For anyone wondering for Jews they are a closed religion and its passed through the maternal line. So anyone with a Jewish mum is Jewish, but anyone with only a Jewish dad isn't considered Jewish unless they convert which if I remember properly is a long process.

@babyjeebies9871
@babyjeebies9871 Год назад
It depends on the sect because the original reason for this was the inability to prove who the father was which is an issue that is now easily fixed with a paternity test. Also, within the Torah itself it states that besides being born Jewish or converting you are also Jewish if you were raised Jewish. However, some sects are very very strict and only allow people born of a jewish mother and those who convert others are more lax and take into account these alternative methods

Why do Hasidic Jews stop you on the street? I don't have this experience, I'm curious why they do that, and what it has to do with seasons
@znuffyztruggles5744
@znuffyztruggles5744 Год назад
I must say I haven't done that much research on the topic and some of this is surmised. Hasidic jews are basically a very Conservative and closed group, only really talking to other hasidic jews. To try to grow their ranks, they go out on the street in these so called Mitzvah Campaigns where they would go on the streets, ask if you were jewish, and if you said yes they would try to encourage you to adopt their way of living. I myself personally see parallels with this and Jehovas Witnesses "service" (door knocking), I guess highly gated groups who want to bolster numbers operate the same i guess.
@Bella-bn2lq
@Bella-bn2lq Год назад
Judaism doesn’t require non Jews to keep most commandments, and the ones that do apply are pretty broad covered by most other religions/cultures so there is no need to encourage non Jews to follow Jewish laws. So they might stop a Jewish person and encourage them to be more observent, but wouldn’t want to do so if the person wasn’t Jewish. The time of year is probably referring to autumn, when the big Jewish holidays, which largely focus on repenting take place.
@whimsyrosie
@whimsyrosie Год назад
The holiday of Sukkot is coming up- which is, like Rosh Hashannah, a fall harvest holiday- and one of the traditions is to shake something called a lulav which is essentially some branches tied together with different types of leaves whose shapes are supposed to represent different body parts (eyes, lips, etc) and an etrog, which is a large bumpy lemon-like fruit that is supposed to represent the heart. You hold them together and shake it in different directions while saying a prayer. It is essentially supposed to remind you that Hashem (G-d) is all around you. It is considered a mitzvah to do so, but it is super annoying when some random guys stop you on the street to take time out of your day to do this one thing. Chasidic Jews, not all but many, are always trying to get other Jews to practice Judaism like they do and it isn't cool. Jewish people should be allowed to practice in the way they choose.

"No thank you" "Okay, have a nice day" And then let me go on my way. They never go that way, so I just say I'm not Jewish.

With modern technology there's not really a reason for this. It passed on by mother because historically there was no way to know 100% who a childs father was and they didn't want people raised jewish who weren't supposed to be but now we can just get a paternity test. It's a very outdated practice that really should be moved on from with how easy it is to test who the father is.

@babyjeebies9871
@babyjeebies9871 Год назад
@CrazyCavalier It's important and encouraged within Judaism to debate the true meanings of what god says and that's what I'm doing. If you truly believe that people have no right to debate about what's said in the Torah then you really aren't that bright. We only considered only matrilineal jews to be truly jewish because we could prove that they were born to a jewish parent. With modern technology we can now prove 100% that a patrilineal jew has a jewish parent and therefore should be considered jewish. The only matrilineal jews thing was simply to ensure that no one who didn't have a jewish parent would be raised jewish.

I'm sorry but what are hacidic jews? I looked it up but it just seems like they're Jewish people from western Ukraine and I'm not sure how that correlates to them asking ppl on the street if they're Jewish? Edit: I looked into it further and the reason they might be asking is to help unaffiliated Jewish people or jewish ppl who have lapsed in their faith return back into the community by mitzvot (good deeds). TL:DR they do this to ask jewish people not really connected to a Jewish community or to their faith a way back into a Jewish community. (Unless I'm misunderstanding this which I probably am and if a Jewish person can/wants to correct pls do) it seems like a sweet and ultimately kind gesture (albeit maybe annoying like every other practice that results in asking people on the street who might be in a hurry or don't wish to be talked to)
