Just one of many tornadoes to occur during this horrific outbreak. It was quite eery watching this beast emerge over the hill. Tried to track it as best we could, but Alabama is a challenging state to chase in. The intersection is routes 129 and 278.
Thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of this sad day.

On April 27th my son's 6th birthday and I saw this tornado I lived on 278 in Hamilton between Burleson church and burnt house rd looked out my front window and saw it across the street from us couple miles away. When your at that intersection you were lookin toward the direction my house was this thing took out a few mobile homes and a farm bout a mile down from us. I felt so bad for those people they were outside for weeks looking through the field across from where their houses used to be trying to collect as much of their things as they could but I couldn't help thinking if it would have came across the street a mile sooner that could be us or worse that me and my kids wouldn't be here today. I grew up in Michigan and all this happened the first year we moved to AL I wad terrified we also didn't have power or anything for a week. Thanks for posting this I didn't know if anyone got footage of it I had it on a memory card and I lost it:(

I survived the Hackleburg tornado. I remember this day very well. On this day it was my 2 year mark at pilgrims chicken. I remember getting ready to leave for work and last minute feeling like something was going to happen and it would be bad. And about 20 minutes later it hit

The Hackleburg tornado was horrific. Its overshadowed by others like Joplin unfortunately but it killed 72 on that day. Heartbreaking, glad you came through it okay.

A good vid given the circumstances. With sight distance so limited the risk of getting too close is immense and with our thick southern forests a weakened tree can fall on you without warning even after the storm has passed. So many tornadoes during the outbreak that many never got media coverage or a passing mention at best. Mr. Spann was the busiest man in the world and he couldn't possibly handle more than he did- he saves countless lives regardless. An outbreak like this will positively happen again but I hope not for a long, long time. Thanks for the footage as a permanent reminder of that day in Haleyville.

I don’t know how many were killed in halyville but 72 died in Phil Campbell and hacklburg and that was barely mentioned. I still get angry that so much attention was on Tuscaloosa and Birmingham. I live in Cullman and we had 5 that day. Only 1 was really mentioned

I live in Cullman, also. Sad that so many old historic houses were lost on highway 278 in east Cullman. Weather was scary that day! If you're ever in Cullman stop by Heritage Park and view the bent steel beam monument, evidence from the tornado that fateful day.

@southernladyish

Lol yup. There was a pretty good sized one touchdown close to where I live about a year or so ago. You can still see it’s path. It jumped around and eventually jumped into GA (we live about 10 min from the GA line) There’s a lot of them that never touchdown, or die off quick, or they jump. Where I live, we get more downbursts or microbursts than anything. I’ve watched roofs being blown off because of down busts. We had a beautiful healthy cedar tree, 2 healthy good sized pine trees get completely uprooted a few years ago bc of the down bursts during one storm. We had our shed roof that had posts stuck down in the ground about 7 ft deep come completely out of the ground and blown to the opposite side of our yard during that as well. Pretty crazy storm that night.

I was visiting Springfield, Missouri on May 22, 2011 when the Joplin EF5 tornado struck and we were under severe tornado warnings all day. I remember that was the day that I left and headed back home to Pittsburgh and there were tornado warnings through every state the entire way back home. We even had a few EF0 and EF1 tornadoes in our area, but no major damage. I remember watching the news while I was there and seeing the town just destroyed and thinking that I should've gone there and tried to help. I don't know how much help I would've been, but I regret not doing anything but running.

The tornado in Joplin was a surprise. The spotters in that area were barely on guard when it hit. I was monitoring them and they were as relaxed as I have ever heard them 20 minutes before it hit. Such a rough day in SWMO.

The risks that you two and the errors you made in location "no it went past" and then it swang into to view at the highway junctions and then trying to follow it on that curvy road with no visibility was breathtakingly unsafe. You guys are luck you were not killed. That tornado could have made a right turn and you would not have seen it. With the number of storms being generated, you could have easily been struck by another twister off to the side or behind you. I lived in Huntsville when I was younger and you cannot safely chase with all of those trees and curvy roads. The debris that fell on you was light, but it also could have been a whole tree! I have to say that the first 30 seconds with the moisture being visibly pulled up was pretty impressive, though

Chasing anywhere in the Southeast is dangerous at best. The terrain is very rugged, lots of hills, roads are curvy. and there are giant trees everywhere! I would not want to chase in Kentucky, Indiana, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina or Georgia. Mother Nature made that area to play "hide & seek". Mother Nature wins too many times if you're playing tornado hide & seek!
