Tony was signing in the El Cajon Ford showroom and sets the rude guy straight! And rightly so! This is vintage Tony Gwynn, who just recently ended radical chemotherapy and back problem issues, respond to this guy just like his old self! #tonygwynn #halloffame #eightbattingtitles #baseballgreats #padres #sandiegopadres #sandiegostate #baseball #basketball #baseballautographs #sportscollecting #greatesthitter

Tony used to come into a Subway on the semi regular I worked at when I was in college that was close to The Murph. He was always very polite and kind. Sometimes people would ask for autographs as he was eating, sometimes when he was there with other people. He would politely explain that he would sign when he was done eating but he was with his wife etc. Once a guy kept bothering him and I asked the guy to leave the store. After he was done Tony thanked me, wrote a quick note to the owner stating that I helped him and his wife out and took a picture with me on one of those disposal cameras the owner kept in the store. I absolutely Love it! "If I don't want to sign it, I ain't gonna!" I met/worked with Tony Gwynn at an event during the 2009 MLB All Star Game. I worked for a company that put on an event for the game. We were lucky enough to bring him in among other HOFers..... I met a lot of athletes and celebrities during my time at that job. He was easily one of my favorites. Incredibly nice, super accomodating to all of his fans and autograph seekers. After the event he approached me and asked if I wanted anything signed (which he did not have to, he fulfilled his obligation). I asked for a picture with him. I was lucky enough to get that picture with him and Bruce Sutter, who was the other MLB HOFer at that particular event. Both guys were awesome to work with!!! I did end up getting a signed ball from both BTW.

Vibe I’m getting is that the dude is an autograph re-seller. It’s one thing to show up with 10 pieces for a guy to sign if he’s got a $100 per item price point, but this appears to be a free meet & greet. Tony has clearly dealt with this guy, who showed up with 1984 certified used pants Tony used, wanting a free signature. Tony politely told him what he thought, and he wouldn’t sign them knowing he’s a re-seller and the guy is stuck with the pants unsigned, and will never be signed.

I've only asked for one autograph in my 67 years. Willie Nelson was in the foursome in front of me at a golf course in Nashville. He signed my scorecard that I lost in a housefire. No way I would stand in line for an autograph.

when it was time to check somebody...he knew how to do it, with one hand tied behind his back, looking you right in your face. I noticed NOT ONE SOUL, sitting at that table or standing in that line, said ONE WORD to the negative to Mr Gwynn, because they knew he was right. He was the furthest thing from a push-over.

I used to live in El Cajon back in the late '70s while attending advanced naval electronics school in San Diego. I hear it's turned into a real hellhole ... or maybe I'm thinking about Vallejo, where I also lived in the mid '70s while attending Naval Nuclear Power School in Mare Island. In any case, I became a Padres fan while living in El Cajon, and followed Tony's career closely. He was easily the best hitter in baseball for many years. RIP Tony
