Having watched it thrice and therefore ~45 minutes, I've now watched almost as much of the last 15 minutes of this episode as I have all of NuTrek. It's so awful. People talk me into checking "the best" episode of some new series out and it's adults speaking like 14 year olds and bickering on bridge sets that don't look functional. At least Mike eating board game pieces makes sense in the RLM canon.
"Is it embarrassing that I know his name is Gowron?" No, it's embarrassing that you don't know his name is Kavok, just played by the same actor as Gowron. What a hack fraud!
So to the Trekkies out there, who was the character Mike didn't eat and put on the monitor for a bit?? Just curious... Think it's one of his favorites?
@@staceyann1180 not sure, but i think it’s Geordi LaForge. Looks like him and Geordi also features in RLM’s Star Trek: Galaxy Re-view. He also put a second figure there right before the phone rang and he threw the box over his shoulder at the end of the video, but i didn’t see which one that was.
Mike needs to make a history of Star Trek video, either as science man or Plinkett, where he just talks about the entire series from its very beginning to today and describe its ups, downs, prime, and death. As someone who has never seen a single piece of Star Trek media, I'd watch that in a heartbeat
Seeing Mike being genuinely happy and seeing the two discussing the movie and the unfortunate passings of both Nimoy and Yelchin in a sweet and tasteful manner really made me happy. I'm gonna watch it tonight.
youtube is autoplaying the star trek reviews in order but backwards from the review of "picard"... with every video going back in time i hear a little bit more of the hope that the new iterations of star wars and star trek have strangled to death
It really is hard to stomach the fact that the old shows/movies, which upheld the test of time as well crafted stories that were fun for all ages/generations, have truly become these romps “for children.” And I can’t even begin to describe my frustration with that argument. It really does bother me that most people see TOS/TNG/SW trilogy as the same kinds of media as the current ones that share their namesake when they’re essentially worlds apart, no pun intended.
A star trek movie like they said, the villian just wants to unite all species under one banner because his homeworld only recently became a part of the greater galaxy and was nearly wiped out. It's not that he dislikes the Federation, he just believes that if they have the resources to better other planets they should, which heavily goes against the Prime Directive. Then at the end, Kirk realises that the villain isnt that horrible, and that the device he has is actually going to save a world for annihilation so as the villain is dying, Kirk decides to trust him and doesn't stop the machine. The Federation is of course furious, but Kirk tells them he was simply too late to stop the device but he's also glad he didn't since a species is getting a second chance. The crew has his back and they continue on, swearing to hold to the Prime Directive as best as possible but also not forget the lesson that everyone deserves a second chance.
I adore these reviews because just like Mike I adore Star Trek. It's great being able to relate as he glazes over some of the more ridiculous but amazing plot lines from episodes. I completely agree that the ethical questions and dilemmas posed in the various series' are what make the show so great. Man, I love 'em. Always will.
He actually wrote the book Need Do Well (most celeb books are by ghost writers). I thought it was pretty good. I loved reading about how him and Frost and Wright got together.
Why cant they have a Star Trek villain who isn't "revenge man?" The show had plenty of examples of that. You could have a character whose ideals conflict with the philosophy of star fleet, that would challenge the views of Kirk on a deeper level, rather than on just a superficial "im gonna destroy earth" level. There could even be a level of respect between them, despite being adversaries. And you could still have massive battles and popcorn action as a backdrop to this.
Pegg tried that with the Section 31 McCarthyist admiral guy in _Into Darkness,_ but then Kurzmann and Abrams just couldn't resist the urge to unsuccessfully rip off _Wrath of Khan_ for the third time in 15 years.
I ain't never been the biggest Trek fan, but the OG Star Trek is awesome because of its campiness. That 60s scifi, with low budget special effects, is awesome to the max.
Is it embarrassing that I know they were trolling and the Klingon on the box is named Kavok? I may own two copies of the board game and made friends of mine play numerous times when I was a kid in the early 90's. And then in college. Which is when I needed a second copy. Because I ran out of communicator stickers and a few isolinear chips and crew pieces had been lost.
I skipped this one when it came out. I can't believe they liked it, I think I"m gonna go check it out. Also, i cried a little laughing at the impression of the villain with the friendship doomsday device.
