There are many comments mentioning this but I want to say it again: Most Indian audiences are attracted more towards actors and actresses than actual acting. So when a movie like this comes out they say: Oh that was some solid acting. We never really talk about the underlying nuances as much. So I want to say this about this channel: You sir, in a span of three months given me more insight into Indian cinema that I have ever had up until now. You have clawed in deep, put your hearts into it and created something so pure and magical that it resonates with all of us. Take a bow Rick and Korbin. P. S. : I need to read up on my Shakespeare.

@garimaheath
@garimaheath 5 лет назад
Prayank Lalan - I can see why everyone thinks it’s about Stockholm Syndrome and the kidnappée falls for the kidnapper. But it really isn’t. She feels safest with him because she for the first time in her life truly feels protected. And she had her entire family’s behavior to contrast that feeling with. Anyway. No spoilers. But it’s a great movie. And Randeep Hooda’s interpretation of the anger someone who has lived his life feels, the deep sense of betrayal, heartbreak, injustice.... is felt by someone who is very decent and loving ...
@prayanklalan5138
@prayanklalan5138 5 лет назад
@@garimaheath Exactly! You and me seem to be on the same page with regards to our views on the subject but for the benefit of anyone else going through this thread, Stockholm Syndrome is when the victim puts a positive spin on the atrocities inflicted by the kidnapper. They do so as to create a defence mechanism in a hopeless situation to counter the hopelessness and grief. So, the kidnapper still continues to be horrible to the subject but the victim's perception of the acts shifts. If I say anything further, I'll stray into spoiler territory so I'll restrain myself but yeah, IMO there's no depiction of the Stockholm Syndrome in the movie. But yeah it's a fairly understandable mistake to make as a viewer. I invite a discussion on the subject if one feels I'm wrong but not if you are one of the pretentious gang who needs to educate the plebs about how 'Highway' was all about the Stockholm Syndrome. You, yeah you, YOU CAN F*CK RIGHT OFF!
@garimaheath
@garimaheath 5 лет назад
Prayank Lalan - well I am not angry... I haven’t run into that pretentious gang. And if I did, it doesn’t bother me. Everyone is entitled to their opinions. It , in no way , diminishes my admiration, enjoyment, empathy for the characters in this movie. It still is sublime and pure and honest. One of the best movies I have seen in a while. The greatness of it is an amalgamation of all the actors and where the director Imtiaz Ali was in his journey... great work.

I watched the 4-5 hour version with kenneth as the lead from the 90s after watching haider because i just wanted to know the actual play in a way that i could understand. I understood it all but i still couldn't shake the feeling that haider, an india movie that mot many people actually know about outside of Pakistan and india, is the best adaptation of a Shakespearean play ever made. But the brilliance of this film is that while it succeedes so hard in the adaptation of Shakespeare in a contemporary setting, it also manages to stay true to what it was trying to accomplish. It used Shakespeare as a means to comment on kashmir. I think that's just fantastic. The situation of Kashmir is the most closest to home to us Pakistanis and indians and seeing an indian director (i am Pakistani) portray the tragedy of Kashmir in the most honest way possible was the most heart warming and heartbreaking thing possible. Everything he was commenting on from how the rebels are treated, how people are mostly concerned with entertainment which was brilliantly portrayed by putting captors in the shadow of a projector, and the two characters you didn't like (which was the director commenting on the influence of mainstream media in people's minds by the way. That's why they are over the top. They were supposed to comment on the over the top drama of Bollywood), i could relate to it all. I have never felt this way about Shakespeare before. Ever. I always felt Shakespeare was something i would never be able to understand due to his use of language but this film made me believe otherwise.

I would love to listen to your extended review of this movie because I do know that you have much more to say! Feels so good to find people who can appreciate the genius of Mr. Bharadwaj, especially in his Shakespearean trilogy. Great job! 😊💫

The problem is that bollywood hasn't sent out so many of it's brilliant films for an oscar nomination or a foreign film festival whereas it's winning endless awards here in India and then the foreign audience doesn't get to experience it.

Phenomenal performance of Pankaj Kapoor(Shahid Kapoor's father) in Maqbool(adaptation of Macbeth by Vishal Bharadwaj) is by far one of the best acting performances in Bollywood

@Rick I'm so happy that Haider has touched you deeply knowing how emotionally connected you're with Hamlet. It's my best film of this decade... A masterpiece in every level. Please watch Omkara (Othello) and Maqbool (Macbeth) from the same director. No other film maker in India understands Shakespeare better than him.

