Hehehehehehehe. You poor thing, you. So, you really believe, even after that fact that Pre's PR dropped a measly one second (13:22.8 to 13:21.8) in the two years since Munich that he can drop 12 seconds in four years? And this 13:21.8 was at age 23, the age when Viren ran 13:16.4 and 27:38.xx, PRs much faster than Pre's. You can only assume that Pre woulda, coulda, shoulda since he died. Goes to show you: don't drink and drive!
Pre probably said he'd run 12:36 in a 3 mile race, not a 5K race. A 12:36 3 mile, 4:12 per mile, is the equivalent of a 13:07.5 5K, which is faster than the then WR pace, but not faster than Gebreselassie. You have that woulda, coulda, shoulda argument... so what if Pre said he could run 12:36? El G said he could run 3:23-3:24, which he probably could have done, but never did. Face it: Pre, though a great runner, was no match for his contemporaries, most prominently Viren.
So, what you are saying is that Pre would have improved his PB from 13:21.8 in 1974 to below 12'37"35, faster than people who have gone WAY faster as a 5K split of a 10K race. Well, your comment about 3 miles and 3.1 miles reveals your total collective stupidity when it comes to athletics. 5000m vs. 4827m... in distance it's not much, but adding time, it makes a VERY BIG DIFFERENCE. The truth: Pre could neither smoke Viren, nor he could he ever smoke Gebreselassie or anybody in this race.
And yes, I am a very active runner, who's raced over both 3 miles and 5000 meters, and I'd know that there is good diference between the two. If you are a top runner, look at your PBs over 3 miles and 5K; observe the difference between the two, and you'll know what I mean when I say that Pre could not have come close to beating Gebreselassie, let alone his contemporaries.
I see. I hope you realize that my comment was to someone called me a "f$%^" and said that Pre could run 12:36 for 5000 meters. I know all about Pre, his American records, titles, and victories well enough to tell you that Pre could 12:36 for 5000 meters (or even 3 miles) is hogwash.
What the hell are you talking about? He couldn't beat his contemporaries (i.e. Viren), so now you think he could defeat a man with a 5000m PB a dozen seconds faster than his 4827 meters (3 miles). Ignorance.
in 76 if pre would've lived, he wouldve hammered viren and the rest of the field. he wouldve been the world record holder, and his world record would still be the record today. U sound like someone who hasn't ran in ur life. 3 miles and 3.1 miles isn't much of a difference. don't argue with a top runner
Haile GebreSelassie is now a successful business man, a 4star resort hotel, a mall, an entertainment complex, a car assembly plant, a tour operation. Also a free private school for the poor in his home town. A list of world records, including the Marathon, he also is the owner of the best smiles a man can have.
To be fair, I will give Pre credit for coming ahead of Emiel Puttemans in Munich, the man who would later set a WR (13:13.0) that would last a few years and the 10K silver medalist (behind Viren).
no....but blood doping does....it increases the number of red blood cells in a person's blood chemestry. In turn this increases the amount of oxygen the body is able to carry to the muscles...=D
for me haile is the greatset of all time. he has showed that he master all distanses. The finnish he.s doing is the worst i´ve seen. It was the same when he beated Komen last year.
ya ok... lets say pre was born into the 21st century... with his guts, he would've hammered these guys. im not sayin haile isn't great, but u have to remember... Pre said right before he died that he would run his next race in 12:36... U couldn't predict what could've have happened, but he was hard headed and would've done it.
