Player bans should be handed down. Integrity is at risk. MLB failed to uphold the integrity of the sport in the weak punishment handed down. What Pete Rose did was nothing in comparison.
Blank Frost It’s literally always been that way. Talk all the smack you want about Europe, but it’s sports governing bodies are 100x better than the treacherous US sports bodies like the NFL and MLB. In Europe MAJOR sports clubs are handed heavy punishments routinely depending on the crime. In the US it’s literally always a slap on the wrist. A real punishment would be something where the fans feel it as well, and therefore then direct their heat towards the management. So in this case it would have been either stripping the title from Houston, or banning the Astros from post season for 1 or 2 seasons. Disgraceful and weak. Cheating pays off in USA I guess. That’s the lesson our kids will learn.
Jon J I feel that if the Houston Astros get to keep their trophy and rings by stealing signs as a team, then Pete Rose should be given his place in the Hall Of Fame. He didn't cheat on the field to win and be successful. He played hard and relentlessly to win!
Only Complaint of Jonny Bench is that the Did Not Give the Same "pass" or 2nd Chance to his own team mate, Pete Rose, that he give to Jim Crane, owner of the Astros.
man I would luv to hear those stories. the red machine! total respect for those real baseball players. Despite a being Dodger fan, just miss old time players.
I can't believe Bench only made 2.2 mil his whole career. That just shows you the ridiculous amount of money these guys get today. Bench is such a cool guy to listen to. I wish him well.
Bench was a great catcher and team leader. IMHO, the best catcher ever. He was great with pitchers... You couldn't run on him. His presence alone would shut down the run game... If you did run? Had a cannon that would gun you down from the squat position... Hit for average and power... Then he got sawed open when he had lung surgery. Never the same after that, but still was the best in the game. Scary how much better he would have been. Mondo respect for Bench.
I don't know if Johnny was the best catcher, but with his arm, being a master of the short-hop/glove, his bat..but most of all his on field presence... he was most definitely my favorite player. Now Campy was before my time so it's hard to compare these two...The great ones always want to be the guy at the plate when a hit is needed, and that's not for any other reason, than they don't trust anyone else to come through... more than themselves.....thx, guys for bringing him on...
Most baseball experts have said Mike Piazza might've been the best hitting catcher, and Ivan Rodriguez was probably the best defensive catcher, but Bench was the best all around catcher. In fact, when people make their All History teams, where they pick a player at each position, Bench might be the highest consensus choice at any position on the field.
Lifetime bans starting with Altuve or else its going to be unbearable for all Astro players when not at home. The fans will not forgive nor forget. Has anyone ask how the Houston fans feel about it?
Even teams that didn't make the post season that played them if I was a team in the AL how do you know they weren't doing this in the regular season against you
Yeah, Rose was stupid and arrogant, and he has PAID for over 30 years now, and that will not likely end until his death. Now, that said, please tell me HOW cheating against the other team compares with that?
Johnny Bench is the best he knows the deal... love this guy ... listen to this guy... I used to see him in the 70s at Wrigley field... great person.. he has a great perspective on people that cheat.
Fred Wright Well, Houston is the 4th largest city in the country, so it’s not exactly Cincinnati or Pittsburgh. That’s a pretty big fan base & TV market..
Bench got divorced and his ex was asked about being married to the greatest catcher to ever play. She said "Johnny Bench may have been a Hall of Fame catcher but in the bedroom he was a minor leaguer.
STOP feeling bad for anyone who continues the bs that title isn't forever stained & cheating didn't help them smh. Farthest thing fom the best thing for baseball to sweep this under the carpet! Total bs! NOBODY buys they ignored the warning but just quit after winning WS ugh! Stop the nonsense, false analogies, & excuses!
MLB, my favorite pasttime, continues to humiliate itself by its allowing Houston to skate the punishment their actions demand: vacate the WS and banishment of players for one year without pay. The Red Sox need to vacate 2018 WS also. The bleatings of every shill MLB reporter, the pathetic avoiding nonsense of the guilty parties is embarrassing to fans.
The fans and the media need to keep demanding the truth about 2018 and 2019 and the buzzers. We deserve to know the truth. MLB and the Astros are trying like hell to sweep this under the rug, but there's a lot more that has yet to come out.
@oliverthecat666 - Duh...I get that. But there's a huge problem with that. The resolution they came up with was totally bullshit. Neither the players nor the fans are accepting it. Not even close. They've created MORE problems. Now, EVERYBODY is pissed.
