I feel that, in simple words, this film, is everything that lurks in the shadows. It plays alot with paranoia and how we sometimes sense something or someone watching us or sounds we hear. Great film.

Donald Pleasance brought the extra bit of class, same way Alec Guinness did in Star wars.

Thomas Drowry I think Donald Pleasance, especially in the scene where he describes the young Michael as having "the blackest eyes...the devil's eyes", is the anchor for this movie. Without Dr. Loomis' singleminded, obsessive pursuit of Michael, "The Shape" would have been just another mindless killing machine, like all the one dimensional slashers that followed. Donald Pleasance is to Halloween what Van Helsing was to Dracula.

What has always struck me as a great aspect of 'Halloween' is that it feels like a real neighborhood. Despite this movie being made before I was born, I remember Halloween nights from the 80s...and they felt very similar to what goes on in this movie. The movie is scary because it's so easy to buy into the fact that what you're watching is actually happening.
@jongon0848

I think this film is so effective because of how little u know about Michael Myers, u don't know why he killed his sister, why he's killing teenagers and why he wears a mask. It's one of the few times where less is more. Another aspect I found fascinating was the mask that Michael wore, if u think about it, it's a visual representation of Michael Myers as a character, not a monster but this blank empty emotionless creature that can't be reasoned with or silenced

The acting I thought was just typical acting in horror movies in that time period lol. I thought Jamie Lee Curtis was fine. I actually really liked her whimpering when she discovers her friends dead and her screaming when she's outside is some of the most convincing scream for help I have heard.

I know a lot of people will disagree with this, but I've always found Michael Myers to be the scariest character in any horror movie. Easily more frightening than Freddy or Jason, in my opinion.
@xxoxia

Freddy sucks, but Jason, watch Friday part 2. It's the scariest one of the entire bunch, when he has that bag over his head, and something about that early 80's film is just creepy. Also, the first Child's Play. Chucky is creepy as fuck in that movie, because the first half, you never see him move.

It's the movie direction. The shots are amazing. The contrast between the darkness and Mike's mask works SO WELL. Carpenter knew this and used it to maximize the terror. Even the shot when Laurie looks out the window and sees a figure carrying someone across the street...we know what that is but she doesn't and it's great. This is a lesson in SUBTLETY. The frights don't come with the kills, they come with the knowing that a kill is coming...but when? How? This is still one of the best by far.

From a technical perspective, this film is a masterpiece. The direction, cinematography, editing, music, sound, and tension/suspense are perfect. It's everything a horror film should be. But the acting (with the exception of Donald Pleasence) is so fucking horrendous it bogs the movie down quite a bit for me.
@thewayfarer1762
@thewayfarer1762 2 года назад
The pacing for this movie was terrible, there were too many shots on somebody walking in the distance 30 sec each time which was a tactic to increase the run time as with all the main sequences, the movie would've been 35 minutes long and there was too little screen time of Michael Myers.
@devilzdandruff9199

@@_mono_01 It’s pretty bad. The cop, Annie, Linda the kids and some of the lesser characters like the teacher too. The hide and seek nonsense isn’t remotely scary anymore. The guy hides behind bedsheets, bushes, cars and couches. Then he just pops up with terrible sound effects again and again. Then to top it off the guy doesn’t even look or act scary. A slow moving guy that manages to turn superhuman just because.

"Halloween" and its tropes have been analyzed to death, but I've always found the real brilliance of the film to be its simplicity. Despite some budget issues, Haddonfield and its featured residents feel real to me, the same way the beach in "Jaws" does. The dialogue may not be Shakespeare, but it certainly sounds enough like the day-to-day talk of some fairly normal teen girls who mostly just go about their normal business, unaware they're being stalked. Make what you will of the victims' sex lives; for me, "Halloween" perfectly captures the sense of "stranger danger" paranoia that was just beginning to emerge in 1977.

A classic horror film in every sense. I watched it originally as a teenager, (I’m 41 now!) and seriously I couldn’t sleep for about 2 weeks afterwards. You watch it for the first time, possibly at night, on your own, and after you’ve finished watching it, you make sure all the doors and windows are locked and you turn the light on in every room in your house to make sure no one’s there. That’s a sign of a really good horror film.

