The Halo TV series cost 10 million dollars per episode, and all Bungie's PR team needed was one lovingly crafted model and about 8 minutes of old men talking about war to blow it cleanly out of the water.
Bungie had good writers and creative directors, who understood the aesthetic and themes of the halo universe. You play as the single greatest killing machine, in a war that your side is desperately losing. The stakes are extinction through genocide. It’s a mix of awesome badass moments, and a tidal wave crashing on you. The new creative teams just don’t get it.
@@elyastoohey6621 Do some digging and you'll find these showrunners didn't even want to get it. They proudly pointed out that they refused to even play or watch any of the games themselves.
@@elyastoohey6621 My guess, some PR goon with too much clout didn't like the exact things about Halo that made it work in the first place. So we had some people in charge who didn't like what they were adapting. Then hubris kicked in and they thought they could do it better. Similar to Ninja Theory's Devil May Cry reboot, and we all know how successful that was.
@@cybertruckeralpha Sadly, that’s becoming more frequent nowadays. Most recently with shows like Kenobi and Book of Boba Fett. Why buy a franchise or brand to ruin it? If you don’t like the original idea then save money and pass on it.
It is critically the best. But I think the most successful at drawing in interest was the original red dead redemption’s campaign. Rockstar nailed that campaign. Erstwhile whilst the halo 3 campaign was amazing, most of us were already gonna buy it. The marketing campaign just added an extra layer of appreciation.
@@huwpurcell8683 maybe we shouldnt give bungie every grace. Everyone who was there is no longer. Its time to pay attention to developers, not the companies they sign to. It'd be like calling Beatles albums Apple Record releases.
this is barely the first cinematic commercial, and it is by far not the most cinematic commercial, even in video games at the time it was released, it doesn't even use any of the language of cinema to portray much Epic, grandiose, and austere, sure, but a diorama is almost by its very nature not cinematic
Scream77541 the hype has not disappeared, but the population has. It’s so much harder to enjoy halo 3 without the population and the community around it. I can’t get into H3 customs because my friends don’t have custom maps and game types, I can’t get into 16 player lobbies because no one plays it.. it’s a damn shame.
I agree. The reason I said the hype disappeared is because you never hear about it anymore. Like you said, it is very rare to find a big custom games lobby.
This was back in the golden age for xbox 360 owners. I'd say the best games were from 2006-2011. Halo, Gears of war, and Call of duty were all in their primes
You couldn't have said that better. Call of duty wasn't what it is now, gears of war was still alive, and halo, well halo was just the best. Key word was... Sad to say.
Jonathan Bradford Thanks and yup very sad. I still go back on and play games from that period but it sucks because we are in an intermission between amazing series, just got to wait for the next one.....
Exactly. I remember when my friend got his first xbox, and we played Halo 3 right when it came out. I must have played the campaign twice in 2 days. Then I got my 360 much later and that was around when Just Cause 2, Red Dead, and Reach came out. Good times...
“The message just repeats... Believe, Believe, Believe.” “Catchy. Any idea what it means?” “Dear Humanity. We Believe that Halo 3 will be one badass game. We Believe in the kickass potential of its multiplayer. And we most definitely Believe its campaign will leave a hell of an imprint on our lives!“ “OOH-RAH”
But when all hope is lost, when you can feel the icy prickles down your spine that death is inevitable, you look at the one man who was leading the charge, who was your greatest weapon against an unstoppable enemy, you see that he is down, on the verge of defeat, but then your eyes light up, the weapon suddenly feels powerful in your hands, as you see that man, look right back at you, telling you to keep fighting, to keep winning, to keep believing....
Bungie made Halo seem real. I feel like that's the magic here. That we all knew that this game was just a game, yet to be so invested in something that is bigger than yourself is what drives people in.
I really love how 343 took Halo and made the art style more realistic in Infinite. It's almost like chief, Cortana, the UNSC, the covenant, etc might be real and we don't know yet. Definitely one of the biggest things that make Halo so memorable
Bungie's style of Halo always seemed to skirt the line between intense realism and epically artful fantasy. Take the SPNKR rocket launcher, it looks very menacing and aggressive, and would serve to be a very effective and real weapon, but underneath the surface it's kind of impractical given how you have to reload the tubes themselves, rather than just replacing a magazine. But that's kicker, isn't it? It's more about tricking us into thinking it's very real through seeing the world through an artistic lens than trying to abide by boring real world logic. Would still rather prefer that over boring as hell rocket launcher 343 tried to make a thing, lmfao.
