Hallberg-Rassy say the 40C is 'the best sailing boat they have ever produced'. With twin rudders and a powerful hull she certainly promises to pack a punch. Yachting Monthly editor Theo Stocker headed to Sweden to put her through her paces. Read the full review at: www.yachtingmonthly.com/hr40c

HR still continues to create and build functional, beautifully structured boats to easily fit different financial choices/options. 2024 and their 50-60’s footers still take my breath away. If ever the times arrive when I can afford a yacht, HR is the only way to go.

Really good looking boat and an incentive review/tour. Good for single handed sailing but with that many electric gimmicks some wind/solar and even maybe a water turbine must be needed if you want to sail long passages and maybe with that much modern ship a hybrid engine might work better as well

HR's are great boats, with that hull shape, with almost full beam aft I'd prefer to have seen a slightly smaller galley and an en suite head for the owner's cabin. This is without doubt a fast hull with a lot of modern racing yacht design cues, bullet shaped with almost a full beam aft, hard chines in the aft portion and twin rudders, I wonder how comfortable they would be to weather? Oh I forgot, gentlemen don't sail to weather😂😂😂😂 I saw a video of this boat from Dusseldorf, and as much of a HR fan as I am I actually prefer the new Moody 42 DS, similar hull design, but a totally different design ethos with regards deck and interior layout, if I won the lottery I'd have one of each. Got to go a long way to beat a HR

These reviews are very useful when planning my boat. The hull shape is something to be considered, but I'm really not into unskegged twin rudders. Collisions do happen and I know personally an incident with whale - in the middle of the Atlantic...

I personally was mid-Atlantic when we were struck by (or possibly we struck him) a juvenile sperm whale. Its better to have and not need, then need and not have; especially so when lives may be on the line.

Very late to the party, but I agree whole heartedly. I’m on the west coast of Canada, and would only consider a skeg, double hung rudder. Lovely boat in every other way - except the hull shape and dual daggers - lol. Peace

@robertw.1499 2 года назад
Those teak decks always look amazing when new. Such a shame that they get weathered very quickly and turn grey. Such diverse opinions regarding centre helm stations in comparison to the dual setup. Would be good to get the real expert opinion on this subject. One interior wood finish that HR doesn't offer is a dark wood, high gloss (varnish) finish. Something like mahogany or cherry. I'm really into the classic look with lots of brass fixtures. The 57 or 64 would be be my first choices, or something completely different like the Amel 60 👍

An all round good review including sailing and price instead of berthed and showing bedrooms... what’s happening, people are having faith in their product’s without any secrets: so often the price isn’t mentioned like it’s a matter of “we’ll judge you and how much you can afford then rip you for more.” There’s a few good reviewers out there, some even take sarcastic but constructive criticism well. Good job and a huge plus for mono hulls just the beam might be a bit much when anchored but hey... old’s cool cool, Multihulls hulls are nice but there’s nothing like heeling over in a 20+ knot breeze, now I just need to sell my house.

Very practical and well thought out boat. Regarding the lack of a chartplotter repeater at the nav station, most people would use a laptop for navigation and planning there today, so it's good that they did not include something most people would not use. Did notice a repeater under the dodger, which is also practical.

Yes, designed by Frers, with a keel to drag through water, I mean no stupied box keel. Mast on frontdeck with a short head sail. A long boom for the main. Why not a longer traveler over the full width? Further details are beautifull. Only one problem: "£", sorry for that.

These boats fascinate me. They look like they’re really good boats, and good at what they’re marketed to do. A question, though: does the plumb bow have any advantages, or is it just the modern style. Personally I don’t like the looks.
@mytube001
@mytube001 2 года назад
I would have designed the interior very differently. I would have removed the chart table (pointless feature in the modern world) and made the port side into a mostly linear galley, but with the now-removed chart table made into a work surface, perhaps with a fridge or freezer below. The starboard side would have a combined day heads and en suite for the aft cabin (doors at both ends), as well as a wet locker space, conveniently located next to the companionway. The silly armchairs would be gone, replaced with a settee, which would also serve as an extra berth, with its full length becoming available by opening a panel in the forward bulkhead to stick your feet and legs through (taking away some of the space in the hanging locker opposite the forward heads). The current layout makes this modern 40-foot boat look cramped, more like an 80s 35-footer.

A lot of the new boats have an awful lot of electronics controlling critical parts of sailing. I guess this is ok for weekend sailing but for any serious cruising I would be worried that if an electronic component failed you might be dead in the water. Mechanical things are one thing to fix but electronic repairs are beyond most people. Am I wrong about this? One final thought. Many of these new boats have the so called modern interiors. Yes, they are beautiful boats and I'd love to own one, but I really prefer the classic interiors rather than something that looks like a high end condo.

I’m curious about the new HR designs as offshore open ocean boats. Many people scoff at a fin keel, skegless rudder, and exposed prop. Can anyone comment on the HR’s philosophy in these new boats? P.S. as a novice sailor I’ve read enough to know there’s a lot more to learn!
@YachtingMonthly
@YachtingMonthly 4 года назад
The fin keel in a Hallberg-Rassy is moulded integral to the hull, with only the lead ballast bolted on seperately, where many new boats the entire keel is bolted in to a grid inside the hull. This is the way they have always built their keels. HRs are sill built as bluewater boats. A long keel, skeg hung rudder and enclosed prop is still what some people swear by, but you'll need to put up with a much slower, heavier and probably older boat to get that, with the exception of a couple of marques. The HR 40c was fast but still surprisingly smooth and comfortable to sail, and absolutely built for open ocean
@otm646
@otm646 4 года назад
Look at the last 30 years of performance boats. They all go offshore with fin keels, some very high aspect ratio , and exposed props with zero concern. If you're looking for a serious expedition boat you're looking for a totally different set of criteria which encompases what you outlined.

My concern would be the effect of the very wide aft sections. Yes of course it gives greatly increased volume in the aft cabin, very nice to have, yes it will give better downwind performance, but it will be a handful sailing upwind. Notice how the boat rounded up in a slight gust on the film. You could argue that the twin rudders will help or that they probably should have reduced sail etc, but the fact is that all of that volume aft, coupled with that plum fine entry bow, will be hard work and wet when sailing upwind.
