Hi Keith. Thanks for your insights. Always appreciated. The prints looked fantastic. I especially enjoyed your photo composition on that final photo of the car.

Keith, Tyler James Newton here in Georgia. Your eye for photo papers and what you are looking for mirrors mine pretty much exactly. The Photo Rag Baryta (standard) and William Turner are my go-to, especially for black and white. Although they also perform very well with color prints. I also use some traditional printmaking methods with the prints I am making (typewriter, letterpress). So that is one reason I am considering this brighter matt baryta, thinking it may hold up to contrast and be ideal in that application. Just got my first roll in, so time will tell. Printing on a Canon pro-2100 24 inch printer.

I'm really curious to try more prints on the Photo Rag Baryta -- I can definitely see the potential of it! Interesting to hear about the other ways you are experimenting with it! Thanks for the kind comments -- great to hear from you.

I like both looks. I think it depends on what you're trying to photograph. If the car is the important item, then more shadow detail is important. But, if it's a story about the landscape of that area that just happens to have an old vehicle, then the details under the fender become less important and may actually be a distraction to the overall story of the shot. I actually kind of like the wider shot because I looked at the images as a landscape image. Even though the content here was beyond my knowledge level I loved hearing your explanation. Thanks for sharing!!

Thanks Charlie. I agree about it being a landscape photo vs a car photo!

I would like to see how this is edited so that you can retain those shadows at

The review I had been waiting for! Excellent images as always. I've printed maybe 7-8 images with this paper and confirm your observations, indeed, is a constrasty paper that holds excellent detail BUT does seem to lose shadow detail. One other thing everyone needs to know. Very important to store it properly because once you print and leave the paper out it curls. Just something to be aware of. BTW I was very impressed wit the Canson Infinity Arches 88.

I think the curl you’re talking about is exactly what caused those head strikes. I left the package open for a few hours while I was printing and it began to curl

Appreciate the review. Nice to be able to compare textures. Am I correct that Arches 88 has a smoother surface than Photo Rag Matt Bartya? Would there be a difference in susceptibility to smudges etc? I'm looking for a paper to mount unglazed. I'm puzzled by the shadow detail being blocked - wouldn't a good ICC profile stop that from happening?

Both the Arches 88 and the Photo Rag Matt Baryta are quite smooth. The ICC should give you a good quality print but maybe the nature of this paper (or ICC) is to print with more contrast. I've had others agree that it seems to print contrasty. I liked it on other samples but not so much on that old car with the dark wheel wells. A custom ICC might help -- or you can adjust the image to print better on this paper, which I prefer not to do. I'm a fan of the Arches 88. With regard to scuffs or smudges, Most matt surface papers are susceptible to those. maybe some Moab or Hahnemuhle UV spray would help.

I really like the Hahn Fine art Baryta 325 and the Baryta FB 350. They are not matte. For B&W Canson Platine Fibre rag 310 is a favorite as well. I like the look of the Arches 88...very nice

Fine art Baryta is a favorite of mine and photo rag Baryta as well. The epson legacy Baryta II is also quite nice.

Hi, Keith. More contrast and less detail in the shadow areas or less contrast and more detail in the shadow areas. I think this is the choice that needs to be made here. My preference is a bit more contrast, but when I see them next to each other, I don't think the paper with a little more detail is bad either. It also seems a little warmer to me when I look at the sky. Thank you for this technical video, friend. Antoine.

Hi Keith, I used the photo rag paper for some of my images in an exhibition late last year and I must say by the time they were framed and behind glass you couldn't tell much difference between them and the Museum etching paper other than slight tone differences.

Yes! Under glass it’s hard to tell anything except for gloss (reflections). Thanks for watching Rick

What printer are you using? Have you adjusted to the same paper type (HM vs. Canson) if you print in B&W mode without ICC profile? Give also a chance to the new Bamboo Gloss Baryta. Excellent paper for B&W!

I always do the paper sample tests using the manufacturer ICC profiles. I agree the bamboo gloss Baryta is quite nice!

Thanks, Keith. For these prints I recommend to use B&W mode and let the printer manage the print, not the software. This decouples the print also from any differences of ICC profiles. Select a paper which comes closest to the papers in front of you, in this case something like Archival Matte or Velvet (don‘t know how they are called in the P5000 driver). I have not seen such differences between Arches 88 and HM PR Baryta Matt with my P900. Color gamut is even slightly better with the HM, sharpness also because of the Baryta content.

expose for the shadows and develop for the highlights. Measure the shadow, close 2 stops and reduce your time of developing x 0.6 or x 0.7 depending on the delta between shadows and highlights more than 5 stops