@I Used to be - THANK YOU! Been searching through comments from a parody video that used this music for ages, only to discover it was used for this Halo promo. Fiiiinally have an answer 👍 Should've known it'd be Chopin - that'll be why I like it so much! Thanks, dude.
Bungie knew exactly what they were doing at 0:31. A frame of a marine crawling towards his rifle, followed by a brute about to smash him with his gravity hammer, followed by another marine cowering with a frozen stare filled with the most soulshattering terror. It plays like a movie in my head. A very gruesome one
"mediocre writing" would be preferable to generic drama and absurd plot additions. most of the lead writers for halo 4, and the entirety of 5 are fucking comic book writers. that alone should rest my case, because unless an individual is just this new to the franchise, or they're a mentally crippled child, the inconsistencies associated with the aforementioned should be glaringly apparent.
This game did something to me physiological it was the first time I experienced an addiction a compelling campaign an unprecedented online multiplayer experience....Bungie you magnificent bastards
Ghoulish gyro what? Halo 2’s campaign was incredible. I like Halo 3 but the arbiter and chief basically don’t even acknowledge each other’s existence save for one or two moments in the entire campaign. Halo 2 was very fleshed out and had amazing character progression for arbiter. Amazing story in general.
It was never about the graphics, the realism, or the badass moments. It was always about the emotional story. OG Halo is a marvel of creativity that makes you feel hopeful and proud to be a human being.
A sad day for our boys in green. 1/13/2022, I wasn't there for the end. But I was there since the very beginning. To all you folks who stood your ground before the servers shut down. Thank you, thank you for fighting the good fight. We knew the fight had to finish one day, but I wish we never had to witness it. Rest in peace, Halo servers on the 360. May we continue our legacy in the MCC and may that never burnout.
@@randipoling635 i found a cool group of people a few weeks after shutdown, they had a discord server but at the time i didnt have it, but i got to play halo 3 after shutdown and its so much better than mcc.
The greatest* No video game has ever had a better series of advertisements than Halo 3, even Halo Reach or ODST's ads weren't as good as this. It really was lightning in a bottle, when pop culture, internet culture, and gaming culture all sort of came together at once throwing this game deeper into the zeitgeist than a series of advertisements alone could ever do. The timing was perfect for it.
I second that notion from the fellow above me. Nothing has topped this, and it will be well earned if anything ever truly manages to top this. But I'm pretty confident that won't be in my life time.
I've recently read the books and now know how dangerous the brutes really are, and how devastating the covenant weapons can be. A group of 3 brutes took on chief and 3 other Spartans. Grace was killed in the initial ambush, John was grappling with a brute and nearly died while Fred and Will were pinned down, unable to do anything. Seeing just how many brutes and other Covenant soldiers there are, seeing the men falling and running, the sheer hopelessness and fear on those faces, it barely looks like a battle. It looks like a massacre.
the great schism and really the arbiter are the only reasons humanity survives. my only complaint of Halo 3 is I wish they displayed that hopelessness a bit more and made you feel the weight of just how much the shangheli helped
That's big considering, I can't remember if it was Will or Fred. But one of those Spartan's specialties were hand to hand combat and even threw fists and beat a Hunter in unarmed combat in the book Ghosts of Onyx
I remember being...probably 6th grade. In a family restaurant that had TV's mounted on the wall. This was on at some point and I always only remembered seeing the helmet looking up with "Believe". It's wild to see it every time years later. Halo 3 changed gaming for me forever.
Toenism Everyone has their own opinion I respect yours but as a Halo fan since day one and I mean Friday 15th November 2001. I will always be a loyal gamer towards Halo. Yes we are going through some tough times but that can only mean improvements are coming soon.
I still believe that Halo can make a comeback. Never forget the franchise that Bungie made. Never forget the entertainment it brought us. Never forget Halo. Rest in peace. 2001-2010
Kurt -051 Can't you see? It's over. Are you blind to all that's happening? The micro transactions, the head of Halo leaving, etc? Halo is a dying franchise. At this point nothing can change that. Halo will never be the same, it will never be as good as it once was. All we can do is try to make our voices be heard "Take out the req system" "Bring back the old art style" "Make Master Chief the protagonist again" If we do that, we might just have a chance. But I have a feeling that Microsoft doesn't care about us or Halo anymore. In their eyes, Halo is just their cash cow. It's a shame, really. I like to think that Halo stricken down when Bungie left and Halo 4 was its last stand. Now the flood took over its body. That's what Halo 5 is.
