This was actually the first of the campaign mods that I got to work in Garry's mod with my long running custom project for playing Half-Life 2.. It was also one of the easiest, with a minor learning curve of understanding that the Garry's mod community has no comprehension of anything not workshop related anymore.. lol.. sigh.. But that being said, all I had to do to get it to work was the traditional mounting OCD for Garry's mod, as well as append the particles and sound manifest in the core game files.. like it was genuinely fully functional in a way that most are not. I'm not really sure what's broken about it, as they released a patch a long time ago from what I understand? Like it's one of the very few campaign sets that actually got modern love.. also helping that in its final iteration it was one of the more up-to-date map sets put together, hitting the post orange box brutality for mods, and only having to work around the 2013 pipeline update? Honestly, the very first pipeline update completely changed my entire gaming trajectory, having broken every single one of the mod projects I have been crafting and messing with, right as the episodes were coming out.. and there was no way I was going to play vanilla Half-Life 2 gameplay after what I had gotten going lol.. 17 years later I started the Garry's mod project for myself to finally play those episodes, and it's just been kind of a thing up and messing with.. it's.. I wish there was a better way to get campaigns into Garry's mod smoothly... Or a better way to modify custom packaged Half-Life 2 campaign mods, if my understanding is correct, a lot of those updates are are the reasons why that process is so incredibly difficult.. and it's incredibly frustrating how steam handles its updates... One day in 2006, I connected my steam online for a brief minute, I don't know why I had it in offline mode... But I did... Making it even more of a brutal nightmare that would ensue as I only was going to connect it for a second to do something, and immediately half-life 2 started updating.. and would not let me play it without the update or roll it back.. They would take years for for any of the things to make any recovery, and by the time I stopped checking, they weren't.. although I'm happy to know that many of them did in their own way, or expand further, although a lot of them just ended up a standalones, like the s mod and it's various attempts.. taking advantage of older builds and whatnot. But back then I was young, a year was like 5 years nowadays.. and by 2009 I had just stopped looking all together, having spent a few weeks rabbit hole every so often.. It wasn't until overcharged came out, and I thought I had a one stop shop, and then realized everything in overcharged was the most unfunctional version of a thing of all of the old gameplay mods of past, put together in a way that almost neutralized its own capabilities on a one-to-one level lol.. So I figured it would be easy with the Garry's mod work that had been done and the LUA plug and play.. I think it took me about a year.. and by the time I played Half-Life 2 for the first time again I had played it about 20 times trying to get it to work all the way through lol. And then there was the episodes lol with.. some unique and incredibly stupid conundrums that our entirely because of the pipeline update systems, I'll be it fixable ones thankfully.. I agree about the very bespoke design of mission improbable, it was a really good test ground for getting a campaign to work, with the exception that it worked, which would not always be the case sadly. That being said, I would maybe hold less to the rigid best practices of valve as your guiding star for game design as if it were ideology lol.. it's not a bad guiding star but, it's not the only one... There should never be a never.. and sometimes you get a break a few refrigerators in order to not break some eggs, so you can then throw them kids that won't get off your lawn.. It's, it's a thing that eurojank is is often accredited to in the best of its ways when it is in the best of its ways.. Just as a core wellspring for interesting ideas in game design.. not every game has to be a half-life game or, or a valve game.. and Valve would probably have more games if that didn't have to be the case, along with all the other nonsense that goes on there lol. Just keep an open mind it's all.

I like to think that any mods that have Gordon is the playable character are things that happened after Ep2 (and technically HL:A) are just Gordon going on random adventures while he waits for HL3

The mod archives a lot of details with all that foliage. The broken cracked concrete and all these plants make sense for a place abandoned for about 20 years. The day time and light set's the right mood and together this makes for a great scene. One that HL2 is missing, due to the lack of vegetation. But I get it. It is decoration. NPCs can see you through it, while you can't. This usually creates unfair situations and frustration.

For what I see, this mod has an ambience that makes you curious and wanting to keep going to find out more about the enviroment. Also has what I feel are "Sunday vibes" with it's lighting.

12:10 color correction is actually quite easy to use once you learn it! all you need is to add -tools to the game's launch parameters, open it, type 'colorcorrectionui' into the console, and that's basically all you need to do. when you save the file (save it to materials/correction) it'll automatically create a .raw lookup table that you can just type into the color_correction entity's properties. every time you modify and save the color correction file ingame, the .raw LUT updates. (also, psa, make sure the color_correction entity's falloff is set to '-1' / everywhere. I spent way too much time trying to figure out why the CC wasn't applying until I realized that was the issue.)

