I had to sing this in my high school choir. I liked the song, but had no interest in seeing the movie. Years later I saw the movie on TV and I watched it all the way through and fell in love with it. The songs are awesome and John Travolta as the mom was hilarious!! He was GREAT in that movie!
This song pretty much encompasses everything that makes Hairspray a great musical: the energy, the color (not referring to the racial discussions in the plot here), the messages it communicates. It's an incredibly well-put-together show, whether on the stage or screen. No matter how you view it, this song will make you wanna get up and shake and shimmy right along with the cast!
Singing this song while dancing is the most grueling part of the musical, but the most fun! (Though you need the lung capacity of approximately 10,000 gallons.)
Listening to this during the Coronavirus pandemic. It really speaks to everything that goes on currently, as well as the past. This is definitely gonna be a celebratory song when we can finally get out and about. Life around us goes on and love is immortal.
I sang this in HS as Penny, definitely not my finest moment. Both the girl originally supposed play her and the understudy got food poisoning the night before bc they were friends. The director knew I was only one in stage crew who could sing and she was having trouble finding a replacement bc of short notice, so I took one for the team. I had to learn my lines, the song AND choreography overnight. Everyone was up all night. Then when the school closed, I was up till 8am practicing in my room. Now I’ve memorized plenty of songs in minutes but this definitely takes the cake. I was so nervous I threw up in full costume beforehand but I think I did pretty good.
Was it 2 collage age girls doing a finale dance from when they were eight on a beach in the dark in a crowd of unsuspecting people at a silent rave screeching with excitement inappropriate ?

Our school was doing a production of Hair spray last year and my friend wanted to be the lead, Tracey, so she auditioned and was told she was 'too skinny' for the role so she gained a hell load of weight only to find out that the role had already been taken by someone else 😂

I remember in 6th grade my Chorus teacher had us pick a musical to watch since we had nothing to do and we all wanted to watch grease but he said no we got to watch hairspray instead and who knew we’d all end up loving it.
The meaning of the songs is amazing! Doesn't matter how conservative you are. You can't stop change. Love yourself and shake it! Cuz no one can stop you. :)
In my school's Hairspray production, for the song 'Mama, I'm a Big Girl Now', our director added eight other moms and daughters. I'm paired with my very best friend as her daughter... Here's the funny part... The first is that we were paired because she was taller than me, and everyone else in the group they were closing from, and I was the shortest, of everyone in the group they were choosing from. The funniest thing is that she's *younger than me* ! But I'm so excited to be a part of this production!

You know, I generally hate musicals. I have a strong bitterness towards them... and Hairspray? It actually wasn't bad. This is actually a decent song :D
