I remember watching this in Finland and after that move by Mika, the Finnish commentator went absolutely nuts, laughing, cheering and crying, all at the same time...
Yeah I remember this as well. I liked watching but I was so young back then and I wasn't as interested in it as I would be nowadays and it makes me sad. Memories are distant... Anyway this looks even better on board!
@@friktionrc he only went straight... it doesnt seem such a great overtake with a car so quicker... ferrari had wet setup and mclaren dry setup... both on dry track !
Zonta deserves some credit for being aware of what was going on, and keeping his cool. It would be so easy to move to the right to give Schumacher space as he passed, without realising that Hakkinen was coming through on the other side.
In any type of racing all the faster driver/rider/etc wants is predictably. You want to be in the good line, the bad line, right in the way, whatever, just keep doing what you’re doing when we got to you and hold your line.
He admitted in the interview later that he had intended to move to the right to let Schumi overtake, but then he spotted Mika and just held his breath and stood (in motion) still.
@@romanpohanka1886me, as a big time McLaren-fan and then also Räikkönen-fan was happy we were in the fight right until the end. But that Ferrari was just much quicker. We were in contention only thanks to the reliability of that McLaren. Oh the irony.....
Absolutely love the old bus chicane, the no escape zone in La Source and how Mika shortshifts some gears in order to keep the beast under control. Absolutely legendary.
Agreed. Spa should reinstate the bus stop chicane. Fine balance on driving skill and controlled aggression there. ps and the least chicane at Imola before the start too.
A leap of faith from Mika but pays off. Judging by the outrageous blocking by Schumacher on the previous lap, this was literally the only way past! great move, can only assume that Zonta was aware of Mika on the inside
Schumacher was relentless in doing stuff like that which is why Hakkinen did these brilliant things. Hakkinen is still my favorite driver of all time for this.
"outrageous blocking ". Hakkinen never put his wheels beside Schumacher while the latter never waved before aggressively closed the lane. High risk-reward movie from both (Schumacher aggressive defense, Hakkinen attacking).
The first lap is what Mike was talking about in the Schumacher documentary “we can’t battle like this at 300 kph” It’s a fantastic watch so please see it if possible
@@maximum.p I'm new to F1 (Late 2020) so I was hoping for a cool documentary to really learn about "THE MICHAEL" as Hakkinen puts it, but yeah was a bit disappointingly quick on lots of races and rivals.
@@maximum.p Yeah with all the respect in the world im just not interested in his wife and kids. the documentary barely showed any real racing. it was more about his personal life.
I am kinda new to f1. When i first watched this it felt prety natural. Then read the comments and everybody says this is magical. Can you explaim me a bit? I will be very happy thanks
I remember this, like it was yesterday. 14 years old teenager, laughing, screaming, cheering....I was so happy and proud for Mika..and beside me, my brother, a big fan of Schumacher. Never forgot this day.
You are totally right, and before that pre Senna death active every. There is one reason why I liked the TC, I loved the noise it made and you knew the drivers were on it. There is no doubt the new cars are faster, the combined Hybrid Power in the top teams is likely 1000+. However it's boring and it's priced everyone out. When Williams can't compete because they can't buy an engine you have a problem. For like 40 years Cosworth made V8 and V10 customer engines that many utilized for championships, that won't happen now! Fix it!
Hakkinen is insane. He actually took eau rouge completely flat in his second attempt to pass schumi. Difficult enough to do in quali let alone race trim back in those days
It was said that only Senna could afford that corner full gas (telemetry data they reported). It seems that Hakkinen do the same. The small lift we hear is maybe due to the climb. Engine lowers a little RPM even if you keep down the foot. Of course this is my impression, I could be wrong.
I concur. A man of his own kind. Humble, focused as a laser, victorious over another legend more than a few times, ... Those were the times in F1. I still tune in these days, but a lot of the magic is lost, certainly not only, but especially because of the V6 engines. V10 or V12 it is, V10 sounds better though. Those engines give you goosebumps. V6 sound like dead cold feet in comparison.
@@venon1515 Nah, this is by far the most complete track in the calendar, old hockenheim was just long straights connected by chicanes, don't judge me i like old hockenheim too but spa is most complete and most beautiful.
I remember seeing this during the live broadcast. My dad went wild seeing the overtake while I was sour as I was a Schumi fan. But seeing it again, this is one of those moments I got to witness 2 man showcasing their absolute skill, making split second decisions and one prevailing. Hats off to Mr Hakkinen
This was Formula 1 at its finest, Schumacher v Hakkinen, Ferrari v McLaren, iconic tracks and the best wheel to wheel racing Keep fighting Michael 🇩🇪🇩🇪🇩🇪🏎️🏎️🏎️🐐🐐🐐
Remember watching the race live and as a big Mika fan the moment it happen my living room became a mess... everything flew.. plates glasses pillows... everything... better than a goal in injury time.. one of the most monumental scenes of F1... Great Mika...🇫🇮🇫🇮🇫🇮
Isn’t the greatest rivalry in F1 the 50,000 penalties handed out every session?! Shitting in your hands and clapping creates more passes than F1.. There were more passes at Assen MotoGP last year than the entire F1 season. If you like racing, why are you watching these guys durability testing for road car development?
It's really cool to see how much distance Schumacher put on Hakkinen through the second sector and how it all came back down during the third and the first to end in this overtake. The cars seem to be set up very differently.
The Ferrari had a more downforce heavy set up due the rain at the beginning. This gave the McLaren an edge in the straights in the first and last sectors at the cost of time in the slower second sector.
It was at this moment that Mikka Hakkinen put Michael Schumacher's talents firmly into perspective. This is the hardest, bravest and cleanest overtake that I've ever seen. You can almost hear him saying "And STAY there" as he goes past. Brilliant!
this overtake was awesome because in his first try mika couldn´t pass because of a little dirty driving but then in second try he managed to trick schumacher and went on the inside
I was around 10 yrs old and a die-hard Michael fan watching this GP, so I was pretty pissed after Mika overtook the Ferrari. Now, almost 20 yrs later, I realize what an INSANE move he did on Michael. This was pure racing.
1:45 LOVE the way he has to fight the rear under both braking and acceleration - so much better than when traction control came in and then later the battery power.
I saw an interview both explaining that this could happen only due to right weight of fuel and relatively fresh tyres to take l´eau rouge without hesitation. Maybe twice per race. Even if you are Team Schumacher full on. This was the only way to beat him.
Big Boss There were several onboard footages before them, so nothing special. This is how the USA conquers the world: with foolish people through the media.
This is one of few F1 races I actually remember watching as a kid, watching Mika chasing Michael and just do that slit second move and totally surprise Michael. Love this clip and all others of this race
This is what made me love Formula 1, make me get up at 5-6 in the morning to watch a race. I have no reason to watch Formula 1 now even if it was on tv by chance.. I miss this, never loved any sport as I did this, especially watching the underdog Mika Hakkinen is the best feeling you could ever get from watching tv.
@@marble25 This days pussies drive like crazy because they KNOW the cars are almost perfectly safe even to crash from high speeds. Drivers like Verstappen have that style because they never had danger when driving.