If someone is on second base and is so-called "stealing" sings, that's technically nothing more than observing the signs the catcher is throwing down. It's like when we say someone "crushed" the ball when technically he only hit the ball extremely hard. He didn't actually "crush" a baseball. Just like a guy on second doesn't actually "steal" the sign. Now, if you're in a casino playing blackjack and you observe the dealer consistently showing you his hand, would you not use that to your advantage? Of course, you would. And that wouldn't be considered cheating because you're not breaking any rules, you're simply observing the hand the dealer is showing you. But if you were to use a camera or electronic device in order to win? Well, we all know that the casino would not give the cheating poker player a pass. That cheater would get banned from that casino and possibly thrown in jail. And that same penalty should go for any of the astros players who participated in this cheating scandal. Period.
@@darbuki13 yeah, I know. Doesn't mean they shouldn't pay a price though. They just happen to have the strongest union in the world protecting their cheating asses and an absolute coward of a commissioner too afraid to do anything about it
the umpires didn't hear the whistle or can beating? they had to hear it,they hear any player complain about the strike zone so they heard all of it.total b.s all around the story
I like how we're supposed to believe the cheating just stopped at some point in the early part of the 2018 season. Like the Astros suddenly grew a conscience out of nowhere. Please!!!
The best infield of all time is st.louis early 60's infield of 1B Bill White, 2B Julian Javier, ss Dick Groat, 3b Ken Boyer. they were the best in the early 60's they called them the million dollar In field.
What Bench is talking about is totally different (and fine) then putting a camera on the catcher from the outfield and relaying the sign to your dugout then to your batter. What the Astros did should never be forgotten. They actually stole a championship. Idiots.
For the record, ARod, Jeter, Cano, Texeira, & Posada were probably the greatest infield ever aswel, I'll put their numbers up against the big Red's infield anytime, not taking anything away from Johnny Bench & his infield!✌
The only Yankee that was better was Jeter I'll take bench, Tony Perez ,Joe Morgan, and Pete rose at third ,all in Hall of Fame if rose was in .a rod steroids and cano performance enhancing drugs
Sounds like Johnny Bench is kind of defending the owner of the Astros in all of this. It's weird considering how condemning of Pete Rose he is for gambling and the impact/message it would send to kids if Rose was reinstated or allowed in the HOF. Makes me think he actually was/is jealous of Rose.
Carlos Correa spilled the beans yesterday, they know exactly who were cheating like he said, Altuve didn’t want to used the bangs, they have to come and punish those players then, they owes it to the fans and not to the Houston fans remember they are 29 more teams with fans as well, remember the fans are the one who helps to pay their salaries.
We need to destroy the Astros at every away game this coming season, let's give them the worst experience ever at every game so this never happens again, let's roast them from start to finish every game, all game long, all 81 games!✌
I can't believe Johnny Bench said he "felt bad for Jim Crane" and called him a "quality individual." After two minutes of this interview, I could not listen any more.
THAT WAS Bench's opinion! Think maybe he knows more than you? Reds in 75/76 and going into 77 were a top-10 all time team: they even picked up Tom Seaver...results in 77/78: Dodgers SMOKED 'EM..
Just lost a lot of respect for Johnny. "I feel bad for Jim crane." What?! The guy had a budget for cheating and "dark arts." Defending him saying it didn't help. C'mon Johnny
I never liked the Astros before the scandal...they are punks..but let me tell you this now. If this ever happened in the 60s they would spend more time on the dirt, on their butts, then they would on the basepaths...Gibson, Drysdale, Koufax, Marichal, etc....that is NOT a joke. That is when baseball was a mans game, and played correctly, and players were more worried about moving a runner over than their launch angle.. what a shame. That's why I have made what has always been my number two sport my new number one...NHRA drag racing baby!!!!.. maybe when baseball is a mans game again I will watch it. Till then? GOODBYE
@David Montgomery He saw Mickey Mantle play, who by the way won the MVP Award three times, came in second three times, and came within nine votes of winning five times ...
@Mdmchannel when i was a kid i saw Mickey Mantle hit a ball 656 feet to the point where it first landed! 19-year-old Mickey Mantle had just hit the longest home run in baseball history! But Mickey wasn't finished. His second homer, also hit left-handed, was a high, opposite-field drive that easily cleared the left-field wall.
@Mdmchannel Morgan is the best player that he has ever seen play on his team is what he meant.. There were 0lenty of players he saw play better than Morgan.. Example: ROBERTO CLEMENTE..
I can't believe Johnny B can't stand up for Rose!! He is now a sell out!! Crane is his friend ..hmmmm!!! He's been against Rose but what his friend did ( Crane )and his staff and players out and out cheated at its worst case scenario is far beyond the pale of catching signs by watching your opponent and learning tendencies, this is just sick hearing J B and where he stands with his friend
Go to baseball reference & look at the stats, this over the top hype about this just doesn't bear out. 2019 Astros lost every home game, if they had were cheating didn't seem to work. Now the way they did it was against the rules, but sign stealing is part of the game.