@@DistractedGlobeGuy he acted as Superman, he plays warhammer 40k and is apparantely now showrunner for some upcoming 40k scifi shows. He is keeping the nerd fire strong
@@Dan-bv3mf _40K_ and _Superman_ are sci-fi in about the same capacity as _The Dark Crystal._ Maybe not Tolkien, but definitely fitting better under the high fantasy label.
As someone who played the TNG VCR board game as a kid I was very aggravated by Mike breaking the tricorder and eating the players. On the other hand, as a Wisconsinite, huge props to Jay for appreciating a New Glarus Spotted Cow.
Those first two films should Have been a big red flag saying AlexKurtzman SUCKS at the very least keep him away from Star Trek especially after seeing what could have been in this movie. It’s 2021 and kurtzman just signed some huge deal to continue with Star Trek. I feel like Im living in the mirror universe
I'm seeing the review 7 minutes after it's upload. I have so many people to thank. I want to thank my parents, and my third grade teacher, and my orthodontist
HEY to the defense of that Star trek episode where they visit the planet with the spores on it, Kirk specifically says rage will change their influenced minds. it wasn't just "hit him in the head with a pipe" it was more "piss him off so he almost kills me so he goes back to normal". I'm sorry
I'm bingewatching RLM-Star Trek reviews right now, and its fun how Mike points out EVERY SINGLE TIME that Kirk is actually a by-the-book-Captain and no stupid teenager. Level-headed and stuff. Yeah Mike, youre right, i get it. Also, i like Mike's love for Star Trek. I was actually WAITING for him to mention the nod to the Cpt. Archer-Enterprise. Well done.
I love the sabotage scene. It works because it’s actually in the show and all the characters have a mix of “what the actual hell?” and “hmm, I like this classical music.”
That Kirk v Spock fight from TOS is awesome. Brings back so many memories of watching people starting a fight with Kirk but then throwing a stuntman around for 2 minutes. Also: 36:46 Mike predicted Thanos.
While watching this (on work internet) video jars to a halt to buffer right after the sound-effect following "unlike Nicole Brown Simpson". Perfect pause.
One key thing these guys seemed to miss, when describing the characterization of Kirk in the previous two films, is that he has a pretty significant character arc from 2009 Trek to Beyond. He was brash and rash in the first film, which is more realistic than him being TOS Kirk fully formed from birth. His portrayal in Beyond showed how he *became* a great leader
Mike, you should take a look at Star Trek Attack Wing. It's a pretty neat Trek board game if you can find another basement-dwelling loser to play it with.
As long as the pieces are cardboard or paper, he'll be down to try it. Plastic gets stuck in his throat, so Jay needs to take him to the hospital some times.
Overall the best of the Kelvin movies for me, but here are my nitpicks. 1) The stupid motorcycle action scene. 2) The Franklin breaks free from being encased in solid rock then crashes through more solid rock formations as it flies around. 3) Why exactly did Krall need that stupid weapon? His swarm of drones seemed to be perfectly capable of destroying Yorktown without the need for some super weapon. 4) Why was Krall so angry in the first place? Because the Federation never found him after he was marooned on the planet? But he could have left any time he wanted with the army of ships he found on the planet. And he also became effectively immortal. It all seems like a pretty good deal to me.
In response to your last point. I assume he 'ate' his crew. Like, I can imagine the survivors drawing lots and he keeps not being chosen to be sacrificed over and over again even though he wants to be for the sake of his crew. Then, when there are only 3 left, another group of aliens crash and he consumes them. All of this before they figure out how to fly those alien ships. So it's a combination of survivors guilt and alien brain chemistry messing with his head that causes him to push all that self hatred onto the Federation for not saving them as opposed to hating himself. Admittedly it should have been said in the movie, and this is supposition on my part, but this is my head canon about it.
I'm curious to see how the series continues, they really made a step in the right direction with this one which is refreshing after watching the new Star Wars take off in a sprint in the wrong direction. Just in general it seems ironic how the tables are turning with Trek starting to outshine Star Wars, back when they both hit cinema with A New Hope and The Motion Picture Star Wars seemed leagues ahead in terms of entertainment.
