The tillage demonstrations at the Half Century of Progress include many types of tractors. In this video we will take a look at the a custom built Allis-Chalmers WD Tandem Tractor working at the big the show. This video will cover the history of tandem paired tractors and how they evolved into todays 4wd tractors. Viewers will also see how the connected tractors are controlled by the drive tractor.

We had tandem set up close by us, front tractor was a JD 70, rear was a JD D. They were used to pull a large chisel plow in the 70s. I still have that hitch some where, as we ended up with the D. Had a set of pulleys and ropes to control the rear unit's hand clutch, was used for a good few years till replaced with a 4020. I've seen this Allis unit some years back at the In state fair antique tractor display, or one just like it. Also at that same display there was a WD with a 6 cyl engine from a Gleaner A, very neat conversion as most parts just bolted in.

My uncle built a AC tandem tractor in the 1950's. He rode the rear tractor and steered it with a hydraulic cylinder between the two tractors. Duals on all four. Another neighbor made one with an IH 400 diesel on the rear and a Super MTA on the front. You drove the MTA with the steering wheel like normal. Duals on all four. When you were getting stuck with the front tractor, the rear tractor would push you through the wet spot. Then, as the front tractor got on firm ground, it pulled the rear tractor out. As the front tractor lost rpms because of the pull, I would just take the TA out of high to low range. This worked great and I NERVER got stuck with it even in some swampy ground.

I've always seen these tandem tractors online and stuff. however, I thought most of them were bored collectors who wanted a project. I didn't realize this was a common thing that farmers did back in the day. Very cool.
@cdjhyoung
@cdjhyoung 3 года назад
I wouldn't call it a 'common' thing that farmers did. Some farmers took the other route of either transplanting a bigger engine in their existing tractor or adding horsepower by rebuilding the engine. Out our way we had farmers that added turbo chargers to Massey Ferguson tractors; LP gas injection to diesel Olivers; my dad upped the compression ratio on his Super W6 International to jack the power from 41 hp to about 60 hp. He did some other engine mods also at the time. The tandem tractors were just the most obvious to recognize ways to pull bigger equipment. I've always been surprised that most of these tandem rigs I've seen, in person or in videos, were two dissimilar tractors. The featured tractor here is the combination of a WC and WD instead of being a pair of either one. The idea of injecting LP gas into a diesel engine first appeared in the over the road trucking industry. In that application it was intended to add horsepower to get over a hill or mountain but wasn't intended to be applied full time. I had the local Oliver mechanic tell me one time about doing test installs of these devices in local tractors to try out the concept. Later, another friend mentioned that he had a senior college engineering job of tracking how these installation were working for Oliver. The mechanic told me that like all boys, farmers couldn't resist turning up the injection rates until they dynamited the engines. He also mentioned that it was pretty funny to get the call from the farmers about how the engine had 'failed' in the field when in reality the LP tank had run out and the farmer was back to the normal power settings. The 1950's saw a lot of innovative ideas applied to tractors both by farmers and the tractor makers themselves trying to get more power to pull bigger tillage tools. Those bigger tools also drove a big change in the look of farms as the smallish 5 to 10 acre pasture fields were expanded into larger fields more accommodating to bigger equipment.

Back in the late 70's, my neighbor had a U Minnie behind a UB Minnie and plowed with a 5-16 plow. He put the back tractor in gear, opened up the throttle and jumped on the front one. When he got ready to drop the plow in, he reached right behind him and pulled a lever that engaged the hand clutch on the back tractor. He said his brother made the mistake of trying to throttle down when he came to the end rows the first time, and the back tractor kept going at full throttle. The rig jack knifed and went threw the fence, threw the ditch and up to the edge of the road before he got the clutch released on the back tractor. Around the same time(1976-77), John Deere had a pair of 30 or 40 series tractors connected hydraulically and used to plant the river bottom ground at Norris Farms with a 24 row planter. They came out that fall with a 12 row head on what may have been an 8800 combine? This had to have been experimental because the 12 row head didn't come out till 79 with the 8820.

In the late 1960s, my neighbor used a Farmall M and a Minneapolis Moline set of tractors to pull a Graham-Hoehme. The only lever he had on the Moline was a manual clutch lever in case he needed to stop. I also noticed the Allis-Chalmers pair were operating in Third gear which is a little too fast and pretty hard on your equipment. It looks like you are getting it done but may not work for everyone.

WD in front and WC in rear. Spent many hours behind the "arm strong" steering of both of those. My father and I rebuilt our WD with a different cam and higher compression pistons with new sleeves, turned and rebalanced crank and all new bearings. It would pull the 3 - 14's in 3rd gear if you wanted.. Got the piston kit from good ole Tractor Supply. Should have put it on the dyno to see what it had hp wise. Easy pull a 10ft disc with spring tooth and crow foot roller. Always dualed with fluid in both. Wish I could find that tractor. Sold in NW Ohio in 79.

@1crazynordlander 3 года назад
You would think that hydraulic setup that sped the engine up and engaged the clutch would be hard on the engine's crankshaft thrust bearing and clutch throwout bearing. It appeared to disengage the dry clutch and not the transmission's wet clutch setup that AC tractors had. The greater amount of time you have that dry clutch disengaged the more pressure you are putting on that crankshaft thrust bearing and clutch throwout bearing.

Something different about the Allis Chalmers tractors was their final drive. The rear axle was carried higher than the middle of the rear wheel by an extra gear added at the end of the axle to make the tractor sit higher for more ground clearance while keeping the rear drive wheels smaller in diameter. Not sure why they would do this because they could have just made a larger diameter wheel in the rear rather than adding more drive hardware. If anyone knows why AC did this I would like to know. And, with two tractors the farmer had one more engine and transmission to maintain. Why not just make a larger tractor with more HP? Thanks in advance for letting me know the reasoning behind this manufacturing oddity.