PhantomMori Can't you see that excessive toxicity from the community doesn't help either? You are a part of this toxicity. You're saying that Halo is dying? You know that you can recover from a very large cancer, even though you are at your final stand? You are one cell of that cancer that the community is facing right now and you are badly metastasing. You're keep saying that your opinion is a fact, although everything is relative and everything is possible. ^^ First, you can't really be sure of anything (exception of relatively). Secondly, every opinion, point, argument, statement, perspective, etc. is valid and connected to everything. This is the effect of relativity. Here are some corrections: Josh Holmes isn't the head of 343i, he is one of its leaders, like Bonnie Ross, and he isn't leaving yet but soon. "Make Master Chief the protagonist again" and "Take out the REQ system" are purely closed minds, these things only need adjustments (no microtransactions, no armor customisation included to the REQ system, better UI, revise Locke's/Chief's roles, make MC appear as much as Locke) and those are long term adjustments so stop being so "frustrated". Also, Chief is already on of H5 protagonist.
Kurt -051 What difference will one kid do to the moral of the Halo fan base? Chief was only in 3 missions in all of Halo 5's campaign. 343 is just digging the hole deeper and deeper. It's gonna take a miracle for Halo to make a come back. Microsoft won't let go of micro transactions. And because of that, we're pretty much doomed. It's not like all because I said that Halo is finished, you're gonna give up as well, are you? So calm down man.
The most powerful trailer I know of, for any game. You don't need the characters to move. The expressions on their faces say everything that needs to be said. You don't get trailers like this anymore. Now, it's just flashy hype for next-gen mediocrity at full-retail price. Gaming as a whole has gone to shit.
I couldn't agree more. They just try too hard & not just with the trailers. They use to be a lot more creative as well with their games. Most of the companies have moved too far away from what made games great like back in the good old days (90's for me when i was born).
When I was a kid, Halo 3 was the first ever M Rated game I played; it was also my introduction to first person shooters. Before that, I pretty much just played Star Wars Battlefront 1 & 2 and the Revenge of the Sith game (also for a little while I had the spiderman 2 game). Halo 3 was so groundbreaking to me, it was the first time a game's story and gameplay had really grabbed me and pulled me in. I still have so many fond memories of it. I will never forget playing "The Covenant" with my older brother and dropping him off onto a scarab from the hornet I was piloting and then picking him back up right before it explodes. I also remember playing infection mode with just him and his friend (on splitscreen because we didn't have xbox live at the time) and I would struggle so hard to get them because they would just drive around the map on a mongoose. It may sound ridiculous, but the experiences I had playing Halo 3 honestly changed my life. God I love this game.
I bet you were one of those fucking kids that sucked ass, kept on rage quitting and with your squeaky voices, you guys made the experience terrible for all of us come back when your b alls drop
@@imjustlookingformywatch well kids like you are in every game no matter the console or game, again wait for your b alls to drop and then play mature games thx
Not a word was said, not any big explosions or loud gunfire, just a single, frozen moment in the heat of battle, then Chief looks up to tell the viewer something special with a simple glance, what he says exactly is different for each person, as I can't properly explain what that glance meant to me, but it was something along the lines of, "*We* will win."
Back when they poured their heart and souls into games and made them with love for the fans and for themselves. No loot boxes or microtransactions just a great game for you to enjoy. It makes me sad that we dont get that anymore, everything comes with strings attached. Halo infinite already has a bullshit season pass and when i saw it i honestly felt so sad. That why im back here rewatching Halo 3 ads.
The saddest part is, we'll probably never get an era of gaming like this again. And what I mean is seeing THIS level of passion, love and care for games, as an art form if you will.
@@WhoopsieDayZ There's no doubt about it but i only wish there was more story to it. This game was great everything about it was great but it could have been better.
@@jessemartin214 True, but it was the game that introduced us to the characters, the world, the enemies, the gameplay etc. So in a way it's also good that they kept the story a bit more simple. It's great as a standalone game to get you invested in the world and the characters. Only after that do we get to know more about the different factions, politics, locations and stuff.
Just to share a memory; I remember watching this trailer over & over while on my grandmas couch… when I close my eyes and listen to the music I can still see both her & my father, now both deceased watching it with me; I see the couch, the giant Tv from the 90s she refused to replace, everything. The memories of playing Halo 3 with my cousins in that same space come flooding back as well… it’s like it was just yesterday we were snot nosed kids playing on the 360… I remember playing, and owning my dad in Halo 3 Forge, later in Reach, but we would still laugh & smile through it all…now we’re adults and so many of the adults who watched us play are dead and gone…but all I can say is thank you for the memories Bungie… I doubt anyone who worked on these games will ever realize how much impact they had on us, but y’all deserve to.