"Macbeth" was made into "Maqbool", starring Irrfan Khan and Tabu "Othello" was made into "Omkara". "Haider" completes the trilogy by the same director, Vishal Bhardwaj I felt Omkara was closer to Shakespeare than the other too. You should watch it. P.S. "Ram-Leela" by Sanjay Leela Bansali is his take on Romeo and Juliet.

I kind of wish I could have watched this WITH Rick as he was watching it and watch my own emotions play out in him. I am as obsessed with Hamlet as he is and I was as proud (as an Indian) and blown away by this adaptation (as a theater geek), and I am constantly amazed at how Rick keeps being able to cut straight to the core of all the brilliance of the good Bollywood movies, DESPITE the language barrier.

What an awesome review guys, I love movies but don’t always understand the nuances of movie making. This review was such a revelation that I will go back and watch the movie again and I was waiting for Rick’s review with bated breath, knowing how much he loves Shakespeare and Hamlet. I love Vishal Bhardwaj movies so it was so wonderful to see Korbin and especially Rick appreciate it. I thought you guys may find flaws in it and was pleasantly surprised at such a positive review.

I'm so happy you loved this movie as much as you did. It's the only movie till date that I watched five times in the theater. Just couldn't get enough of it. You mentioned everything. Something that really moved me too was the sighing presence of Kashmir and her grief. Also Vishal Bharadwaj's comment on the unreal and disconnected cinema of the time (the song video playing in the background while Haider and Arshi look for his father). The naming of the two Salmans is also pure genius in what it says about their identity or the lack of it. Shahid has been one of the most versatile actors of Bollywood for sometime now. At times I feel he shouldn't have done a character like Rawal Ratan Singh in Padmavat. I mean I know it turned out to be a huge hit. Still I just wish the character had been better backed by writer / director. It's almost a waste to have an actor of Shahid Kapoor's calibre and then not use him to anywhere close to his potential. Anyways, he just keeps getting better with every film. Fantastic review! Thanks

The reason that this movie is so important apart from being genius is that this is probably the first attempt on this scale to bring out the actual truth of the Kashmir issue in front of the people. The media is always portraying a completely biased side of story, making the disappearances sound like terrorists were killed etc etc. Making this movie required balls of steel. There was so much opposition from the political parties and people in general because nobody wants to hear the truth, nobody wants to know that the army that they have been brought up to worship from a distance can torture innocent people. I personally have been called unspeakable things just because I supported the movie and loved it by people who didn't even know what's going on there.

Hey Rick and Korbin, I've been a silent subscriber and viewer of your reaction and review videos and I just couldn't stop myself from commenting on this one. Usually when people put up reaction videos, they end up either unnecessarily praising or blatantly criticizing the movie without actually being legitimate and honest. Thank you for so honest with your reviews and I have started looking forward to watching whole movie reviews and not just trailer reactions. Keep it up guys! You're doing a great job. I look forward to commenting on your future uploads. As a recommendation, do check out Omkara and Maqbool because they're brilliant pieces of work. Especially Omkara. You might not get good trailers for these movies but yeah, they're brilliant movies. PS: Chutzpah pronunciation was intentional to parallel it with some hindi swear words! =P

18:50 that's a great point to be noted and I'm sure that's what the director intended as well bcos the conflict in Kashmir which is the backdrop of the movie was instigated and evolved as a result of nut case British actions like the partition and the resulting instrument of accession . And so he's implying that such actions could only come out of the insane asylum that 20th century England was !

Rick, my man - we're a former British Colony. We know Shakespeare. We study him in school [At Least abridged Shakespeare]. By the time I was out of high school, I knew A Merchant of Venice, Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, The Tempest, A Midsummer Night's Dream and King Lear - just by passing my English classes. So, any Indian that has passed high school, is at least aware of 6 Shakespeare plays. Those who love storytelling have had all the Shakespeare plays available to us easy enough through school, public, even private libraries and bookstores (then came the internet).

Wish you knew that the word 'Chutzpah' is not just a pun on the Hindi slang 'Chutiyapa' as most people have pointed out in their comments, but also, and even more importantly, a pun on the AFSPA (the Armed Forces Special Powers) Act that grants special legal immunity to acts of the Indian armed forces in regions like Kashmir which is a cause for major state-inflicted atrocities there. 'Chutzpah' is much deeper than even the original 'Khutspah' word!