Yeah that was my introduction to the color correction UI, definitely the byproduct of the consulitis at war on contrast principle which was really frustrating.. I didn't realize how much blur and fog was being done with actual fog for color.. Getting rid of the raw files altogether, just deleting them straight up helps a bit.. But then you got to go in and fine-tune the fog to not exist while also not really ruining everything in the background, which is a balance that is incredibly difficult from the compiled end... I can't remember if I got satisfaction on that but I made it better for sure.. Episode 2 was pretty bad that way as well.. It was such a weird transition going from the hyperClear game of Half-Life 2, and then episode 1 even, even with the bloom which looked good in my opinion, It was a very clear and crisp game.. once episode 2 rolls around, you look like you got Vaseline smeared on the screen and it's entirely based around color correction fog and these Lutz trying to make the game.. I don't get it lol.. like it don't look good lol.. and Half-Life 2 is fine with fog when it's being fog. I think the worst offender so far though was swelter, where I just gave up, I was able to fix a bunch of course just by ripping it out, but there was always this brutal fuzziness to everything. They also did the thing in Half-Life 2 when they added the HDR stuff, where you look up at the sky and the eclipse happens, but if you look into a dark place the world gets gamma-blasted.. I don't understand where the parameters are tolerances were for this but it's almost like they were trying to emulate poor camera controls, or bad transition glasses.. first time I saw it was in crisis.. and it was absolutely ridiculous. The balance for this is usually atrocious when it's noticeable, when it's not noticeable it's fine.. But it's usually noticeable in one way or another.. fortunately, half life 2 is from the era that treated its audience as adults, and you can set to mapping values to a hard value.. I usually have three bound, and that gets me through most things.. Just basically as soon as it looks like I'm having a stroke, I hit the button and suddenly I get my vision back lol.. Just recently started having to deal with that a lot in control, a game that basically took the gamma blast fog and the war on contrast to the most utmost extreme of which was just staggering how bad it was.. thank God for reshade I guess.. But even then lol there's only so much you can do and it's it's a process lol cuz you're basically having to.. it's like untangling braided line from a fishing snarl, that was snarled intentionally in an overcomplicated way lol.

When most people think of the Combine in the context of a Half Life 2 mod, they think words like: "Present, now, threat, active." Just about everything that precludes the idea of nature taking over long-term. Makes sense like as not for the Combine to have abandoned old non-Humanoid weapons sites and other war constructs from the seven hour war, those would definitely get overgrowth if the Combine found no reason to salvage the parts.

I usually assume all these mods where you play as Gordon in some nebulous timeframe are set after Episode 2, like he's doing a bunch of side quest stuff to keep busy while the rebels get the fuel and aircraft ready for the trip to the arctic.

8:51 The reason i would find that area specifically very interesting and beautiful is just specifically because of the wear and tear of the roads. The grass that has overgrown half way. Nature reclaiming the once used to be bustling highway. It shows that the world is in disrepair, and that a lot has been abandoned outside of the cities that the Combine erected. Its world building that almost no mods do in most half life 2 games. Example, swelter? That game really puts the emphasis on how the world was in disrepair and abandoned after the 7 hour war, and it was left like that ever since.

Even using my brain I first arrived to an idea that some wiring outside must be cut and I need to leave the building and check to remove it, not that electricity upstairs is somehow connected to a flooded basement.

Jump faster! Jump crouch harder! Event trigger better gooder? I agree 100% about the way he talks about the backtracking though.. every backtrack moment in this game in that first section, is a better feature as the first time you went through the area.. I don't agree with how rigid he seems to look at design elements, and that's that's certainly his preference but there are definitely other ways lol and that kind of thinking kind of leads to some really boring design principles in a very very potential medium that hasn't scratched the surface in its decades of stagnation. There's definitely some irony to the run think shoot live statement for a game as curated and on rails as both Half-Life and half-life 2, You're actually not supposed to think.. you supposed to think that you're thinking lol.. which is always been one of the issues I've had, not because it's not a way to go so much as it's a really limiting design principle for what could be in a virtual world and virtual interaction that has kind of put them in some interesting spots.. although one of them ironically was to go to VR, it also let that version of vr stop short of it's potential and immersion at the behest of that.. But it also led to a full overview of thinking on a different level in game design on a count of the automatic recognition of a human using real world muscle memory and cognition I would argue that you didn't need to go to VR to see a large amount of that in games and many games had these things and we're progressing in that direction before the domination of the consoles for game design and the 20-year Time Warp we've been in with the dual analog controller.. But given how much games have to play themselves to deal with that limitation in it of itself.. I could see how they thought this was the only way to actually get outside of that.. because they're 2D gameplays at its most basic in its most basic basics... And they thought that was necessary.. which is sad.

First time experiencing this mod for me was on Gmod. Was no-clipping around and used the beaches for some dramatic poses, got to experience it actually *working* with the scripted events and intro quite some time later. A lot of the first level reminded me of the Dark Messiah level design with the massive vertical cliffs. The brush work you mention being noticed was a big part of that as well. Given your affinity for the rainbow map later- I would be VERY curious to hear your thoughts about the Dear Esther maps as well. The tonal difference is obviously, but the maps are absolutely Gorgeous.

