Cable cars were invented in San Francisco. Now, on their 150th birthday, San Francisco is the only city that still has them. Fires, earthquakes and politics tried to destroy the cable cars countless times, but they've become a major source of pride for San Francisco, and more recently, a symbol of what's still right in a city that's faced harsh criticism for its struggling downtown.
