As someone from the UK these guys don't know how offensive the word Pak* is and was. Growing up and hearing the hate behind word was crazy and I'm a 90's baby. It was worse during the 60's and 70's.
Fairs (and thanks), but I will be honest The word itself personally has been much less inflicting than when I would be doing whatever minding my business, and someone from my school year would come across the corridor dancing and yelling "roti salan" or sumn.
It got worse in the 70’s because after Enoch Powells Rivers of Blood speech the huge anti immigration sentiment and media coverage led to violent attacks which were known as “Paki Bashing” or “Skin-head terror”. They were often targeted because they were stereo-typed as weak and passive, unwilling to fight back. Wiki it.
I understand that but someone just saying it shouldent be a problem but Ik the world never gonna be like that there’s always someone that gonna get mad about it I mean the thing with ksi the foo went to a place to tell him more about the word and the guy explaining it to him said there was nothing wrong with what ksi did just ppl on the internet getting mad about it
The P word in the UK is only ever used as a racist insult towards brown people, irrespective of whether they originate from Pakistan or not. Neo Nazis used to target brown people as a pastime and call it p*ki bashing. Outside the UK, the word does not carry the same meaning. This is why it was a big controversy in the UK only.
@@invictus143 It absolutely is. Everyone in the UK knows calling anyone that word is being racist. Racists use it on anyone vaguely brown and it's always racist whether they're Pakistani or not. I understand that it might be confusing to non-British people, and I can understand those asking for clarification if it's really that bad, but it is one of those things where they just have to listen to Brits when we say yeah, it's really fucking bad. Don't ever use it on anyone
@@invictus143 yeah man cause when a racist is about to go beat you up for being brown, hes going to make sure that he uses the appropriate insult to categorise each south asian.
Its also based off the culture, like most cultures get offended easily. Us english have no worry if you call us Englishmen. But the minute you say chinaman, its supposably bad. It's just straight hypocrisy
@@MrHammerman97 Ive had this discussion before. Chinaman is a word used as a slur historically from when the chinese were slaves building the railroads. This is why.
@@tat2masheen It's 2023...I'm talking about present day use. I mean unless you think we should ban people saying Irishmen, Scotsmen, Englishmen? But again, us Europeans aren't petty.

@@tat2masheen I think your trying to find racism in todays world by bringing up the past. I think your the racist. Move on, be a better human. Words like Chinaman are defiantly not used now in a hateful way as i pointed out.
The point missing about the P word in the UK, is its not only used by racists against people from Pakistan, but used to generalise anyone with the same skin tone even if they're Indian or from somewhere else in asia
“Everyone wants their n word” lmao, Andrew can be really really really dumb and oblivious at times. I genuinely thought his comedy was about empathising and really getting other cultures but I guess he is just an oblivious ignorant white guy at the end of the day.
he’s such an idiot on purpose like no way you’re trying to tell a white British man that actually that slur isn’t racist and playing dumb about it. Andrew is American, if anyone knows anything about offensive racial words it’s HIM. Yeah that word doesn’t get much traction in the USA but telling a British man that it’s not offensive AFTER he told you it’s offensive is crazy
Crazy...😂 and he was lecturing charla about the gyp comment on brilliant idiots. Paki in the UK is LITERALLY only used as a racist term to ALL South Asians its never a colloquial shorthand term used. People had their homes burned down, killed and were bullied throughout school and that was the accompanying word. It's not the word it's the history. That's why somalis in Britain's don't care about the N word or Paki because its not part of their cultural history
@@skp8748 facts Andrew was just being retarded 😂he was literally asking why it’s offensive and ignoring Adam when he said it’s used towards people from Southern Asia not just Pakistan 💀shit flew over his head
For any Americans wondering about why its so obvious English influencers shouldn't say that word, watch the film This Is England its a brilliant window into what racial/immigrant tensions was like back in the day.

Andrew acting like he cant wrap his head around the idea that a word is considered derogatory because of the common intent is so annoying. "Its just the short form 🤓"
Exactly he spent 20mins telling off charlamagne about him believing the word Gyp to mean thief... Charlamagne said he didnt even know it was short for gypsy and he assumed it was just a sound effect of stealing. He said doesn't know any gypsy people besides there was there a history of violence against gypsy people in the US... Andrew standing up for KSI who is ABSOLUTELY aware of the decades of violence, death and bullying an entire racial group suffered with that word being used is brazy
@andrewschulz the word is offensive to brown ppl in the UK for how it was used for the past 50+ years. If you were a kid and had a group of white guys use that word and tell you to go back to your country while you were walking back home with your mother you would have an idea what that means. It's just a word use for non-whites and it was used with hate. Other ppl around the world who don't live in UK haven't faced that word so they have no clue.
