake of criticizing. Of course we can get virtues from anything. Technically that applies to any and all information in general, and specifically from the text which claim to contain virtuous values as is the case in the book in the video. I am referring to the cultural trend which romanticizes the samurai as people who were somehow inherently noble and virtuous. This is the case if you consider how they are portrayed in film, in books, and more recently in history in video games. I am glad that there is at least some media that does discuss how these samurai were really the social elites in Japan who often abused anyone whom they perceived to be below them in social status. I think that when the Japanese monarchy decided to create a regular army and to dismiss the samurai as a special class in the 19th century it was done for very good reasons. At least from what I read before, the regular lay people supported this because it was very similar to how in European countries they gradually got rid of the institution known as indentured servitude. It was very similar to a caste system and peasants were treated no better than slaves, depending on the demands that the feudal land owners put on them.
