I loved the "approaching the guy on the turret with the barrel" one. From Gordon's POV it's janky A.I. but once you see it from the Metrocop's POV it's more like the cop is going "wh-.. what the fuck? What are you doing?"
5:44 dude just imagine you're at your military job when a nerd scientist in orange armor comes flying into a piece of wood using mind power, that would be scary.
Now I realised why the combine freaks out after knowing he has returned - fighting him is beyond horror. His motives, actions and capabilities are beyond comprehension. He barely registers your attacks. His moves bring you a constant feeling of wtf, then suddenly he gazes on you and you die in the most bizzare way possible. It is as if you are fighting some Lovecraftian entity disguised as a nerd.
@wzlk we can give hl1 a pass since they were clearly in big limitation to their time, money and engine cyberpunk is in a better engine and somehow worse.
@@Oniri245 think they're referring to how hl1 is even more impressive relative to when it was made; the ai in that game has some impressive quirks and behaviours you don't see nowadays
tbf it's more of a testament to valve's level design imo. The ai is pretty good even for modern standards but it's nothing special - you can place the same soldiers in any gmod sandbox map and watch them hopelessly spray at you. All their flanking tactics, strategies, etc. are designed in conjunction and balance with HL2's nodes, and each structure and prop generally complements that
You, a Combine Soldier, finally manage to kill the legendary Gordon Freeman. You hardly believe you’ve done it but you see him there, limp and lifeless. Faintly hearing the voice coming from his suit go silent and it finally hits you, you did it. You’ve secured the fate of the Combine on Earth. You tense your face behind your mask, close your eyes and go to let out an audible glee from joy you don’t ever remember feeling before. But wait, you open your eyes, something feels different. You weren’t standing right here, you weren’t facing this way. This isn’t right, the call you hear coming over the radio was about Freeman, the same call you heard about two minutes ago. But he was dead right her- he’s gone, as well as any sign a gunfight ever took place. You pick up on the sound of a grenade from around the corner almost quick enough to see it bounce off the wall and at your feet. You close your eyes, but time doesn’t turn back this time.
7:00 . . . Can you imagine, you get assigned to some random ass middle of nowhere road blockade and suddenly out of the distance you see a man backwards bunny hopping going faster than most car. What is going through your head?
What if there was a community server with the entire game and you had hundreds of people roleplaying as the combine while a speedrunner tries to beat the game without dying?
This got to be one the greatest ideas a person has ever had. I wish I knew how to script so I could make a game or a mod with this same concept some day.
@@9s322 God, I hope someone turn this in to reality, I'd play the shit out of it I can't even fathom the kind of crazy youtube/mods content that would come of this.
Imagine the thoughts of the guy at 3:20. Now consider that at this point Gordon Freeman isn't even on their radar yet so none of them knows what an HEV suit is or that it can interface with their energy devices to replenish a type of energy shield. So you're on guard duty, normal day so far, and you see a man with glasses in an orange and black suit run up to you aiming a gun at your face. "Who the fuck is this guy!?" You fire a couple shots into the fool's chest, then feel a sharp pain as he returns fire. "WTF WTF!? He's still standing!" You limp back up the stairs and back up still shooting as you get away and he's still somehow not dead, and he walks up, just STANDING there, the bullets seemingly doing NOTHING AT ALL to him, for several seconds just taking it before he finishes you off.
@@dylanzlol7293 Yeah because he doesn't wear his helmet like an idiot, how did he even survive all the radiation he was around, or inside the atmosphere of Xen!?
7:50 I don't know if that was the combine gaining a sense of danger or the AI becoming sentient, but that was true fear coming from the combine if they ran into cover like that.
@@WTFBOOMDOOM NPCs in half life have some inteligence, they can evaluate the situation and take cover, is not always scripted behavior, is more visible in custom maps.
Its surprising how most of the time the AI movement seems quite advanced from this perspective, like there is a lot of logic to when the take cover, when they sidle to get a better shot around cover and how they move and shoot between cover etc.
@@Tyneras In fact the AI in pretty basic but the devs can place nodes to indicate all the actions possible and when to use them. Each possible cover, jump, flanc, and every other behavior are manually programmed. It make very good looking AI with a minimum CPU usage, but it mean the level-design is a harsh task, which explain why their is so many corridors that seem to waste the AI potential.
