For thirty years, I've watched this movie. And I always thought Michael stabbed the Marshall in the back. Because on TV, the sound of the gunshot is always censored.
This scene explains why Loomis ran out of bullets in his revolver the climax in the operating room. There were five shots on Michael Myers when he entered through the glass door, and this scene shows the sixth shot which accidentally hit the Marshall.
Well, that depends on the version. In the theatrical release, he fired one shot through the window of the marshal's car out of his personal Smith and Wesson Revolver. That would leave him with 5 rounds. He goes on to fire five shots into Michael's body in the theatrical cut, which would leave him on empty and would explain why he couldn't take the head shot on Michael in the operating room. The TV version has him firing one shot in the car and then firing two into Michael. That should leave him 3 shots left, and then one fired into the marshal would leave him with 2 rounds. The Colt Python that he took off of the marshal is the gun he lays at Laurie's feet. This fan edit makes sense in the way of the blood splattering and running down the front of the marshal's uniform. It does fit that a scene was cut where Loomis accidentally shot the marshal, and that the squib exploding was left in the cut, despite it seeming like he was stabbed in the back. But it doesn't explain Loomis' gun being empty.