Tbh, The worlds ignorance to the P word is understandable, but KSI literally knew better. He even prefaced it in the moment that he knew it was offensive. No defending it if you live in the UK.
Not really, most countries have words that are offensive and not all are known around the world. 😂 He might think that youre insane for not thinking words like 'Micky' and 'Spic' are not so bad. Depends on where you are from...
Adam Rowe did a really bad job of explaining why its offensive. He didn't bring up why the word was used and when it was used and how it was used initially in the late 60's to 70's and to this day. He didn't inform them of the history behind the word which is why these guys assumed it to be a modern made up word to attack people from a certain background.
@@justinlundy6544 and? Rowe will be a bigger comic than Rogan in this little world of ours even though Joe Rogan is a legend himself. To do what he has done from the little old UK Is brilliant ❤
The thing they don't understand from the debate about the P word is this isn't a new thing. This isn't something that has just emerged in the time of being woke. As long as south Asians (not just Pakistani people) have been in the UK it has been used in a derogatory way. So we're going back at least to the 60s. It was never short for, it was always with malice. You need to Ignore the fact that it's short for Pakistan on this one. The fact in the US or Australia it isn't derogatory shouldn't take from the fact in the UK it is, the world is a big place and not everyone is the same. I'm not even PC, I'm just a black guy from the UK who knows the same people who say the N word with malice would say the P word too and have done for decades. That's all you need to know.
How south Asians were treated through British colonialism is why that P- word is offensive. It was the word used to verbally abuse anyone of south Asian descent, it’s a derogatory term.
The dude in the moustache just seems like he’s just being intentionally obtuse. Also the P word was used against all South Asian when they were violently attacked and their homes and businesses were attacked and destroyed. It has a history and has a negative connotation for the culture of the UK, Americans don’t have to get it but that’s the reality of British history so you should at least be able to acknowledge that.
What makes a word offensive is the history attached to it. The N word is offensive because people referred to slaves with that word, and carried on the hate after slavery, using it as a derogatory term during segregation and lynching etc. When large groups of south Asians first started coming to the UK in the 50s/60s people use the P word as an insult when carrying out violent attacks and hate crimes towards south Asians. There was even a thing called ‘P**I bashing’ whereby far right thugs would go out and find Asians to attack and beat up. Bricks through windows, hate crime towards women in hijabs and institutionalised bullying in workforces and schools was also extremely prevalent, p**i’s go home being a popular saying among many racists. So although it may not hold as much weight as the N word, the P word has a dark history in the UK, hence it is still regarded as offensive and is not just a ‘short form’ of saying Pakistani in the same way Aussie is short for Australian. There is no affection or love associated with that word whatsoever as many Asians who’s parents and grandparents immigrated to the country will tell you. And yeah if you go to any asian area in the UK today and try use that word, you’ll probably find out very quickly whether it’s acceptable or not Schulzy killed me with the whole Bango Pako thing though😭🤣
The amount of times Adam tried to give some weight / explanation to the understandably ignorant flagrant gang he was cut off..if the let him land maybe they'd have understood it's significance. Im a 37 year old punjabi sikh man born and bred in east london - remember being called a "smelly effin paki" and told to "go back to paki curry land"...when i was in year 5 - 11 years old. It definitely is born out pf malice, hate and intended for harm.
Not to mention it had nothing to do with Pakistanis you could be bald Sri Lankan Buddhist, bindu sporting indian Hindu, turban wearing Sikh or a hijab wearing bengali and there would be no difference to alcohol drinking Pakistani with an English mother all would get the same abuse
I'm struggling to understand if they're just playing stupid for a bit or honestly really that thick. Either way its exhausting listening to this degree of willful ignorance
lol you say I don't understand the word Paki - but then don't allow Adam to explain the reason behind it - south asian opression has happened as long as slavery - but unfortunately the ignorance of some American's of anything outside of America is impressive.
He only does that when he's talking to Americans. Watch Have a Word and he never does it. I think it's part of his efforts to make him more understandable to American ears, which I completely understand, even though I don't think that part actually helps, just an affectation that goes along with the softening of his accent. I have a significantly weaker version of Adam's accent but even I have to soften it up a bit when in America.