The Halo trilogy tells an amazing tale few others have matched in terms of greatness. Humanity colonizing the stars in the 26th century and encountering an alien conglomerate empire known as The Covenant. Even though the entire war was a lie for the great prophets to hang on to their power through lies that humanity was an affront to their gods and masters the Forerunners even though humanity were the heirs of their technology the Reclaimers. Humanity fought for nearly 3 decades against a foe that outnumbered them and outgunned them. But humanity endured their light never going out despite the billions of deaths and dozens of planets scorched by the fires of the prophets judgement. Humanity's ultimate victory was not achieved in one skirmish or in one day it was bled for by billions of humans. Civilians, Marines, and the ODST's and ultimately the Spartan-II's of which John-117 the Master Chief was the most famous and his light shone the brightest giving hope to a species who was losing their hope and their faith that the Covenant War could be won. But in 2552-2553 the war at long last came to an end Master Chief, The Arbiter and his Sangheili soldiers defecting causing a Schism and the new strength given to humanity gave them the will to achieve victory but at a large cost. The Human-Covenant war was the most destructive and bloody ever fought in Human history except perhaps maybe the war with the Flood and Forerunners. The lore, backstory, gameplay, and characters have made Halo my favorite game franchise of all time and I hope like humanity it will endure and shine brightly even under new leadership of 343i.
Well, at first to me it was just this game about take the Assault Rifle, grab headshot capable weapon, deal with grunt minions guarding brute leader, throw a few stickys back melee brute and move on... ...but when you put it like that...
These games will never die. You can play them with new friends and love ones. Show these games to a younger audience. A friend next door, a niece, nephew. Anyone! Let them enjoy something from our past. Explain the story of S-117 and how he helped shape who we are today as men and women. When I was a child growing up all I wanted to be is Master Chief. I love being a leader and assist others. Tell the story. Keep Halo alive my friends.
What a time to be alive. I remember the 2000’s you couldn’t go anywhere without hearing about halo. I’m so glad to have been alive to play these amazing games.
I gotta say one thing 343 has done right is the Halo 2 anniversary, it was fun to play it again but with updated action packed cutscenes. It's as close as u can get to watching a halo movie.
For all the disappointing nostalgia trips I've had, ones like this hit me hard for how much it really holds up as much as it did for me as it as a kid.
Happy 15th Birthday Halo 3 and thank you for everything Bungie. H3 will continue to live on for us. Legends never die. I was there. 9/25/07 BELIEVE FINISH THE FIGHT 117 "WERE IT SO EASY" "WAKE ME, WHEN YOU NEED ME" September 25th, 2007. 15 Years of Excellence! Classic Halo for LIFE.
Why, for the love of god, why, is there only 195,898 views (as of 6/3/14) on this masterpiece of an advertisement? If I hadn't heard of Halo in my entire life for whatever disgrace of a reason, this minute of my life would make me want to play them all.
I swear Fall Guys and it's dev team treated Halo better than what 343 did by making a parody of the Believe ad and it came out still great as the ad did.
I watch this maybe one or twice a year, and I have ever since it first debuted. It hits me the same every single time. God.. I miss Halo 3. I miss it so much.
Just thought of something. Super Smash Bros. is a game based on a kid playing with his toys, it would be pretty cool if Master Chief got in they used this trailer as a reference. Just replace the characters here with the 80+ characters in Smash.
I've watched a lot of video game ads over the years, and theres been quite a few that have evoked emotional responses. But nothing will ever come close to how this ad makes me feel every time I watch it. It makes me genuinely start crying because the emotion from the trailer is palpable. The expressions on the marine's faces from horror, pain, terror, and more are haunting. The framing on each shot sometimes telling a story, like the marine reaching for the assault rifle while the Brute towers over him. And all this topped by an incredibly somber and melancholic piano crescendoing as you see Chief being held by the Brute. This has to be the greatest video game ad ever. I don't know if any other gaming ad even comes close.
Remember.. When u were down 2 - 0 on Ctf and u kept fighting because u believed u knew there was a chance.. Victory was around the corner if only u could pass that corner but u had to believe never give up never stop believing and those victory will have there day I SAY BELIEVE
MLG match, we're down 46 to 49, the respawn of the enemy team changed, all my teammates are looking in the wrong respawn, the four of us are clumped in top middle of Narrows map, I look back and I see the whole enemy team coming for us, I threw a grenade and I managed to kill two and my other teammates did the final kills we won. That was the sweetest win in my entire Halo 3's career. I loved so much that game.
if reminds me of cod on search and destroy being the last man standing and believing you could win and end up taking you and the last guy out with a grenade
