Hal Chittum has been pushing the boundaries of greatness his entire life. Everything he’s ever engaged with he’s exerted limitless focus with an innate ability to understand the exacting process it took to succeed. I was first exposed to this when I entered his Islamorada store in the early 90’s and wanted to buy everything I saw. It was a fly fisherman’s wonderland! The door and handles of my tackle room now are a direct replica of his. His stores were incomparable.
I’ve spoken to Stu Apte about Hal and the two tarpon world records they caught on six pound test on the same day. One was on conventional plug and the other was an 82 pound 8 ounce fly record that stood for decades.
I didn’t meet Hal for the longest time, but everywhere I went his footprints were on the trail I walked. Homosassa, tournaments, records, and the boat I always wanted and finally bought, a Hell’s Bay, from Hal!
Chittum did all those things at a very profound level, but it was his boat building that made a historical, indelible change in the game of how we chase fish. His newest vessel of Chittum Skiffs is the most sophisticated, scientifically designed boat ever built....
On today's podcast Hal uncovers his labyrinth fishing life which leads us to his latest stage of brilliance, Chittum skiffs!

Hal took me in as a runaway teen in the Keys back in the 80's. He let me stay at his home and gave me a job in the Islamorada store. He's one of the reasons I ended up in business as opposed to jail. First class guy!

When Hal opened his store in Islamorada, he made it a point to make sure all the guides/captains got a discount. It didn't matter if you were a young pup like me or a seasoned pro. He treated everyone with respect. He used to keep his skiff tied up at the Lorelei. It was called the "Bone Ranger" and it had a bonefish painted on it with a mask over its eyes. Thank you, Hal. And thank you Andy & Nicky for this great video series. Capt. RB.

I have to say that these interviews always have segments that bring to light information that previously had only been held by a very few. I believe these will stand the test of time to be truly a historical record of a time that has past. Fortunately now it will at least not be forgotten. Thank you.

Loved the Islamorada store. Advice from one of the guys, put me on my first permit. This conversation about skiff construction, was really enlightening. This conversation, like previous, validates how good the fishery was and what it has become. History that will never be repeated. It was a good time.

What an amazing group of story tellers! I love Hal’s pursuit of excellence. I have learned the same hard lesson that he describes about certain people you hire who do not share your passion to persevere through the stages of prototypes. I wouldn’t wish being a perfectionist on anyone. Cheers to you all for sharing this message! Drink up that @papapilar! It always goes down smooth!

Watching this made me think of Harry Spear and his boats that he's building. Any chance he'll be on the millhouse?

As usual, another awesome program. I’m an Northeast Florida fishing guy. Why won’t Homosassa be the same?
