Professor Tom I use this a lot. That half guard position is where I play most of my game from. Great details in the man. I’ll make some adjustments to see if they work for me. Thank you to both of you for being such great teachers. 🥋🤙🏻

I worked this from memory at last nights open mat and just with the knee pointed towards the shoulder made a HUGE difference in my side guard defense. Keeping the elbow tight ..huge tip. Tjanks for the video!

I have been looking up half guard techniques because I'm missing my entire right leg. I used to wrestle before I lost my leg. Anyways.. lifelong MMA fan.. but recently discovered the beauty of BJJ...for every thing your opponent does there is a counter..BJJ is the art of killing people gently. Size, weight, missing limbs doesn't matter when it comes to BJJ.. Long story long...I got in my first bar fight tonight. I 100% believe I was defending myself, but I may be wrong. Yet I digress... The points he makes about framing from half guard, with the forearm across the throat and using your other arm as a base...was spot on. I have never taken a BJJ class but that framing with the arm across the throat was something I did out of instincts. I was able to reach up and snap his neck down and keep him from postering up and smashing my face in. I just held him there until it was broken up

I think I'd like to see Tom Deblass and Neil Mendlesson (probably a misspel) spar. I'd like to see the half guard battle. Thanks for the video, Bernardo!

Bernando please explain why you prefer putting your elbow outside of your knee in that position. Tom explains why he does his way in the video but you don;t mention about it in it. Thank you for your awesome videos as always.

fwiw, look at 2:20, where Tom subconsciously put the elbow outside which is the opposite of what he says he does. I've come to learn that if an athlete teaches something one way and does something in competition another way... always trust the way they do it over the way they teach it

I play half guard and the thing that bothers me about the shield is this defensive mode. So, if I got that straight, let the frame collapse for the undertook might be the solution. I will give this approach a try.

Instead of the classic "OK guys" start to a technique, Tom should say "Not for nothing." Anyone from NY/NJ/LI will understand.

This seems like a last resort move. Not something you would want to do just to do it. Really good fighters will collapse and look to pass the half guard...