I agree that the film's notion of "evil" as a philosophically intangible force is what makes this film stand out from the rest, and it was what was lacking in the Rob Zombie remake. What makes Michael so frightening is that he is not a ghost or a zombie, but an avatar for an unstoppable force of evil. There's no magic dagger or ancient MacGuffin that will help you defeat him, your only hope is to try to survive the night if you encounter him. Unfortunately, Rob Zombie pretty much removes the forboding fear that philosophical sense of evil brings with it and essentially turns Michael into a rather generic psychopath with family issues. A bit more realistic? Sure. But for its realism, it trades in that dreadful sense that something larger and far more powerful than us is at play.

I don't really mind Zombie's take on Halloween as the franchise had already gone to hell in earlier instalments. Halloween 6 and Resurrection are worst in the series as far as I'm concerned.

There's just something about Halloween that sets it apart from other horror movies. The soundtrack and sound effects, atmosphere and lighting. Time of year also which seems like late autumn early winter make this movie amazing. But most of all it's the mysterious silence of the cold blooded killer behind the expressionless and eerie mask

I think it's so good because it's an art film at it's core. It's horror second. The shot and lighting of "the shape" carrying the body around the house, the face from the shadows, the stalking the school, the falling leaves, the breathing and the direction of the music. It's art first, horror second and that is why this is film is the greatest horror film ever made.

Evil is such a fascinating thing to examine in movies, literature, video games, etc. It says more about the people behind its construction than just about anything else because it is so individualized. Things get really interesting when you throw away the old notion that good and evil are diametrically opposed, and instead delve into the grey areas.

😕For a loong time, I never realized that Michael was standing by the car when Laurie was looking out the window when she was in school. I always assumed he was just sitting inside watching her. When I finally DID see him there, it raised the creep level another notch for me. And I think it was the aspect ratio. Watching this in full screen, or any movie for that matter, robs the true vision of what the director intended to show... Always watch widescreen.

I just saw it for the first time this Halloween (never cared to watch it before because it's so over-referenced) and I loved it SO MUCH. I was completely taken by surprise at how well it was executed and how beautifully it was shot! Unlike a lot of Horror films, this movie really managed to make me care about the characters and the ending was so subtle, yet so terrifying. I actually even liked the over the top acting haha

For Halloween this year, just rewatched Tales From The Crypt: Demon Knight. No classic but so much fun with William Sadler in a rare hero role and Billy Zane as one of the funniest horror bad guys ever. Just a hilarious performance. Liked the movie a lot when I saw in theaters in 21 years ago, and still do.

I think one reason it was so remembered was for what it started. This movie was the first real, visceral main stream horror film. Remember, Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre hadn’t received a hugely wide release, and had been banned in multiple places, and The Exorcist was very much a supernatural film. This film was a real terror flick, and unlike some of its successors in the slasher genre, this movie focused more on building suspense than kills. More Alfred Hitchcock than Tobe Hooper (just saying, I love Tobe Hooper’s work on The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Poltergeist, no disrespect here). Even Roger Ebert, who went on to become a very vocal critic of slasher films went to bat for this and gave it four stars in his review. Oh, and also the frequent cultural references to it in films like Scream and the star power of actors like Jamie Lee Curtis and director John Carpenter, as well as the multiple sequels probably also kept the film in the public consciousness.

"LYNNZEEEE!" Ugh that whole reform acne grates on me as an actor. Agree all around on this vid tho! A classic, iconic, perfect for when it came out and influencing the 80's Halloween scare, fear of razor blades in apples and "Halloween is evil" all over the news, as opposed to 50's60's cutsie Halloween parties-kids bobbing for apples. Totally cozy up and watch this every Halloween cuz ITS THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR🎃

The way they picked Tony Moran to be the face of Michael in the unmasking scene was perfect. Nick Castle LOOKED like a killer...Tony did not. Tony Moran looked like just a scared kid who was not much older than those he was killing and stalking all night. I love to view Halloween as a stand alone masterpiece.

I have never been so underwhelmed by a movie. I think this movie does not live up to the hype. Walking in, I had such expectations from hearing others talk about it. I was barely scared in any of the scenes because a lot of it seemed unnatural and the moans when people scream were laughable. Apart from the opening scene, and the Michael Myers score. I think this movie was pretty bad. For the first time ever, I disagree with you Chris. All that said. This movie has become a classic and what John Carpenter was able to achieve with what he had is impressive.

the only thing I don't like about the remakes is how they made michael myers like 7 feet tall. In the original he's like an average sized guy going around killing people, not some towering monster like jason.
