Excellent topic master Yang. My practice is constantly evolving, but whenever I think to make modifications I will discuss them with my teacher and it always leads to a deeper understanding. I'm also glad to hear your talks with master Ronnie Yee have gone well.
similar to a japanese concept of mastery, called shuhari (守破離), where shu is protect, ha is detach, and ri is separate. the problems with this concept is, as your colleague mentioned, some people would change it to fit their own preferences too soon. maybe they think they're already in the level of ha before they finish the level of shu. but the other side of this problem is, nowadays people are too busy, they have to move around to many different places, or there's school or work, or other obligations and situations that make it difficult to follow only one teacher for a long time to complete the level of shu. if they do have time, they may need to follow other teachers or other traditions. so in other words, it may be necessary for them to jump to the level of ha or even ri from the start, and it is the only way they can train martial arts in today's lifestyle :(
