Why braid to mono to the swivel and not braid straight to the swivel?
@MooMooOutdoors

I like having a stretchy line and/or slow action rod when trolling for halibut. And for abrasion resistance. Braided line breaks easily when rubbed against rock and reefs when in the Ocean. trolling for halibut.

Usually if the snell knot is loosening, it was not tighten enough. After a while you develop a feel for it and know how tight you tie the snell knot.

Great video - thank you for posting. All your vids are fun to watch. Would you run the same rig setup (except end tie the single hook and ditch the treble) if you were using live anchovies instead of dead bait? I'm wondering if you would still use the bead chain and all the other stuff and troll the same way. Thanks again.
@MooMooOutdoors
@MooMooOutdoors 3 года назад
It will depend on the size of the live bait. When I'm using a small live bait like an anchovy, I use a single J-hook and nose hook the bait. When I'm using a big live jack smelt, I use the same rig and hook the treble at the tail. Yes, I still use the bead chain for live bait and troll like I'm trolling a dead bait some times.

Great video Moomoo! Can you use a barrel swivel instead of the bead chain swivel? What is the advantage of the bead chain swivel over the barrel?
@MooMooOutdoors
@MooMooOutdoors 2 года назад
A lot of times barrel swivel can't keep up with all the spinning and the leader line gets twisted. Bead chain or chain swivel prevents from the leader line getting twisted.

Lol, fifty pound… my leader is heavier than that… but I’m hunting Pacific Halibut (up to 500 pounds); you’re going after California Halibut (actually a flounder and only up to around 30 pounds). Come up to Alaska, nothing like hooking into a 100 pound halibut and fighting that monster, you’ll love it! I use either a 1 pound weighted halibut jig head, or a setup consisting of a circle hook on 3 feet of leader and a weight of 1 to 3 pounds on 12 to 18 inches of leader (lighter than the leader to the hook), both separated by a halibut spreader bar… six foot ugly stick and a big penn reel with about 1000 feet of line. For bait I stop at the dock. I reach down into the water and grab a small clump of tube worms off the side of the dock, I cut open the tubes, and cut the worms into half inch chunks and put those on a size eight hook with a light split shot six inches up the leader… I jig that by the dock to catch the little surf perch hanging out there, throw a couple dozen in the bucket and then use them two or three at a time on the hook between 5 and fifteen feet off the bottom (five if I want to also catch rockfish, fifteen if I don’t want any rockfish). I haven’t in the past, but I want to start catching squid and use chunks of squid added on to the hook with only 2 perch, everyone says halibut love squid, no reason not to take advantage of another “free” bait source (I have to pay a ton for the boat, the gear, and the gas; I feel it’s silly to pay for bait, too)… besides, my property is off grid two hours from town, why would I go all the way to town to buy bait that I can catch close by, and in the case of the surf perch, before I even get on the boat… Oh, and before coming to Alaska to fish for pacific halibut you need to do some soul searching, because lots of fishermen (myself included) grow bored with fishing anywhere else after catching monster halibuts and big salmon in Alaska, where you can have your crab or shrimp pot soaking while catching monsters, then the next day dive for scallops and abalone, and on the third day hunt Sitka deer, elk, moose, etc….. it’s paradise, but afterwards most everyplace else isn’t worth wasting the time dropping lines in the water…. Nice video. Tight lines!

Nice strait forward Video. Fish a very similar rig up here in AK. MOO MOO has it right this is a effective set up. To many people think that halibut are trash food eaters. Not true in the least they are true predators. We have caught them up here with whole king salmon in their bellies. Halibut swim and hide next to the bottom. Even if they are not hungry they are always looking up. so if your bait is within 10' of the bottom they can see it and small it. Keep educating Young Man. Hats off to ya!

I just found your channel. Great video. Do you that same setup when using live anchovies? I fished with a friend about two weeks ago. His setup only used a hook (smaller than what you suggest) through the nose. No stinger. I am going you try your setup when we go again. The anchovies seem pretty fragile, and I was wondering if your larger hook and stinger kills the bait. I have heard some people don’t hook the stinger into the fish. Thanks again for the informative video! I am now subscribed.
@MooMooOutdoors

Yeah this stinger is little too big for live anchovy drifting but great for jack smelt or shiner perch. I just nose hook the live anchovy when I do have them.

Its interesting to see the rigging going down the coast. We go a bit heavier in Oregon (Pacific City) which isnt as big as they seem to use in Puget, which is yet smaller than AK. We also tend to go lighter on the weight line so it breaks off 1st, but not using a lure with bait I don't suppose it matter much (cost) Love the knots. I'm going to give a lighter setup a try and see how it works out. I'm also going to look at your foam on the rod tech, I have mine corded but that limits where I can go on my Tandem Island. I hope to fish the Oregon Coast one day. I love exploring new areas. Yeah I'm not a fan of rod leash. They tend to get in the way of things and might get tangled with I flip. With your TI, you won't have to worry about flipping 😁😁.