@@duggs4456 I will check that out, but considering both him and Paddy the Baddy do it, I just thought it was instinctual. Idk though lol. All I know is I like it. Also, I’m able to understand even thick Scottish accents, so scousers are easy to comprehend in that regard. I can understand why some brits would try to tone it down because similarly some Americans just cannot be bothered to try to understand the real accent or just simply can’t comprehend it. The only thing I can’t understand is some of the vocabulary just because I’m not from the region. 8:31 this is a perfect example of why I love it! Just don’t ask me to understand whatever the fk someone from Glasgow said! 😂😂
@@neverleft636 yeah man, a lot of Americans are fine with it, its just easier to walk the pace of your slowest member, so to speak. Even if most will be fine it's better to try and be intelligible to all of you right off the bat in my experience. Just leads to fewer awkward moments. I don't completely change the accent, just take the edge off
I love you guys, absolutely fantastic podcast. Followed this from the first set with Kaz. I do just want to say, and hopefully you read this. The P word for me is not about being offended by it. It just stings when I hear it. Reminder of being harrased by that word as a child, due to the venom that was put behind it. I agree that it's a shortening of a word, and should not be offensive. It is not offensive as much as it stings to hear because it was weaponized to hurt South Asians as Adam pointed. Not meant to dampen the mood of an amazing Pod, just want to shed light on why such outrage of KSI..... now go back to being flagrant. #assholearmy
yeah the word is a slur because it comes from 'paki-bashing' not because its short for pakistani, just for people that were curious. South asians suffered a history of violence by far right groups and racists in the uk and its linked to that history
Jews get called a lot of stuff and nobody suffered like them. It takes a Kanye level event for them to start calling for “cancellation” bro just grow up and be like “Man that was dumb they couldn’t even come up with a legit word for us lol” and move the fuck on. KSI didn’t do anything wrong
All you have to do is google that P word, it has history, people got killed, spat on, thrown things at while being called that word, thats why it's offensive to them
Chat gpt isnt good for comedy if you dont know how to prompt it. I was playing with it today, i jailbroke a conversation and told it to assume Mark Normand's identity (i chose Mark because he is a robot), i then fed it the entire transcript for Dont be yourself and asked it to create a 15 minute set. Some of the jokes were bad some had good premises and needed a bit of punching up. After further custimization it was able to create atleast a Late night level set. You need to make sure you feed it large refrences and the GPT-4 bot its able to interpret context for jokes suprisingly well
I thought i should post it so you can decide if you think AI has potential. It's definetly not comedy gold but it beats Gringo Papi. Hey, what's up everybody? Great to be here tonight. You know, it's always a little nerve-wracking performing in front of a crowd. I feel like I'm up here trying to sell you all something, but I don't really have a product. I'm like a door-to-door salesman, except I'm selling jokes. And let's be honest, half of you probably won't get your money's worth. Speaking of money, how about that inflation, huh? Everything's so expensive these days. I went to the grocery store the other day and I saw a cantaloupe that cost more than my rent. And don't even get me started on gas prices. I swear, every time I fill up my tank it's like I'm making a donation to OPEC. Now, I know some of you are probably thinking, "Who is this guy and why is he up here?" Well, let me tell you a little bit about myself. I'm from the South, but I don't have a Southern accent. And no, I'm not gay, even though my voice might suggest otherwise. I just have one of those voices that makes people want to trust me with their secrets. But enough about me. Let's talk about you guys. Anybody here single? Yeah? Me too. I'm so single, I think my phone's broken. It never rings unless it's a spam call. And even then, they hang up on me after a few seconds. But you know what they say, being single is like a box of chocolates. Eventually, you eat them all and you're left with nothing but regret. But seriously, dating is tough. You have to pretend to be interested in someone's hobbies and opinions just so you can sleep with them. And don't even get me started on online dating. It's like a never-ending job interview, except you're trying to find someone to share your life with. And let's be real, most of the time you're just looking for someone who won't kill you in your sleep. You know what's tough? Dating, especially as you get older. When you're young, you think it's all fun and games, but then you hit your thirties, and suddenly you're on Tinder at 3 am, swiping with your gut out. And let me tell you, that's not a pretty sight. I mean, they should have a policy on Tinder where the last photo is a candid shot of you on the toilet at 3 am, just to avoid any potential catfishing. So, I finally got a match the other day. I was pretty excited, but then I met her, and she turned out to be a complete psycho. I should have seen the signs, really. I mean, who would have thought a stranger on the internet could be crazy, right? But, hey, at least she knew how to throw down in bed. I don't mind a little bit of crazy as long as it comes with good sex. Anyway, after that disaster, I decided to look for a therapist. You know, someone to help me sort out my life and my issues. But let me tell you, finding a good therapist is harder than finding a good date. You have to avoid all the whackos and the ones who just want to take your money. And when you finally find a good one, you go to pay for your first session, and you realize you can't afford to be mentally sane. I mean, seriously, have you seen how much they charge per hour? It's like they're preying on vulnerable people. And you know what's worse than not being able to afford a good therapist? Having your card declined after your appointment. Let me tell you, those therapists are good at building you up, but they're even better at tearing you down. I mean, I gave this guy all the ammo, i heard my card go *beep* *BEBEBEEEP*, "No wonder your mom thinks you're a disapointment." But enough about me, let's talk about you guys. I heard there's some people in the audience tonight who are celebrating their anniversary. Congratulations! You know, they say the secret to a long and happy marriage is communication. And by communication, they mean learning how to say "yes, dear" without actually saying "yes, dear." Well, that's my time for tonight. Thanks for coming out, everybody. Remember, don't be yourself. Unless you're already awesome, then just keep doing what you're doing.
