Half square triangles became so much easier for me after using trim tools.
Are some half square trim tools better than others?

I’m a fan of the perfect slotted trimmer. It works far better than any other ruler. But never forget: First you cut, then you iron.

Hi Fallon! I wanted to suggest that You can trim with the slotted trimmer upside down and then your cutter is in the best position to trim your dog ears without damaging your blade!

I finally decided to buy the Clearly Perfect Slotted Trimmer about a month ago. I'm actually sorry that I spent the money on it. Problems for me: my squares are usually a little smaller than the size I cut for, and the dog ears aren't always cut to the corner so I end up trimming them again. Thanks for the review of the 2 trimmers. I do like the squares outlined on the Tucker Trimmer, but I think I'll stick to using the square rulers that I already have in my stash. From others comments below mine, I think I need to check out Deb Tucker's other rulers that I don't have. 😊

I struggled with the size too. I think it works quicker than other rulers I have used, but it isnt as accurate.

Deb Tucker also has a great RU-vid channel with demo videos showing all her rulers and additional uses. I really like them.

I love that the rulers have links to demos. Sometimes it helps to see them in use.

Yes, Deb Tucker's rulers/templates are fabulous -- especially for the times you need the two diagonal lines.

I haven’t tried the Tucker tool yet, but thanks for the demonstration. I'm new to quilting and learning to make the HST and I was searching how to trim them.

I mean you could use the tucker trimmer before pressing your seams open by lining up the diagonal line on the sewing line. Then you can rotate the ruler to cut into the seam allowance so that the dog ears come off. I have the slotted ruler and it always feels really awkward to use it because of the angle that you have to hold the rotary cutter at to do the four different cuts which just doesn't really feel safe to me. As you say the rotary cutter catches on the slots of the slotted ruler and keeping fingers out of the way is essential.

Yes. I admit I usually don’t use those dog ear trimmer bits because they’re awkward

@@sewbeitquilts I ordered the Tucker trimmer. I think I prefer to square it after I press the seam open

Hi Fallon. I have both of these tools. I have yet to use them but you have sold me on the Tucker. I'm going to use it instead of the other ones. Thank you for all your hard work putting these videos together, you are the best!

I've tried both and by far I prefer the Tucker Trimer. I have quite a number of Studio 180 rulers - love them all, especially the V Block, Rapid Fire Lemoyne Star and the Wedge Star - lots of trimming but perfect blocks.

Hi Fallon. Great video. I love the in depth review on each of the two trimmers, what you liked and didnt like. The slots for the dog ears is great but i am with you that it may be wearing down your blades quicker and those things arent cheap.

Hey Fallon🙂 Thank you for this great demonstration! I have never seen the Tucker trimmer tool before. I currently use the clearly perfect slotted trimmers I like them they've made squaring HST's much faster😉 but yes I agree with you about the instructions. I'm definitely considering giving the Tucker trimmer tool a try. I especially like that it offers multiple uses(I'm always a fan of that🙂) As always thank you for sharing

I like the Clearly Perfect Slotted Trimmer, but I recently used an AccuQuilt HST die that was for the size I needed in my quilt. I usually only use strip dies, but the HST die came with my cutter. It was a game changer for me and I had so much fun sewing and trimming them. I may have to invest in more of the dies.

Yes, I love using the Accuquilt too if I have the right size die cutter.

I haven’t tried the Tucker tool but that was a great demonstration. I can see the value in having both, although I’m a big fan if the Clearly Perfect Slotted Trimmers. It is a pain having two separate templates to keep track of though.

Great comparison. I would never purchase the Clearly Perfect Slotted Trimmer set, I've seen too many people with the same problem, the edges are easy to break because of the design of the slots on the edges. I would purchase the Tucker Trimmer for that reason and the fact that it is one tool. But I own and love the Quilt In A Day - Eleanor Burns, "Triangle Square Up" rulers (3 Sizes available) . Sizes: 1 1/2" - 4 1/2", 1 1/2" - 6 1/2" and 1 1/2" - 9 1/2". Design wise they are much like the Tucker Trimmer, with the half and whole sizes on opposite sides of the ruler. The Quilt In A Day ruler, you have two options of trimming your squares either close or open.

I have heard that the Quilt In A Day rulers are lovely! I havent purchased them yet but plan to.

Thanks Fallon. I don’t use either, but I think I’d prefer the Tucker. I wonder too if those slits on the slotted one would be easier if using a narrower rotary cutter. I see the plus re the Tucker is one extra squaring up tool. Xx🇦🇺

I'm somewhat new to sewing and after watching this I have a question. Is the tucker ruler redundant if a person already has square rulers? Does it do something else that may make it worthwhile? Read on to understand what prompted this question if interested. I have square Omni Grid rulers already and have used them to square up half square triangles the same way demonstrated on the Tucker ruler here. One difference I noticed is with the regular square ruler had I have I can measure a whole or half number from the same end and didn’t have to be concerned with flipping it around. I watched this video because I'm interested in the clearly perfect ruler. Although other may prefer it, I found using a square ruler to be inefficient. I kept thinking there has to be another way. A while back I watched a video and saw someone use the Clearly Perfect ruler seems to speed up the process. From this video, I did take note that ironing after is to be done with more care as a trade off. Anyway, I questioned, would there be any advantage to getting the tucker ruler if you already have square rulers with a diagonal line? Does it do something else that might make it worth it, of would it just be redundant?
@sewbeitquilts
@sewbeitquilts 11 месяцев назад
I think this would be the same as your square ruler with the diagonal line. It sounds like they work in the same way. My square rulers from Arteza do not have diagonal lines from corner to corner so it made it really hard to square half square triangles without a trim tool.

I just bought these and they look easy to use. I tried a bloc lock ruler and couldn’t figure it out. So here we go I hope it works out. Don’t like the Tucker. Takes more work and seems more complex.
