He was content to love her and be there for her. Unfortunately the emperor, only viewed women as objects. That two people could care for each other and never be physical with each other, was beyond his comprehension. I can't blame him, after all the other women in his life never cared for him. Yawan used him, his wife saw him as a servant since she was from a higher class, and the emperor's view changed with his mood. The only character that treated him well consistently was Ruyi. How could he not love her?? Out of all the characters, he was the most abused. Yet he stayed loyal to his superiors. He never turned on anybody, even Yawan when she deserved it. He was one of my favorites. Hopefully he will have peace in the next life.

@@debrasaunders7200 I feel less like its not that she doesn't trust Ryui but more that she's Ryui's shadow hand. Hailan owes so much to Ryui, including her life and her status. But as both have learned in the palace, there is no way you can live peacefully without getting bloody hands. But in Hailan's eyes an Empress should have clean hands, and Ryui with her kind and gentle self, this is exponentially so. So Hailan took it upon herself to be Ryui's knife in the shadows.

It was said more against Yanwan than against Ling. In her heart Hailan knew that Yahwen wouldn't hold anything 'worthless' that couldn't get her far. Ling knows this too. Ling gave it to Hailan in the heartfelt hope that she could use it to free Ryui from the strife of it all and Hailan uses it with the Emperor to bring Yanwan down thus completing his wish.

No I think what she meant by worthless was the monetary value of it, which was cheap in comparison to the other jewelry and valuables she had.

It's a shame how this adaptation played out because in the play he's not that bad. The play is about 'the Wei Woman' who was a real person, and did become the Imperial Noble Consort. History recorded Qianlong as being a pretty good ruler compared to his prior and subsequent Emperors. Consort Xian is just a supporting character in the play. I feel kind of bad about how people watching this version assume he was so monstrous in the play and real life.

I read this somewhere, but I think they executed him using an ancient method. You would place wet pieces of paper on the person’s face one by one, therefore suffocating them.

I'm no torture/execution PHD but from what I've read, they wet something like paper or cloth and place it on the victim's face one layer after another. The stuff sticks well to a person's face and makes it hard for them to breathe. By the third or fourth layer, the victim should already have suffocated and died. It's supposed to be a relatively silent execution method, but somehow Hailan can hear his last breaths from down the hall... Hmm.

I'm guessing he suffocated because of the heavy weight of the log on his chest. Other cultures have used similar techniques of weights placed on the chest to suffocate people, including in the Salem witch trials.

According to the article I found, this execution method is one that's supposed to send a person off "peacefully" without sounds or struggles. That's what all the chains and stuff were for. The actual execution is supposed to involve taking something like paper or cloth (not sure what it's called), making it wet and then placing it on the victim's face. The wet stuff sticks to a person's face easily and makes breathing difficult. When 3 or 4 layers have been placed on their face, the victim would usually have already suffocated and died. The article I found says it's an execution meant to have the victim struggle as little as possible and keep them as quiet as possible. Hailan probably has super hearing so she could hear the poor guy's last breaths

@@circle3565 i don’t think it’s meant to have the victim die peacefully, but rather die in a torturous way. The method is actually considered ruthless, giving the victims a slow and painful death as compared to other quick deaths like beheading. Hailan purposely chose this cruel method in order to convince the emperor that the empress had no feelings for Ling YunChe. After his death and when the emperor learns of the execution method, he mentioned its a cruel method and that the empress didn’t go “light handed”.

@@circle3565 the loud breathing was a cinematic effect so the audience could hear, but not see, his end. Re Hailan, it may also have been symbolic that she would have his death on her conscience.

Shu was the only one who said she loved him besides Ruyi, she then killed herself when she realized that he didn't regard her as anything but an object to own. He wasn't upset she died, but was upset that the death affected the birth of Ruyi's child. As he confronted the women he had condemned for crimes of betrayal and murder before they died, each told him that they may have shown fidelity outwardly, but they never gave him their love.