Just a bit of information on where the slur comes from since u guys were curious lmao, the word p*ki comes from p*ki-bashing, where brown people were regularly attacked by far right groups and their businesses and shops brutalised which used to happen far more regularly in the 1960s. The history of violence is what gave the term power, its not just brown people trying to claim their n word lmao, but its a british exclusive thing so just a little insight into why it exists. Love the pod guys

Little inside history on British Indian food, majority of Indian labelled restaurants were established by Bangladeshi immigrants around the 60s. One of the main reasons for this was they felt nobody would recognise Bangladeshi cuisine commercially, even though it's very similar to Indian. Currently most Indian restaurants and Curry houses continue to be run by Bangladeshi chefs and owners with some slowly rebranding to recognise it's Bengali origins.
The P word is used entirely in the context of being offensive. It is hard to explain but it's used the same way as the N word. Nobody uses it to be geographically accurate.
you need to understand the history and context that slur is used, women were getting their hijabs ripped of and shouted slurrs and stuff thrown at them.
There are two kinds of people who use the p-word. Those who use it with malice and those who try to use it as an equivalent to the n word thinking its cool but it isn't. Majority of south east asians born in the uk pre 2000 know the significance and context of the word. All the Pakistanis I know don't use it as a term of endearment and those that do use it think they are gangster😅. You welcome to visit the Uk and try saying it to find out what happens 😂
Hezzy needs to take the L on this one. I can see why someone outside the UK might not understand, but once it's explained, they shouldn't dismiss it as stupid just because it's an abbreviation. The word has been associated with hate and violence, making them feel unwelcome and alienated in the place they now must consider home and their children were born & raised. Those memories make the word difficult to detach from their emotions. For example, black people don’t hate the N word because it’s an entirely different word to anything, it’s the history attached to it.
@Fragrant, boys the word “Paki” was used back in the 1960-1990s as a derogatory way to refer to any Asian (brown Asian, which is just Asian in the UK). The word could be anything but it was a way to look down on them. In the UK this was when racism was rife and “Paki Bashing” was white skinheads were going round beating Asians and migrants for simply being Asian. It’s not new, but it’s historic and it’s the generation before us that had to deal with the brunt of it as migrants in this country. The point about corner shops is still racist so like your guest said his dad would call it the “Paki shop” would be the same as saying the “N- shop” for a shop run by black people. If you need help with UK Asian (Brown Asian) culture and stuff HMU.
Loved the pod Adam is so good, him and Dan are killing it in the uk. Great seeing Jamie Hutchinson getting recognition too I almost crashed my work vehicle multiple times driving when listening to that episode on audio
I understand where Andrew is coming from but Race isnt the same all over the world. The racism in Spain against Morrocans isnt the same as racism in the UK against Pakistani's/South indians or the racism in the US against Black people. Also a lot of the racist history in Europe against other countries is based and rooted in Colonism and Exploitation. If you look into the hundreds of years of British expoitation and the deaths caused in India/Pakistan/Bangladesh, you will understandwhy people of brown skin dont want to be called a word to be looked down on and seperated. Plus a lot of people of South East descent in the UK see themselves as British because of thier values and dont want to be called something to be seperated because Brown skin doesnt make you more from another country because of your ancestry and less British

It's like, 'Dude, I don't think you're the expert here.' And don't even get me started on Twitter. Everybody's got an opinion, but nobody's got any actual experience. It's like a bunch of virgins giving sex advice. 'Yeah, bro, just do the helicopter move. Chicks love that.' No they don't grandma!
As an American who loves Cats Countdown and also watches the Sidemen having that episode removed for the word Paki was so confusing. There is zero context here for it being offensive. Huh. Wild.
It carries a different weight here in the UK. I'm Indian and if anyone calls me that here I would get so furious. It's a racial slur from white people directed to brown people, (Indians, Sri Lankans, Bangladeshis and Pakistanis)
To give some context to Americans who may not realise what the word paki means to south east asians (India, Bangladesh, Pakistan etc) this was a word used heavily by racist brits for years in the late 20th century accompanied by physically attacking brown people. This word is not just a shortenting of the word Pakistani much in the same way the the n word is not just a repurposing of the word negro. Why? because the word holds a history of decades of physical and verbal attacks towards our people in the UK and I'm sure other countries. It shouldn't be written off as not a serious word because it is a shortening that only held weight in the UK because lots of slurs only have history in one specific place that doesn't diminish the significance of it. This has nothing to do with KSI or Schulz I just wanted to explain why the use of the slur is more serious then people may realise
