The drones are definitely "tuned" for a different era of piping. For a beginner looking for a "cheap" set of pipes, these might not be what you are looking for especially if you are planning to play in a band, and most likely a pipe instructor would steer you toward a used set of "standard" pipes to start with.

I love the look of the pipes. I suspected immediately that they are Shesham pipes as I have worked on 2 sets of Shesham highland pipes and they are very light but in my opinion they sound great so I am a fan of the Shesham sound. I am surprised at the colouring coming off the drones, that's strange. I had the same problem with the bass so I put in a cane drone reed and after some fiddling it worked but as usual they "bottomed out" so I cut off a little of the cane at the open end and that worked somewhat, but I am still working on them. I am really looking forward to hearing your set play. Is the hakam din chanter beyond redemption? I bought Pakistan reeds and found one that worked in my Pakistan chanter although I also drilled out the reed seat a little to sharpen the chanter a little. Two great videos thanks for sharing. Looking forward to the next.

I have some Pakistani chanter reeds, but they are gut busters. I'll figure something out though. Abedour (?) chanter reeds seemed to work well waay back in the 2000's, but something has changed over the years, not bad, just different. Yes !! the shesham tone is BIIIG !!! I have to take it easy with the Shepherd "easy" reed because it seems to be working well with the Warnock chanter and I don't want to use it up, right now the pipes are almost as easy as a set of small pipes. The drone reeds I'm using are old Balance Tone, grey reeds that I brought back to life, but I don't know how long they will last LOL.

They are traditionally made from recyled fish- boxes. the better ones are made from out-house doors the smell is a giveaway

Sir I am a Scot, I liked your description of the pipes that you bought. However could I suggest that rather than just describing the highland bagpipe you actually play the damn thing