Is there a big difference between using a treble or single hook for the stinger? I hate using trebles on a kayak they're a pain to deal with.

I want to say you get much better hookup ratio especially because halibut chomp the bait rather than gulp.

The first finger halibut bite marks tells me your doing well on some big halibut. Great set up, only difference for us is that we bounce ball B-2 squid lures rather than bait. The B-2 lures also work on White Seabass which are feeding on the same squid balls with the halibut.

Still learning how to fish but is this rig only helpful for halibut if you are on a kayak or can you also use it for fishing from the pier?

This rig is for trolling from a kayak or a boat. From the pier, you can use Carolina Rig or Drop Shot Rig.

@jeffreyharley1480

Btw, Moo moo. I really enjoy your channel. We typically fish the mouth area of San Diego bay with swim bait on Jig Heads. We catch spotties, sandys, calico, sculpin, and a few keeper Hali. Now I’m going to specifically target Hali, in some of the flats where we have hooked halis on jig heads. But, now I’m going to use your bounce rig with live sardines. Yesterday I spent a few hours tying up the rigs. I always manage to snag something on the bottom, so I’m going to run 30# braid main, with about 12’ of 25# flouro, and the rig will be 15# flouro. That way I get the advantage of the braid main which I like, the invisibility of the 12’ of flouro, and the lighter leader. So, if/when I snag, I can break off the offending leader part and easily replace it. Going out this Monday…as it is supposed to be a moderate incoming tide to drift the boat. Fingers crossed..I’m hungry for fresh halibut.
@MooMooOutdoors
@MooMooOutdoors Год назад
How did it go? Did you try the rig?
@jeffreyharley1480
@jeffreyharley1480 Год назад
@@MooMooOutdoors …Thanks for replying. I really enjoy your videos, and they are very informative. We used the rig at the mouth of San Diego bay today ( 5/2).We had several light to moderate hits that put large wide spaced teeth marks in the bait (6 to 9” live sardines). And I had one huge hook up. It was the strongest fish I’ve had in a long time, other than when I recently caught a seal. I knew it was a Hali, based upon the behavior. I let him take line, and was starting to gain on him…then “bang”!! I think his teeth cut the line at the first hook. I run a main of 30# braid, to a 25# flouro topper, and the rig was 15# flouro. I do the 15# to make it easier to break away from a snag. But, I’m afraid it cost me a big personal best. I don’t think it broke because of force, but likely from Hali teeth. I did catch 3 large sand bass, and along the jetty some calis. One thing though..I had trouble with the line to the hooks tangling. Any hints on how to avoid that?
@MooMooOutdoors
@MooMooOutdoors Год назад
@@jeffreyharley1480 Yeah, halibut are toothy fish. Sometime I notice my line frayed after one fish and I switch the leader. As far as the tangle, reel it in slow when checking or changing the bait, make sure the bait is not spinning too fast because sometimes even the bead chain cannot keep up, and avoid making tight turns and make wide turns and keep the bait suspended by keep moving.

What weight size do you use when fishing around yetties? I’ve fished with 6 oz torpedo and it seems like it floating and not hitting the bottom. I’m new at kayaking and any advise will be appreciated. Thank you
@MooMooOutdoors
@MooMooOutdoors 4 года назад
I use 12 oz when bouncing with fast current like in the bay and 8 oz in the ocean. You can get away with 6 oz but you'll have to let a lot more line out which I don't like to do.

@@MooMooOutdoors be safe as well. I ended up landing a shaker halibut, a 23” halibut, a 5lb striper, and we missed my biggest halibut at the boat. We hooked into 8 halibut, a striper and two bat rays, one ray was 48 lbs. The 2 hot rods had a 6” sling blade chrome/uv blue, and chrome/green herring dodger. A 20.5” leader from main line swivel to sling blade, a 19.5” leader from dodger to a sliding snell with a treble stinger. We used tray herring and live shiner perch. I assume the weight is supposed to hit the ground and troll the bait just above ground level? If so how do you detect that you have it the ground? I always have hard time with this trolling. Got that same rod now as well btw.... yet to catch a fish on it though. Stripers have been playing hard to get.
@MooMooOutdoors
@MooMooOutdoors 4 года назад
Yes keep the weight on the bottom. This is commonly called "bounce ball" rig. You literally bounds your weight on the bottom as you troll and you can tell it by tip of your rod. If your rod tip is not moving, you are most likely not on the bottom.
