Today is June 6th so I've start this video with a short memorial to my father who was a Canadian soldier who landed on D-Day eighty years ago. As for the radio, I make good progress tracing the test signal through the radio . . . until I don't.

Upon viewing the video it is clear that he has improperly installed the speaker dummy load. Under no circumstances should the cold (ground) side of the resistor go to the standby connection. It would work if he also grounded the standby connection. But, as it is, the standby circuit goes goes to the resistor. This creates a feed-back path that reacts strongly to the audio output of the receiver, Note that the standby lead is part of the RF gain circuit. So when you turn up the volume the RX audio goes to the RF gain circuit and all sorts of bad things happen. Not the least of which is that there will be low audio output. The exception to this is if the standby lead is grounded elsewhere. But, I do not think so. While I have been wrong before, I think not this time. While I wish Jim well, I fear that a perfectly good receiver will be ruined. Already he scrapes the top of the receiver around on the lazy Susan. This cannot help the paint job and the value of the receiver continues to diminish. The manual shows the top connection of the terminal strip is the speaker connection while the center connection is the standby connection and the bottom connection is ground. Figure 5 shows the proper connection. Shame shame shame for not looking at the manual. It is his radio and he can do as he sees fit. To the viewers: This is no way to treat this receiver. And only negative things can be learned from following the same path. So, I suggest that, if faced with the same circumstance, please refer to the manual. If you have some experience and skills the manual (readily available on line) is a fine resource. The manual for this radio has lots of diagrams and figures that would be of a great help. I really don't know why I bother with this except to say I think you, the viewer, can do better with a bit of effort. My best wishes are with you. Jim says he does not read the comments. other than "Greg's" there are precious few and some are very constructive. Again, it is his choice. In everything in life there is a better and a worse so it is all relative. In this cast the "better" channel presenters encourage comments and benefit from them - and they say so. They present a humble appearance and are gracious with their responses. Again it is his choice. OH! Sigh! If someone can contact him please tell him to put a shorting jumper between the Standby and Ground connections on the back of the receiver. He does not need to admit that someone gave him a clue and that he followed it.

Thumbs up on remembering your dad who plainly wanted to forget the terrible war he fought in as a very young man and a friend who had the forethought to put him in his book that you now have to cherish.

I bought that book after seeing it the first time you showed it on your channel. It was a moving read, thank you for telling your watchers about it. Now to watch the video!

Looks like Silver Mica disease that happens in old Hammarlund receivers. The IF can be repaired. Many info and RU-vid videos on how to do it.