Ive actually attempted to take down the chopper in ep2 with rockets i had to refill the rpg using the console like 10 times to take it down and i maybe missed a total of 3 shots at most holy frick you dont realise how useful that pulse cannon is until you dont have it

You should do a video on overcharged if you haven't already the reason being that many people think it was bad but in reality it achieved quite a few things that even base hl2 couldnt. For context half life and it's sequels are known as weapon sand boxes using any variety/combination of weapons to get the job done and hl2: overcharged improved this in hl2 immensely adding weapons and content from previous games and the beta making hl2 more of what it is a weapon sandbox after I played it I didn't understand why so many people hated it especially now it's been fixed and also fixed many bugs from base hl2 notably THAT BUG(the one from near the start water hazard where when falling in the wrong spot you would be screwed) so I think you should do a video on it honestly it's a great hl2 mod and does everything it set out to do and fully lives up to what it set out to do and then some it deserves more praise imo

I love this mod, it's a shame the modder hasn't made any newer stuff. It not fitting into the canonicity is something I can handwave. It's very much something that naturally extends HL2's lifetime.

I've played this mod on Garry's mod and it works really well! No crashes and the custom voice lines work! And I can agree with you that this mod is really great and I loved playing it! (I would come back to it playing with different mods to have different experiences with it!)

I know engines like unreal have more realistic physics and all that but the source physics still hella impressive, i First played thought hl2 some months Ago and got insanily surprized with How good It was (note, i haven't played modern games because i play on a Samsung laptop) and still is Really good to me to this day, playing some other games from the time like Doom 3 in particular you can Really see How beyond their time the source physics was, It only seems "janky" because we got used to more complex physics from modern engines

There is one thing about level design, as well as game design one must avoid is leaving a player frustrated, making labyrinthine style levels is not great, it does not invoke challenge but more so annoyance. And if your design has "the player just needs to know to pop a squat and eat a taco on this very specific rock" to progress, its not great. Unless your name is Alice and in wonderland then I can accept that.

I think handholding in of itself is fine but there's quite a difference between the subtle suggestion and prod in the back, and - the constant firm grip handholding that the player obviously notices. Even enemies spawning in the direction you're meant to go in is a form of handholding but it's one that also presents a threat.

I'm not gonna lie, I credit half life's take on map design when it comes to story telling in my dnd games. sure, the bigger plots is something I written down or tell the group. but whenever I wanna tell a story about the environment. I make little props and scenes in the maps to make sure the group would see it as something lived in. rather than just a map they are in. it also helps with me telling them where they should be going, or should be doing. without having to give them hints.

I don't know why but I get a lot of vibes from Metro Exodus' level The Taiga. I dunno, the forest at sunset, the vertigo and cliffs, the abandoned houses, it really reminds of that level and I love that.

Just a heads up that the creator of this map got a full-time job at Valve and still works there. He has done a few CS2 maps and I believe worked on Half-Life Alyx.

The only way I could make this mod somewhat canon is that G-Man just puts situations in Gordon’s mind in stasis to get him more prepared for what he’s gonna be put through 20 years later.

For those who want some kind of way to fit mods like this into their headcanon for the timeline, here's an easy catch all: "Gordon experienced it in a dream while the G-Man was holding him in stasis between HL1 and HL2, and then forgot it after keeping only his muscle memory". This way, you can think of it as muscle memory training the G-Man put him through in preparation for the events of HL2, explaining why Gordon was able to survive as well as he did under such harsh circumstances.

I think it would be awesome if one day, you checked out From Earth. It's a fairly obscure source mod that really deserves more time in the limelight imo with what it set out to do. I don't want to say too much about what it is, since it's absolutely best experienced blind. All I'll say is it set out to make an alien world, and imo, it succeeded.

i will say, in terms of mapping beauty, nothing tops Cinematic Mod. i don't care about canonicity in a mod, so i'm not bothered by a plane taking up more geometric real estate in an area where it doesn't matter to gameplay.

Went in looking for a cool and unique mod for HL2, left cause of excessive glazing of basic environmental level guided designed which was common even in HL1 and excessive glazing of physics which are at the level of Painkiller 1.

As a person who hasn't played the mod(yet), I wounder if the creator of the mod made the player Gordon because he wanted you to interact with the rebels in the rebel base? Not having the ability to, or the friends that could voice act, or the funds to hire a professional voice actor that could deliver work at the quality the mod is clearly operating on, it would make sense to use HL2's base citizen/rebel voice lines. And those reference Gordon specifically. So to make that scene make sense, he made the player Gordon.

@@lost_persona oh…. sorry you found out this way lol Nah but in all seriousness, you most likely also just have a slight red green colorblindness, it’s actually incredibly common, and it mostly just involves having a hard time differentiating certain red and green tones when they‘re right next to eachother :P

Although at the time of making it didn't make any sense, now that HL: Alyx altered the future and Gordon Freeman isn't the "main character" anymore, there is no issue with his story being a bit different. Obviously the creator of this mod predicted all this years before VR even existed...