@@pierrotA Well it's part of the AI still. It was way before navmeshes were introduced, so in most engines designer should place nodes for AI to work properly. But even at basic level - without pathnodes - HL1 and HL2 AI is quite advanced and has a lot more reaction and actions, that depend on their state and player state, than most of modern games, especially from big studios.
@@Theeight8b I agree, it was way ahead of it's time. It's still very good AI by today standard. I was just saying that that system need a lot of work on level design, which explain why their is so many corridors. You cannot add a room full of furnitures and expect the AI to use them as cover or to flanc you. You have to manually set all the actions.
The fact that Gordon has a god-like perspective I understand why the combine don't react when they see gordon picking things up with his mind and flying around on a pallet
I wanna see someone try to beat this game with a mod installed that makes it to where you control Gordon but you can only see out of the eyes of the enemy
I have no idea how you did this but gosh dang is it funnier from their view. You see a guy who runs up to you, runs around, throws things, and still gets away with it. LMAO
I don't recall the exact console command but essentially they had to record all these clips FROM that view, which just makes the bhop and pallet surf all the more impressive.
This is done in gmod. There's a bunch of ways you can do it. Easiest one is NPC camera which also keeps it when they die so you see the ragdoll POV. You can also create a camera and parent it in the soldier's 'eyes'-attachment
Then he runs at you while you're shooting a freaking SMG at him and he just tanks them all because his HEV suit has energy shielding or something and just casually stands in your line of fire seemingly invincible.
This makes me want a pseudo-horror game where you play as the average NPC enemies, seeing through their helmet or body cameras, switching every time one dies, while a "player character" is just shredding through your forces with weird tricks and way too much health
9:08 "I wish I could say this was a pleasant surprise but its partly to blame for choice of career path! I only ask you could not have other humanities future" Insightful.
This is pretty cool, if you went balls to the wall with modding and editing this would be an incredible short horror story from the combine perspective.
Watching Gorden play Half life for the first time is something i thought would never be this funny. Watching him swing at man hacks is so fucking funny
@@V-95K You make me laugh, first, nazis kilo jewish people, look the nazi Empire in WWII, the holocaust, and the president of Ukraine is jewish. I thought that Putin was the only one who believed the lie of the Ukrainian Nazi president, but I see that there is more than one id10t
I think the job of these friends is the hardest in game worlds.Think about it, you're trying to stop someone who flies with a pallette, does bunny hop, and exhibits psychopathic behavior that I can't count yet.My respect for the combine grew even more.
3:05 "There was a time they cared nothing for civilians... When their only experience of humanity was a crowbar coming at them down a *concrete* corridor."
0:09 I almost inhaled my water from laughing, I actually used to throw stuff at The Combine back when I first played the game and have them chase me around to see how long I could last before they'd get me, particularly in the cafeteria after that one asshole knocks a can on the floor before letting us through, that guy really had it coming. Would keep throwing empty Chinese takeout containers and glass bottles running around the tables as long as possible just for that one guy. That one. Single. Civil Protection officer. Yeah, there's CP, soldiers, guards, and others working for The Combine who did far worse, but that can incident at the start was PERSONAL so I went out of my way to bother that guy as much as possible. Because just instantly killing them outright with blunt force trauma, gunfire, explosions, or buzzsaws launched with point-zero energy wasn't as satisfying as harassing that guy and making him chase me around for 30 minutes before escaping out into the streets XD Edit: I might have been getting the room with people in line waiting for packages and the cafeteria at the train station confused, so I guess I did this in both rooms.
It's kinda intense on how it looks like on the combines pov like them knocking down a door was pretty cool and then chasing Gordon Freeman looks like a real life chase.
Imagine your a combine soldier and you see a man in orange holding a crowbar. He charges at you completely unfazed by the hundreds of rounds piercing his body. Moments later one of your squad members fall to the floor lifeless. Then another and another and the last thing you see is a crowbar coming right at your head.
This looks so much like webcam footage, from the rollermine falling into the ocean to combines shooting at gordon. I still don't understand how a 20 year old engine holds up like this.
when they are fighting him in the sky i found it super interesting how the AI decided at the last second to chuck a nade directly straight into the air , presumably so it would blow mid air. interesting
Makes me wanna find a gamemode where you just play the normal HL2 campaign but random npcs are controlled by players. The next step up from hard mode is getting into a deathmatch-esc firefight every time I fight zombies, combine, or even antlions.
