Athboy and the people of the town are the stars of this opening sequence for ‘Hall’s Pictorial Weekly’.
In the Meath town of Athboy people go about their daily business. A postman cycles past on his rounds, a petrol pump attendant attends a customer at O’Connor’s Bar and Lounge, and some children have fun with an old pram frame using it as a go-kart.
Once a week from June to September, the ‘Hall’s Pictorial Weekly’ film crew would arrive at a town or village in any county in Ireland. They would film the people and the place and return to RTÉ where the footage was edited and put to music.
This short film of around one minute’s duration formed part of the opening sequence for that week’s episode of ‘Hall’s Pictorial Weekly’. As it was not advertised as part of the programme billings in the RTÉ Guide or newspapers, people watched in the hope their town or village would have its moment of fame.
This episode of ‘Hall’s Pictorial Weekly’ was broadcast on 7 March 1974.

Your honour, this is all the proof we needed as it was recorded on film on this very special day in Athboy, Co. Meath, Ireland 1974 ,The smiling postman as he makes his getaway on his bicycle after robbing the post office, the 3 models showing of the latest in fashionable coats, topping up at the past petrol pump for 785 miles, the newly imported Honda scooter drives by watched very carefully by 2 plain close undercover detectives, watching out for vehicles with out of date tax discs and false number plates, nothing goes to waste as those 3 young F1 drives try out this striped down fast driving machine which lotus co later copied ideas from of how to build the lightest and fastest road going car, a busy town with no traffic lights, an old lady heading for the betting shop to lay down her last shilling on the hot favourite running a in the last race at Fairyhouse, a child wanders down the road full of parked cars with not a traffic warden in sight,. It was just another fine day in the life of Hall’s Pictorial Weekly.

Hall’s Pictorial Weekly in Athboy, Co. Meath, Ireland 1974. 31.7.24. 2318pm .....lest we forget muckfaced Raymond who enjoyed to alight in the homesteads of those he despised (ie: those who had confused him) to grub and rummage about their home...at times tearful, at times irate....overalls thrown over the bin, an unfortunate prelate's wife coming home to discover, aghast!!, that muckface had tried on a couple of her frocks. though, without fail, his inchoate visits were so's he could dish ap a few swarms of fleas. his insane party trick for those who'd dared stick out the washing...facilitated, as he is, by Jacko the Garda....
