It was originally built as a cathedral in 537 AD and served as the main temple of the Eastern Orthodox Church for almost a thousand years. In 1453, when Constantinople was conquered by the Ottoman Empire, the Hagia Sophia was converted into a mosque, which for almost 500 years was one of the most important mosques in Istanbul! In this video, we will talk about how the history of the Cathedral changed and why it regained its historical image in the form of a Mosque.
In 1935, the Turkish government decided to turn Hagia Sophia into a museum (Ataturk's reform), and Hagia Sophia served this role until 2020. On July 10, 2020, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that Hagia Sophia will be converted into a mosque again, which caused controversy and great discussions both at home and abroad. Currently, Hagia Sophia is again functioning as a mosque and is open for Muslim prayers.
I propose to take a walk around the area and Sultanahmet Square, also known as the Hippodrome Square. These are all popular tourist destinations located in the heart of Istanbul. Sultanahmet Square is surrounded by several historical and cultural landmarks, including the famous Blue Mosque, making it a must-see for anyone exploring the city.
Walking here you will be surrounded by stunning examples of Ottoman architecture and history. The square itself was once the site of a Byzantine hippodrome, where chariot races and other public events were held. Today it is a bustling center with street performers, vendors and tourists from all over the world. One of the most notable sights in the square is the Blue Mosque, also known as the Sultan Ahmet Mosque. This stunning mosque is known for its intricate tiles and six minarets that make it an instantly recognizable landmark in Turkey.
